Hwever, this prcedure is designed t see that any safety device perates crrectly as air pressure drps frm nrmal t a lw air cnditin. Fr safety purpses, in areas where an incline is present, the peratr will use wheel chcks during the air brake check. The prper prcedures fr inspecting the air brake system are as fllws: With the air pressure built up t gvernr cutff ( punds per square inch (psi)), shut ff the engine, chck the wheels if necessary, release the parking brake (all vehicles) and fully apply the ft brake. Hld the ft brake fr ne minute. Check the air gauge t see if the air pressure drps mre than three punds in ne minute (single vehicle) Withut re-starting the engine, turn electrical pwer t the n r battery charge psitin. Begin fanning ff the air pressure by rapidly applying and releasing the ft brake. Lw air warning devices (buzzer, light, flag) shuld activate befre air pressure drps belw 60 psi r level specified by the manufacturer Cntinue t fan ff the air pressure. 14 Inclines Uneven grund Sft surfaces Over the rad peratin Greater vehicle weight. The peratr needs t cnsider the cmbined weight f the snw blwer and the lad. This will affect the fllwing: Operatr s ability t stp. D nt tailgate the vehicle in frnt. Allw mre distance between vehicles in rder t increase reactin time Vehicle s ability t accelerate/fllw the flw f traffic. Accelerate smthly and gradually s the truck des nt jerk. Rugh acceleratin causes unnecessary, premature mechanical damage t the truck s drive train. Maintain a safe speed (typically 5 miles per hur (mph) belw the psted speed limit) Dwngrades/upgrades. The peratr will use lwer gears mre frequently t climb hills r muntains with increasing grade steepness, length and/r heavy lad weight. Plan ahead t identify dwngrades/upgrades n the rute f travel. If pssible, talk t ther drivers wh are familiar with the grades t find ut what speeds are safe. When encuntering dwngrades/upgrades as described, the peratr will need t address: Speed. On dwngrades, gravity causes the speed f the vehicle t increase. The peratr must select an apprpriate safe speed, use a lw gear, and prper braking techniques. The peratr must g slw enugh s as t nt verheat the truck brakes Stpping. If the brakes becme t ht, they may start t fade. This means the peratr will need t apply the brakes harder and harder t acquire equivalent stpping pwer Sharp turns. Slw dwn befre entering the turn. During the turn, avid sharp sudden mvements with the steering wheel. This reduces the chance f the truck weight shifting, and als prevents the pssibility f tipping ver due t the higher center f gravity Surrundings. Operating a snw blwer requires the peratr s cnstant attentin. Many situatins can be avided by simply paying clse attentin t the surrunding cnditins. Rad signs such as steep grade, lw verhead clearance, sharp turn ahead, and special speed limits are psted fr the driver s safety Blind spts. Operatrs must understand the distances where visibility is limited based n the vehicle being used.
