College Board, College Board Onlne, Advanced Placement Program, AP, College Explorer, and the acorn logo are regstered trademarks of the College Entrance Examnaton Board. The Advanced Placement Program (AP ), a cooperatve educatonal endeavor, s based on the premse that college-level materal can be taught successfully to able and wellprepared secondary school students. Partcpatng colleges, n turn, grant credt, approprate placement, or both to students who have done well on the AP Examnatons. Approxmately 59 percent of the naton's nearly 22,000 hgh schools offer some college-level AP course work, and more than 700,000 students partcpated n the AP Program ths year. Use by both schools and students has grown steadly n recent years. As an ntermedary agent of the partcpatng nsttutons, the AP Program: provdes conferences, consultants, and currcular materals to help nterested schools establsh college-level courses; fm'tshes and grades examnatons based on the goals set forth n the AP Course Descrptons; sends examnaton grades to the students, ther schools, and ther desgnated colleges; prepares related publcatons; supports approprate research; and provdes reports to students, schools, school dstrcts, colleges, systems and consorta of colleges and unverstes, and state agences. n response to ncreased nterest n the Advanced Placement Program, the College Board produces, as part of ts reportng process, the seres of tables prnted n ths booklet reflectng student partcpaton n the 1999 AP Examnatons. A more detaled understandng of AP trends and related nformaton can be found n the companon publcaton, the 1999 AP Yearbook. The Advanced Placement Program s sponsored by the College Board wth the advce of natonal groups of educators, ts Councl on College-Level Servces, and ts academc advsory commttees n the dscplnes concerned. The College Board, founded n 1900 wth headquarters n New York Cty, s a nonproft membershp organzaton of 3,000 colleges and unverstes, schools, school systems, and educaton assocatons. ts regonal offces are dentfed on the back cover of ths publcaton. n the operaton of most of ts testng programs and related servces, the College Board contracts for techncal and operatonal servces wth Educatonal Testng Servce (ETS), an ndependent, nonproft agency wth headquarters n Prnceton, New Jersey.

3 1999 AP STATE SUMMARY REPORT TABLES These AP State Reports are produced n response to the ncreasng nterest by educatonal leaders n obtanng annual profles of AP Program partcpaton n ther states. The content and format of these comprehensve reports were developed n collaboraton wth a number of chef state school offcers and ther staffs. The reports provde an opportunty for educators and educatonal polcymakers to better understand the academc preparaton of the growng numbers of college-bound students who take one or more AP Exams n a gven year. n addton, the reports provde a backdrop aganst whch school and college admnstrators and faculty can examne Advanced Placement Program partcpaton by ther students. These reports can also be used for academc plannng by schools and colleges. The organzaton of the followng state tables s dentcal to the natonal summary report tables, whch begn on page 17. n addton to the tables found n the natonal report, however, the state report contans two addtonal tables: n-state and Out-of-State Colleges Recevng the Greatest Number of AP Grades for Students from the State. The state tables are followed by a worksheet wth examples of how to analyze the data n the tables. The frst example for each table s dentcal to the examples for the natonal tables (see page 17); smply supply the correspondng data for the state. A second example s provded for each table on the state worksheet to further llustrate how the data can be used as the bass for both nternal and external reports. n the followng tables, for each racal/ethnc group (self-reported by students), AP grade dstrbutons, totals, and mean (average) grades for each AP Examnaton are gven. The last column n each table summarzes the performance of AP canddates at each grade level. The AP gradng scale should be nterpreted as follows: ~~~~~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ { ~ ~~ ~
