7 The purpse f the sweeper is t remve freign bject damage (FOD) and debris frm paved surfaces Rle in the missin (Unit/Base/Cmmunity (during natural disasters)/air Frce) Be cmpletely familiar with the safety features f the sweeper Safely and prficiently perate the sweeper Sweeper design. The design f a sweeper cnsists f a regenerative air system that enables the sweeper t clean pavement surfaces. The air system is a clsed lp system in which the nly air used is the air cnfined within the sweeper. The trainee must accmplish all three cmpnents f the air brake check crrectly. Air brake safety devices vary. Hwever, this prcedure is designed t see that any safety device perates crrectly as air pressure drps frm nrmal t a lw air cnditin. Fr safety purpses, in areas where an incline is present, the peratr will use wheel chcks during the air brake check. The prper prcedures fr inspecting the air brake system are as fllws: With the air pressure built up t gvernr cutff ( punds per square inch (psi)), shut ff the engine, chck the wheels if necessary, release the parking brake (all vehicles) and fully apply the ft brake. Hld the ft brake fr ne minute. Check the air gauge t see if the air pressure drps mre than three punds in ne minute (single vehicle).
13 Withut re-starting the engine, turn electrical pwer t the n r battery charge psitin. Begin fanning ff the air pressure by rapidly applying and releasing the ft brake. Lw air warning devices (buzzer, light, flag) shuld activate befre air pressure drps belw 60 psi r level specified by the manufacturer Cntinue t fan f the air pressure. 15 AF Frm 1800, SF 91 and DD Frm Driving Safety and Precautins Overview safety and precautins. The fllwing are safety items and prcedures t be fllwed during sweeper peratins. The manufacturer s peratr s manual will als prvide safe perating prcedures and the vehicle itself may have warnings, cautins and danger stickers that the vehicle peratr shuld be aware f Vehicle data plate. Be familiar with the lcatin and infrmatin fund n the data plate Plan the rute Overhead clearance. Check the clearance height f the vehicle relative t the verhead bstructins such as pwer lines, trees, and bridges Width restrictins/cnstructin znes, ver-the-rad Weight restrictin (rads, bridges, ff-rad cnditins) Inclines Uneven grund Sft surfaces Street-side peratins Greater vehicle weight. The peratr needs t cnsider the cmbined weight f the snw brm and the lad. This will affect the fllwing: Operatr s ability t stp. D nt tailgate the vehicle in frnt. Allw mre distance between vehicles in rder t increase reactin time Vehicle s ability t accelerate/fllw the flw f traffic. Accelerate smthly and gradually s the truck des nt jerk. Rugh acceleratin causes unnecessary, premature mechanical damage t the truck s drive train. Maintain a safe speed (typically 5 miles per hur (mph) belw the psted speed limit) Dwngrades/upgrades. The peratr will use lwer gears mre frequently t climb hills r muntains with increasing grade steepness, length and/r heavy lad weight. Plan ahead t identify dwngrades/upgrades n the rute f travel. If pssible, talk t ther drivers wh are familiar with the grades t find ut what speeds are safe. When encuntering dwngrades/upgrades as described, the peratr will need t address:
16 Speed. On dwngrades, gravity causes the speed f the vehicle t increase. The peratr must select an apprpriate safe speed, use a lw gear, and prper braking techniques. The peratr must g slw enugh s as t nt verheat the truck brakes Stpping. If the brakes becme t ht, they may start t fade. This means the peratr will need t apply the brakes harder and harder t acquire equivalent stpping pwer Sharp turns. Slw dwn befre entering the turn. During the turn, avid sharp sudden mvements with the steering wheel. This reduces the chance f shifting the lad in the tank, and als prevents the pssibility f tipping ver due t the higher center f gravity Surrundings. Operating a snw brm requires the peratr s cnstant attentin. Many situatins can be avided by simply paying clse attentin t the surrunding cnditins. Rad signs such as steep grade, lw verhead clearance, sharp turn ahead, and special speed limits are psted fr the driver s safety Size. The peratr must take int accunt, the size/width f the brm head assembly and airblast ducts when perating the vehicle Air fireld sweeper peratins IAW AFI , Airfield Driving, AFMAN and lcal requirements. Maintain: Safe perating distance arund aircraft Prper distance frm airfield lights, buildings, hangars, etc Tw-way cmmunicatins/light singals with Base Ops and Cntrl Twer, as applicable Knwledge and adherence t airfield markings/indicatrs Alertness t aircraft/vehicle mvement Awareness f prepsitined aerspace grund equipment (AGE), wheel chcks, fire extinguisher/bttle, etc Awareness f in grund refueling hydrant lids/utilities man-hle cvers Alertness t aircraft arresting system cables/anchr chains. CAUTION: Be aware f frst-heaved/uneven pavements and hidden items in snw windrws Backing. CAUTION: D NOT back up with the pick-up head r gutter brms dwn.

Ensure three pints-f-cntact when climbing n/ff sweeper Be aware f pinch hazards when cnnecting hses Discnnect and stw fill hse Pick-up and gutter brm peratinal adjustments. CAUTION: Wear glves while perfrming the belw tasks SHUT DOWN all engines befre making adjustments n the pick-up head SHUT DOWN all engines befre making adjustments n the n the gutter brms Reduce auxiliary engine RPMs befre raising the pick-up head Hand suctin hse peratins SHUT DOWN auxiliary engine. CAUTION: Be aware f pinch hazards when inserting shutter plate, latching upper inlet hse, and when clsing hand suctin hse dr. D NOT pint suctin hse at anything that is nt intended t be suctined-up Stw equipment Tire changing safety. CAUTION: Wear glves while perfrming the belw task Cnsider where the vehicle is lcated. If n a bridge, curve, rad with n shulder, etc.; it is safer t mve a vehicle with a flat tire t a safer lcatin Find a lcatin with a firm and level surface fr the jack.

If changing a rear tire, blck the frnt wheels As required, place dunnage r cribbage under the jack Vehicle Operatin General vehicle peratins Cmplete a pre-peratin vehicle inspectin Sign the current AF Frm Getting int the cab Use three pints f cntact when climbing int the vehicle The sweeper can be perated frm either side f the vehicle. When sweeping the flightline area, the peratr nrmally uses the left side seat. When perfrming street side peratins, the peratr will use the right side seat. This allws the peratr t have great visibility f the curbing alng the side f the rad Adjust the seat and mirrrs as needed; fasten seat belt Left/right side sweeping peratins. Refer t peratr s manual(s) Hand suctin hse peratins. Refer t peratr s manual(s) T start the vehicle, ensure the parking brake is set and the gear selectin is in neutral Turn the ignitin key t the ON psitin. If sweeper is equipped with a starter buttn press and release the buttn nce the engines starts. CAUTION: D nt engage the starter fr mre than 10 secnds Wait 10 t 15 secnds befre reengaging the starter if the truck des nt start n the first try Mving the sweeper.
19 Befre placing the vehicle in mtin, ensure the drs are clsed and everyne has their seat belt n Make sure the pick-up head assembly and gutter brms are in the stwed psitin when traveling t the jb site Once at the jb site, start the auxiliary engine, deply the pick up head assembly and/r gutter brms and begin sweeper peratins. CAUTION: D NOT back up with the pick up head r gutter brms dwn Fllw prcedures in Sectin 5.2. fr perating the auxiliary engine, pick-up head, and gutter brms End f duty day Perfrm pst-peratin prcedures as utlined in Sectin 5.2. Sectin 6 EXPLANATION AND DEMONSTRATION Instructr s Preparatin Establish a training lcatin Obtain apprpriate vehicle peratr s manual Schedule/reserve a vehicle Ensure trainee cmpletes AF Frm Safety Prcedures and Equipment The fllwing safety items shuld be fllwed by bth the instructr and trainee Chck wheel (if required) when sweeper is parked Remve all jewelry and identificatin tags Persnal prtective equipment (PPE) and equipment items. Nte: Discuss when applicable PPE and equipment items are required Steel-ted bts must be wrn Glves will be wrn during pick-up head and gutter brms adjustments/maintenance.

If equipped, check the Anti-lck Braking System (ABS) indicatr lights. Light n dash shuld cme n and then turn-ff. If it stays n the ABS is nt wrking prperly. Lk at the gauges. Oil pressure. Shuld cme up t nrmal within secnds after engine is started. Air pressure. Pressure shuld build frm 50 t 90 psi within 3 minutes. Build air pressure t gvernr cut-ut (usually arund psi. Knw the vehicle s requirements. Ammeter and/r vltmeter. Shuld be in nrmal range(s). Clant temperature. Shuld begin gradual rise t nrmal perating range. Engine il temperature. 44 7. Start the Engine and Check Test fr Hydraulic Leaks Secure all lse articles in cab (they might interfere with peratin f the cntrls r hit the peratr in a crash). Start the engine. Test fr hydraulic leaks. If the vehicle has hydraulic brakes, pump the brake pedal three times. Then apply firm pressure t the pedal and hld fr five secnds. The pedal shuld nt mve. If it des, there may be a leak r ther prblem. Brake system. Test parking brake. Fasten safety belt. Set parking brake (pwer unit nly). Place vehicle int a lw gear. Gently pull frward against parking brake t make sure the parking brake hlds. If it desn't hld vehicle, it is faulty; get it fixed. Test service brake stpping actin. G abut 5 miles per hur. Push brake pedal firmly. "Pulling" t ne side r the ther can mean brake truble. Any unusual brake pedal "feel" r delayed stpping actin can mean truble. If the trainee finds anything unsafe during the Vehicle inspectin, get it fixed. Federal and state laws frbid perating an unsafe vehicle. Check vehicle peratin regularly: Instruments. Air pressure gauge (if the vehicle has air brakes). Temperature gauges. Pressure gauges. Ammeter/vltmeter. Mirrrs. Tires. Carg, carg cvers. Lights, etc.
45 If the trainee sees, hears, smells, r feels anything that might mean truble, he/she shuld check it ut. Safety inspectin. Drivers f trucks and truck tractrs when transprting carg must inspect the securement f the carg within the first 50 miles f a trip and every 150 miles r every 3 hurs (whichever cmes first) after.
