The derrick is the part f a digger derrick that is used t accmplish the lifting functin. The derrick cnsists f a pedestal/turntable assembly (the pedestal) and an extendable bm Pedestal. The pedestal is munted n the truck bdy. The pedestal supprts the bm and huses the mtr that rtates the bm. Digger derricks are ften classified accrding t where n the truck bdy the pedestal is munted Rear munt. A digger derrick with the pedestal munted at the back f the truck and the bm stred ver the truck cab Center munt. A digger derrick with the pedestal munted directly behind the truck cab and the bm stred ver the back f the truck Crner munt. A digger derrick with the pedestal munted at the rear f the truck, similar t a rear munt but ff-center ver ne crner f the truck Extendable Bm. The extendable bm is attached t the pedestal. The bm is typically made in several sectins, which allw it t be extended r retracted. It can be raised, lwered and swung arund in a circle. This allws the tip f the bm t be psitined anywhere within a wide area arund the truck Ple grabbers. Munted at the tip f the bm. Ple grabbers are hydraulically perated jaws, which can be used t guide a ple and stabilize it in psitin as it is being set. They can be pened and clsed and, n sme vehicles, tilted up and dwn Winch. A pwered reel device used with a winch line fr lifting. The winch can be munted n the pedestal, r it can be munted at the tip f the bm. If the winch is pedestal-munted, a bm tip sheave is used at the tip f the bm t guide the winch line.

9 The Digger. The digger is the part f a digger derrick that des the actual digging. The digger mechanism is a hydraulically perated mtr that drives the auger. It is attached t the bm by the digger hanger bracket Auger. The auger resembles a large drill bit. It is the hle-bring tl f the digger. It is cnnected t the shaft f the digger mechanism with a large pin. They are made in varius sizes fr different types f jbs (utility ple installatin, anchr installatin, etc.). Augers are changed by remving the pin and slipping the auger ff the shaft f the digger mechanism Auger Stwage Basket. When the auger is nt in use, it is stwed n the auger stwage bracket Auger Hist Line. The hist line is attached t a hk n the upper end f the auger. When the auger is rtated slwly, it winds up int its stwed psitin. The digger is held in place n the stwage bracket by a hydraulically perated stw lck pin. Sme digger derricks als have a mechanical pin, which is manually inserted t further safeguard the assembly Digger Derrick Cntrls Multi-purpse bm cntrl. The multi-purpse bm cntrl can be mved in several different directins t mve the bm up r dwn, extend r retract the bm, r rtate the pedestal t the left r right. The farther any cntrl is mved frm the central, r neutral, psitin, the faster the functin it cntrls is perfrmed Thrttle pedal. Lcated n the pedestal, the thrttle pedal cntrls the speed f the truck s engine which pwers the hydraulic system. When the speed f the engine is increased, the pwer t the hydraulic system is increased Stw lck release. Hydraulically lcks and releases the stw lck pin, allwing the auger t be held in place n the auger stwage bracket r lwered fr use Dump valve. Lcated within reach f the peratr. If ne f the cntrls sticks, the peratr can use the dump valve t temprarily stp hydraulic actin. When the prblem causing the stuck cntrl is crrected, the peratr returns the dump valve t its riginal psitin t restre hydraulic pwer Outrigger cntrls. Outrigger cntrls are lcated at the back f the truck. They cntrl the peratin f the utriggers, which are a pair f hydraulically perated arms that can be extended ut frm the sides f the truck t the grund t help stabilize the unit.
