The driver drives straight in the left lane t the uter barrier, and backs the vehicle s it is psitined in the right lane and cntinues t back the vehicle until the frnt vehicle has cleared the frward set f cnes.

34 Figure A4.2. Offset Backing Left/Right. A4.3. Left/Right Turn (4). Include turns at traffic lights, stp signs, and uncntrlled intersectins. The turns shuld range frm easy t smewhat difficult fr cmmercial vehicles. The peratr shuld try t get a mixture f types f intersectins s that they vary in cmplexity. Try t include turns that have multiple apprach lanes and a single apprach lane turning nt a street with multiple lanes. A4.4. Lane Change (2). Include tw lane changes maneuvers. Each maneuver must include a lane change t the left and t the right. The lane change maneuvers can be cnducted during any prtin f the rad test. The lcatins shuld be suitable fr cnducting lane changes and allw enugh time fr the driver t cmplete each lane change. The lane change maneuvers may be cnducted during the expressway, urban r rural driving sectins prvided a sufficient amunt f driving distance is available. A4.5. Intersectins. Select tw thrugh intersectin and tw intersectins where a stp has t be made (a stp sign is preferred. These intersectins shuld nt be included in the urban sectin. One f the stp intersectins shuld nt be cntrlled by traffic lights (2- r 4-way stp).

35 A4.6. Railrad Crssing. Try t have an uncntrlled (n lights r stp arms) railrad crssing. The crssing shuld have enugh sight distance t see if the peratr checks left and right while appraching the crssing. The peratr s lking left and right dwn the track will ften be the nly way t tell if the peratr has nticed the crssing. A If there is n railrad crssing in the testing area, d the fllwing. Find a lightly traveled street r rad that cntains a landmark which the bserver will pint ut t the peratr. Tell the peratr t pretend that there is a railrad crssing at that pint. 44 Figure A5.2. Additinal Steps fr Inspecting Air Brakes System. Additinal Steps fr Inspecting Air Brakes Step Prcedure 2. Engine Cmpartment Checks Check air cmpressr drive belt cnditin and tightness (if cmpressr is belt driven). 5. Walk-Arund Inspecting Check manual slack adjusters n S-cam brakes. Nte: Vehicles with autmatic slack adjustrs still must be checked. Park n level grund and chck the wheels. Release the parking brakes s the peratr can mve the slack adjusters. Use glves and pull hard n each slack adjuster that it can be reached. Check slack adjuster, mre than 1-inch indicates adjustments required (vehicles with t much brake slack can be very hard t stp). Adjust it r have it adjusted. Check brake drums (r discs), linings, and hses. 7. Final Air Brake Check Test lw pressure warning signal. Shut the engine ff when the vehicle has enugh air pressure s that the lw pressure warning signal is nt n. Turn the electrical pwer n. Step n and ff the brake pedal t reduce air tank pressure. Lw air pressure warning signal shuld cme n befre the pressure drps t less than 60 psi in the air tank with lwest pressure. Check that the spring brakes cme n autmatically. Chck the wheels. Release the parking brakes when enugh air pressure is built up. Shut the engine ff. Step n and ff the brake pedal t reduce the air tank pressure. "Parking brake" knb shuld pp ut when the air pressure falls t the manufacturer's specificatin. Check rate f air pressure buildup Refer t manufacturer s recmmendatin fr average buildup time.

45 If nt within recmmended time, the air pressure may drp t lw during driving peratins. Test air leakage rate. With a fully-charged air system (typically 125 psi). Turn-ff the engine. Release the service brake and time the air pressure drp. The lss rate shuld be less than 2 psi in ne minute fr single vehicles. Nt less than 3 psi in 1 minute fr cmbinatin vehicles. Then apply 90 psi r mre with the brake pedal. After the initial pressure drp, if the air pressure falls mre than 3 psi in 1 minute fr single vehicles. Nt mre than 4 psi fr cmbinatin vehicles. Check air cmpressr gvernr cut-in and cut-ut pressures. Air cmpressr shuld start at abut 100 psi and stp at abut 125 psi. Run the engine at a fast idle. Air gvernr shuld cut-ut the air cmpressr at abut the manufacturer's specified pressure. Engine idling, step n and ff brake t reduce air tank pressure. Cmpressr shuld cut-in at manufacturer's specified cut-in pressure. Test parking brake: Stp the vehicle; put the parking brake n; gently pull against it in lw gear t determine if parking brake will hld. Test service brakes. Wait fr nrmal air pressure. Release the parking brake. Mve the vehicle frward slwly (abut 5 mph). Apply the brakes firmly using the brake pedal. Nte any vehicle "pulling" t ne side, unusual feel, r delayed stpping actin.
