This pocess achieves the highest degee of cleanliness and unifomity of stuctue fo this mateial. M50 m50 high-speed steel is a high-pefomance tool steel containing molybdenum, chomium and vanadium. This mateial is suited to main shaft beaings in gas tubine engines, howeve, it solves many othe application poblems as well. m50 has geate wea esistance than both 440C and and can opeate at tempeatues as high as 600 F (316 C). M62 m62 supe-high-pefomance tool steel is a high-alloyed steel with vey high hadness, excellent wea esistance and supeio hot hadness. m62 is used in sevee sevice applications with tempeatues up to 1000 F (538 C). in addition, m62 has demonstated 10 times the fatigue life compaed to standad beaing steels. eyllium coppe eyllium coppe is a pecipitation hadening alloy of 2 pecent beyllium in coppe used in applications whee non-magnetic and electical conductivity popeties ae equied. it has fa less hadness (HC 38 minimum), wea esistance and stength than conventional beaing mateials, esulting in lowe load atings. hybid beaings Hybid beaings may pefom significantly bette than an all-steel beaing in applications whee maginal lubication, high speed and high heat ae factos. Silicon nitide and titanium cabide hybid beaings ae cuently used in many applications including gimbal, gyo spin, aicaft accessoy and dental handpieces. when the intenal ball and aceway sufaces of a ball beaing ae not sepaated by a sufficient oil film thickness, the suface finish high points (known as aspeities) can contact each othe. when the balls and aces ae made of the same mateial, the aspeities can weld togethe unde the vey high localized contact stesses that occu, esulting in suface damage, paticle geneation, and ultimately shotened beaing sevice life. Fo unlubicated o maginally lubicated applications, ceamic balls eliminate ballto-ace aspeity welding, and the esulting negative effects on beaing sevice life. Titanium cabide coated stainless-steel balls offe the same benefits, but ae suggested fo use in maginally lubicated applications only. Contact you Timken enginee to detemine the suggested solution fo you application. in high-speed applications the lowe density of silicon nitide significantly educes the centifugal foces of the balls on the oute ace. eaings with silicon nitide balls also opeate coole and exhibit less vibation. most Timken beaings may be odeed with silicon nitide o titanium cabide coated balls in combination with 440C and steel ings. Nickel-cobalt alloys nickel-cobalt alloys ae used in beaings developed by Timken fo applications equiing non-magnetic and noncoosive mateials with geate load capacity than beyllium coppe beaings. while not coonly used, these mateials can be used in applications such as medical components, seawate, chemical and food pocessing envionments. ecause these mateials cannot be hadened past HC 40, they yield beaings with elatively low static capacities, and so thei application needs to be consideed vey caefully. Geneally, inceasing the contact angle inceases axial load capacity, axial stiffness and moment stiffness, but at the expense of adial load capacity and adial stiffness. eceasing the contact angle has the opposite effect. Thee is a geometic limit to inceasing contact angle. Too geat a contact angle incease esults in the ball/aceway contact path eaching the edge of the aceway, which is called tuncation. The contact angle is coonly efeed to in two conditions fee contact angle and loaded contact angle. Fee contact angle is the contact angle of a beaing with its axial play emoved but without any axial loads applied. Fee contact angle is geometically elated to the beaing aceway cuvatue and adial play. with all othe paametes fixed, inceasing adial play inceases fee contact angle. Loaded contact angle is the contact angle of a beaing unde an applied axial load. The loaded contact angle is the fee contact angle plus the incease due to the applied axial load. Radial play, also known as adial intenal cleaance o diametal cleaance, is the total ange of movement in the adial diection that one ing can have elative to the othe. Radial play Fig. 16. adial play. Pope selection of adial play is essential fo pefomance of a beaing. Radial play impacts the following aspects of a beaing: Contact angle. Axial play. Axial and adial capacity. The lubication of a beaing does the following: educe fiction and wea of contacting sufaces. Potect sufaces fom oxidation/coosion. Othe aspects of beaing pefomance impacted by lubication ae: Opeating tempeatue management. Contamination management. EducE FIcTIoN and WEa A lubicant may be seen as a sepaating laye between two sliding sufaces. its pupose is to inhibit suface wea while maintaining the lowest possible fiction toque level. The ball and aceway sufaces, although pecision honed and lapped, appea micoscopically as a patten of peaks and valleys. when ubbed togethe unde the high unit loading inheent in point contact, these aspeities ae thought to weld togethe, then beak off, initiating an adhesive wea pocess which ultimately damages the beaing. Adhesive wea is inhibited by: elastohydodynamic (eh) film. ounday lubication. mixed-film lubication. Ehd FIlMS eh films ae geneated dynamically in a otating beaing and ae a function of the beaing s speed, opeating load and the lubicant s viscosity in the contact aea. Lubicant viscosity typically inceases when subject to pessue but deceases at elevated tempeatues so the lubicant viscosity in the contact aea is a function of the lubicant popeties, beaing speed, opeating load and opeating tempeatues. olling element-toace contacts can be effectively sepaated by the high lubicant viscosities geneated unde the typical suface contact pessues which ae in the hundeds of thousands of pounds pe squae inch. Once sepaated by a distance geate than the combined aspeity height, the sufaces will not contact and adhesive wea will be eliminated. ounday luicating FIlMS ounday lubicating films ae fomed on machined-steel sufaces as chemically absobed compounds esulting fom the suface s inteaction with its envionment. Pefeed films may be fomed by chemical teatment of the suface as it is pocessed and by additives in the lubicating fluid. MIXEd-FIlM luication This combination of eh film and bounday conditions descibes the egime in which many miniatue, instument and thin-section ball beaing contacting sufaces opeate. opeating TEMPEaTuE MaNagEMENT Lubication can have a significant impact on the opeating tempeatue of a beaing. This impact can eithe be positive o negative. Lubication can positively impact beaing opeating tempeatue when the lubication method and quantity is popely configued to both educe heat geneation and suppot heat emoval fom the beaing. Convesely, excessive lubicant quantity o too high a lubicant viscosity can esult in excessive heat geneation due to sheaing of the lubicant. contamination MaNagEMENT Lubication also can be used to manage beaing contamination. The actual contact suface lubication pefomance of a geaselubicated beaing is povided pimaily by the base oil used in the gease. 36 ENgINEEINg load atings Load atings Load atings ae povided as a guide fo beaing selection when consideing the application equiements. iffeences in the methods of load ating calculation exist within the industy and cae should be taken when compaing diffeent manufactues catalog load ating values. Load atings in this catalog ae calculated fo beaing steels using the mean of the standad adial play ange o in the case of angula-contact beaings, the nominal contact angle tabulated. dynamic load ating eaing life may be defined as the length of time a beaing will opeate satisfactoily in the application at its opeating speed unde an applied load. Life pedictions depend on caeful definition of failue citeia and consideation of the full ange of opeating conditions, including load cycles, opeating speeds, mounting pactice, envionmental conditions and contamination. The expected fatigue life unde opeating loads is often not the most impotant design consideation in the selection of instument ball beaings. The dynamic load-ating figues ae pesented pimaily to pemit a compaison of the load-caying potential fo beaings of simila mateial but diffeing in size, intenal design and ball complement. Life pedictions ae necessaily non-pecise because of the inteaction of these many paametes. Thee is an established method of calculating fatigue life, outlined in iso/ama Standads. The iso/ama ating Life (L 10 ) is the numbe of evolutions, o hous at constant speed, that 90 pecent of a goup of nominally identical beaings will attain, o exceed, befoe the fist evidence of fatigue develops. The dynamic load ating (C) is the constant adial load, stationay with espect to the oute ing, that a beaing can endue fo a ating life of one million evolutions of the inne ing, o 500 hous at 33 1/3 Pm. The dynamic load ating is detemined by beaing geomety, numbe and size of balls, beaing pitch diamete, and ing and ball mateial. The dynamic load ating (C) fo each beaing is shown in the tabulations in the body of the catalog. This load ating is used in conjunction with the actual applied adial load () to calculate beaing fatigue life as follows: whee: L 10 = 1666 [ C ] 3 n L 10 = ating life in hous n = Speed of inne ing otation, in Pm C = ynamic load ating = Applied pue adial load, in lbs. The ating life as defined above elates solely to metal fatigue and assumes nominal beaing configuation, alignment, lubication and cleanliness. in addition, these load atings and life calculations ae based on the application of a pue adial load. note that the dynamic load ating value is used only in life calculations and, fo instument beaing applications, should not be appoached in actual applied load. Opeating loads should not appoach the ated value. iso/ama standads state that static load atings depend on the maximum contact stess between the balls and eithe of the two aceways. it is affected by mateial, numbe and size of balls, aceway cuvatues, aceway depths and contact angle. A maximum contact stess level of 580,000 PSi (4.0 GPa) has been established as a satisfactoy limit fo most instument-beaing applications and is the basis fo static load atings tabulated hee whee low vibation and fictional toque levels ae of pimay concen, applied loads should esult in no moe than 508,000 PSi (3.5 GPa) maximum contact stess, epesenting an appoximate 40 pecent eduction fom the tabulated static load atings. Cleaance holes o tapped holes in close poximity to the shaft seat o housing boe can cause distotions in the final fitted beaing. many customes need to install beaings easily, which will necessitate loose fits on both the shaft and in the housing. Some customes also utilize adhesives duing fitting of the beaing, in which case the shaft and housing sizes will be dictated by the cleaance equied by the adhesive. uing final assembly of a beaing with adhesive, much cae must be taken to keep adhesive, pime, seale, cuing agents, etc., out of the beaing, o ealy beaing damage will esult. 42 ENgINEEINg EaINg TESTINg eaing testing EaINg ToquE TESTINg all beaing fictional toque measuements ae dependent upon beaing speed, load, alignment, intenal geometies and suface finishes. Since beaing applications involve infinite vaiations of these paametes, Timken has standadized poduction tests fo measuement of both stating toque and unning toque. These tests compae beaing pefomance levels unde standadized test conditions but do not necessaily simulate actual application levels. These tests meet o exceed guidelines established in mil- ST-206, the most compehensive toque specification in the industy. Toque testing conditions othe than the ones defined in mil-st-206 ae available upon equest. STaTINg ToquE MEaSuEMENT Stating toque, defined as the toque necessay to stat beaing otation unde an applied thust load, is measued unde a 5 gm thust load on beaings with an O.. of 3/8 o less, 400 gm on lage beaing sizes, and is expessed in milligam-millimetes. Toque testing is pefomed fo customes equiing veification that a beaing is capable of meeting a cetain toque limit. 43 ENgINEEINg EaINg TESTINg unning-toque MEaSuEMENT unning toque is the esistance to otation unde specific opeating paametes. Timken can pefom unning-toque measuements on most miniatue, instument and thin-section ball beaing types and sizes. when testing miniatue beaings to mil-st-206, a low otational speed of 2 Pm is used and loads of 5 gm o 400 gm ae applied axially to the beaing. Thin-section beaings ae tested unde use specified loads and speeds. This type of testing is usually eseved fo customes who equie an estimate of the aveage toque it takes to opeate the beaing. Typically, customes will define a maximum unning toque so they ae sue that the diving components in thei system will have the ability to opeate coectly on a continuous basis. ToquE TacES eaing unning-toque taces can help ensue maximum pefomance of beaings by visually identifying poblems in existing beaing equipment o identifying poblems pio to use. 47 ENgINEEINg EaINg handling eaing handling miniatue, instument and thin-section ball beaings ae pecision devices that povide long sevice life when popely specified and applied. Howeve, unskilled o caeless handling will inevitably esult in poo pefomance and life. many poblems encounteed by miniatue, instument and thin-section beaing uses ae ceated though impope handling. Paticulate contamination into miniatue, instument and thinsection ball beaings is pobably the most univesal poblem and one of the moe difficult to contol. miniatue, instument and thin-section ball beaings ae used in toque and noise-sensitive applications. even vey small paticles of foeign matte, even a few micoinches in size can degade the quiet-unning qualities and low-toque values of the beaing. Paticulate contamination must be contolled thoughout the entie life of the beaing. Timken miniatue, instument and thinsection beaings ae manufactued, assembled, inspected, tested and packaged unde igidly contolled conditions. it is impeative that beaing uses extend good handling pactices so that the full pefomance potential of Timken beaings may be ealized. Some fundamentals to peseve beaing cleanliness ae: Clean wok aeas. Popely dessed pesonnel. Cleaned and maintained beaing handling instuments and elated equipment. Pope handling techniques. The custome should maintain demagnetized beaing condition. Timken beaings should be kept in the oiginal, unopened packages until eady fo installation. Only the actual equied numbe of beaings should be emoved fom the package at a time. eaings should be emoved fom the potective package only in a clean, dy and dust-fee atmosphee. if the beaings ae emoved fom thei packaging, any unused beaings should be stoed and popely identified in clean, dy, coveed containes. it is pefeable to handle beaings with specifically designed, handheld instuments, such as pecision non-magnetic tweezes. in some instances, it may be necessay to handle beaings by hand. in this case, clean, dy, talc-fee, silicon-fee finge cots o gloves should be won. micoscopic skin paticles shed easily fom hands and can cause beaing contamination. Futhemoe, most beaing steels, othe than AiSi 440C, will coode apidly fom moistue and othe esidue left afte skin contact. A contolled wok envionment fo handling beaings will help to educe contamination and coosion poblems. ideally, a clean oom should be used fo installation of pecision assemblies. if not available, an individual hooded wok-station o lamina flow bench may be used. Timken beaings ae thooughly inspected, washed and lubicated to stingent specifications pio to final packaging. Timken beaings ae usually eady fo iediate installation without the need fo futhe cleaning o lubication. if any beaings become accidentally contaminated, it is suggested they be etuned to Timken fo cleaning and elubication. note: Timken beaings ae thooughly demagnetized pio to shipment to the custome. Since beaings can potentially become patially magnetized duing shipment, it is suggested that the custome pefom a demagnetization pocess, if applicable. 48 ENGINEERING EARING ONE-ROW INSTALLATION METRIC ISO SERIES EARING INSTALLATION The mounting components, shafts/housings/elated hadwae and tooling should be thooughly cleaned pio to any contact with the beaing. The oveall pefomance of a ball beaing is significantly affected by the geomety of the mating components. Shaft o housing diametes and geomety must be established befoe any attempt is made to install the beaings (see shaft and housing toleances, page 38-39). Intefeence fits with the shaft o housing povides positive etention and location. Excessive intefeence between the beaing and mounting sufaces will educe the designed intenal cleaances. Geometic eos such as out-of-oundness will be tansfeed to the mating beaing ing. Theefoe, a ound beaing can be distoted by an out-of-ound shaft o housing. Cleaance fits do not affect beaing geomety, but also do not povide fo the same degee of positive positioning as intefeence fits. Cleaance fits ae pone to fetting coosion at the mounting intefaces duing nomal opeation. Installation tooling must be popely designed and manufactued. Impotant points to conside ae: Tooling should be designed to be easily cleaned and emain bu fee. Tooling should mount the beaings squaely onto the shaft o into the housing. Misalignment duing installation can seveely distot a beaing. Tooling must be designed and used in a manne that will not damage a beaing. All installation foces must be tansmitted though the mounting ing and not though the balls. Tansfeing the foce though the balls will esult in damage to the balls and aces, esulting in high toque and noise. See fig. 32. Shock o impact techniques should neve be used to mount the beaing. iffeential themal expansion methods may be used in the assembly to educe the amount of foce equied to mount the beaing. eaings may be tempoaily heated up to 25 F (+135 C) to aid in assembly onto shafts.
