The Advanced Placement (AP ) Program, a cooperatve educatonal endeavor, s based on the premse that college-level materal can be taught successfully to able and wellprepared secondary school students. Partcpatng colleges, n turn, grant credt and/or approprate placement to students who have done well on the AP Examnatons. Approxmately 55 percent of the naton's 21,500 hgh schools offer some college-level AP course work, and more than 550,000 students partcpated n the AP Program ths year. Use by both schools and students has grown steadly n recent years. As an ntermedary agent of the partcpatng nsttutons, the AP Program: provdes conferences, consultants, and currcular materals to help nterested schools establsh college-level courses; furnshes and grades examnatons based on the goals set forth n the AP Course Descrptons; sends examnaton grades to the students, ther schools, and ther desgnated colleges; prepares related publcatons; supports approprate research; and provdes reports to students, schools, school dstrcts, colleges, systems and consorta of colleges and unverstes, and state agences. n response to ncreased nterest n the Advanced Placement Program, the College Board produces, as part of ts reportng process, the followng seres of tables reflectng student partcpaton n the 1997 AP Examnatons. 3 oo , , , , AP NATONAL SUMMARY REPORT TABLES n each table, for each racal/ethnc group (self-reported by students), AP grade dstrbutons, totals, and mean (average) grades for each AP Examnaton are gven. The AP gradng scale should be nterpreted as follows: 5 = extremely well qualfed, 4 = well qualfed, 3 = qualfed, 2 = possbly qualfed, 1 = no recommendaton. The last column n each table summarzes the performance of AP canddates at each grade level. The eght examples below, taken from the natonal summary tables, llustrate ways n whch the data can be used. All Canddates The Natonal Total lne ndcates 566,720 canddates took 899,463 Advanced Placement Examnatons n These canddates represented 11,424 U.S. secondary schools. Total program partcpaton also ncluded 22,138 examnatons (for a global total of 921,601 exams) taken by 14,834 canddates from approxmately 598 schools abroad. Reference Page 3 Males 69,225 or 46 /6 of all AP Unted States Hstory Examnatons were taken by males. Females 51,182 or 47% of all AP Calculus AB Examnatons were taken by females. 12th-Grade Canddates 145,430 or 48% of all 12th-grade canddates took the AP Englsh Lterature and Composton Examnaton. 1 lth-grade Canddates 216,250 or 38% of all canddates takng AP Examnatons were secondary school junors. Reports Desgnated for n-state Colleges 8,055 or 63% of students who dentfed themselves as Black/Afrcan Amercans desgnated n-state colleges to receve ther AP Grade Reports nstead of out-of-state colleges (also see page 9). Reports Desgnated for Out-of-State Colleges Of the 341,233 AP Examnaton grades of 3-5 that were reported to colleges, canddates desgnated 40% of these grades to be sent to out-of-state colleges. Partcpaton by Exam: Publc School Canddates 37,151 or 66% of the publc school canddates takng the AP Bology Examnaton earned grades of 3, 4, or 5. 10
