Quote of the Month You can forget what you do for a living when your knees are in the breeze! Lots has happened since my last article. The first District Ride-In was held on Saturday, October 6th. It was a beautiful ride through hills and horse country and everyone raved about the day. We then had a picnic at Silver Springs and then we all boarded the glass bottom boat to look through crystal clear water to see some beautiful fish, turtles, alligators and plant life. The kids loved it and it was a fun day for all. We had another installment of our "Around the World" ride to a very good Italian restaurant in the Brownwood area of The Villages. What a neat place they have made there. Not only was our dinner very good but the ice cream afterwards was just as good. That is a place I would like to visit again. On Saturday, October 20th we held our Hillbilly Hoedown. I do believe all attendees had a great time. I know I did. One of our attendees looked at the plates of food we were serving and said "spectacular." A nice compliment indeed. It all ran very smoothly, it was a great fundraiser for us and it was nice to see 13 Chapters and District staff get together and have some laughs. I think our game prizes were fantastic and most everyone won something. Thank you to all of you who donated your time, food, game prizes, auction prizes and made it such a success. At the rally we I decided to name our new Couple of the Year. By now everyone knows our couple is Lonnie and Carol Parham. It is a well-deserved award for two people who not only have been a wonderful addition to FL1-A, but a couple that has done a lot for GWRRA in general. Congratulations to Lonnie and Carol. We are proud to call you Chapter FL1-A Couple of the Year! Joanne, Carol, Vicki, Barb, Keith and I are looking forward to the Wingers and Waves Cruise on November 4th. Lots of other GWRRA folks will be on board and there are some special parties arranged just for us. Believe it or not there will be a 50/50 too. How great is that!! Holidays are upon us with Thanksgiving this month. I can hardly believe it but there it is. We have a full calendar from now until 2019 so join in on the fun. Old tires on a bike that is not ridden too often have an additional concern. It is not just how much tread is left on the tire that should determine whether or not you replace a tire. With age the rubber of the tire gets more brittle and the tire can begin to dry rot. The sidewalls become more rigid, which can destroy your handling capabilities in curves. The surface rubber getting harder will also affect the tire's grip ability, especially in hard braking. The sidewall could also separate and you could have a blowout. Also remember to properly inflate any tire for maximum handling and longevity. So, "Tires are Pretty." They are the lifeline between you and the road's surface. 5 RIDING IN A GROUP No, this isn t going to be a Group or Team Riding seminar. Just some observations I have noticed from having the opportunity to getting back in the saddle, so to speak. For a number of years now, Pam and I haven t had the privilege to ride with too many groups. When we went to visit chapters it was usually a twofold mission. We not only visit the chapter but also are delivering or picking up MFA equipment or something else where we cannot take the bike. Also, we were pretty tied up with some outside work and some family issues so didn t have too much of a chance to get involved with the chapter like we would like to. Rick & Pam Northrop Having joined up with FL1-T, Inverness, and becoming their Assistant Chapter Director we have regained the joy of chapter life and Pam and I are doing a lot more group riding. I have observed in a number of areas some great things in group riding. A pre-ride safety meeting. Things where the leader called out turns, issues on the road, side of the road, etc., lane changes. Where the tail-gunner (drag), continuously watched the bikes ahead, kept them together, cleared traffic for lane changes, etc. Great teamwork! Then I have been on some rides where the whole group kinda did their own thing. No formation of any kind. No leadership from the lead bike other than where the group went. The tail-gunner was just the tail bike. Kinda scary. No pre-ride safety meeting. These are just some observations I have seen over the past few months. Some a good while ago, some fairly recent. Having been in Rider Ed most of my GWRRA life there is a special place in my heart for Rider Education. Saying all that to come to this, GWRRA has some fantastic safety training seminars for just the title of this missive. Group Riding, Team Riding and especially the Road Captain Course. And guess what, they are all FREE! Yup they don t cost you a thing other than about an hour or two of your time. Pretty cool, huh? Wouldn t it be awesome if when you rode over to another chapter and they were going on some sort of a ride and you were going to join in and all you had to do was just fall in line? Everybody would be on the same page! Everybody would know pretty much what everybody else was doing. WHY? For SAFETY! That s WHY! All would be safe and have FUN! Need one of these seminars?
