3 BARLEY Acreage,, Production, Price, and Value By States, The following tables include estimates of acreage, yield, production, price and value for barley for 1866 through 19"3. These estimates are based on information furnished by crop reporters, the U. S. Census of Agriculture, cooperating State agencies, processors and other sources. For some States, data are not available for the full period. Estimates of acres planted begin with the 1926 crop. Season average prices, by States, are the estimated mid-month prices received by farmers weighted by estimated percentage sold in each month of the crop marketing season. The State season average prices for quantities sold are used to derive the value of production. The season average price for the United States is obtained by weighting State prices by quantities produced. Season average prices include an allowance at loan value for loans unredeemed at the end of the crop marketing season and for quantities bought by the Government under purchase agreement. Such allowances began with the 1940 crop. Prior to 1909, season average prices are not available and prices shown refer to December 1. The value estimates are for the marketing season and should not be confused with cash income which is calculated on a calendar year basis. Estimates for the years 1954 to date are not shown because they are subject to revision when the results of the 1959 Federal Census of Agriculture become available. For 1954 data, see Statistical Bulletins No. 185 "Field Crops by States, " and No. 208 "Field and Set:;d Crops by States, " For later years see December annual summaries of "Crop Production" and "Crop Values." Prepared by C. E. Burkhead, E. 0. Schlotzhauer, Robert S. McCauley, Field Crop Statistics Branch, Agricultural Estimates Division. Primary data were provided by State Statisticians.
