This is the day that the Empire of Japan surrendered to the Allied Forces ending WWII At the Arkansas District Rally held in Eureka Springs on July, there were 130 people in attendance. Not a large crowd but everyone had fun. Each chapter from Arkansas was represented in addition to some from other states. Each chapter was encouraged to submit entries for judging in several categories. With Angie s help, we put together items for the chapter pride table. Although chapter E did not win in that category, we did win first place in others. First place in the hat competition, tee shirt and cloth banner. We are very proud of these entries and receiving these awards. We want to thank Dan and Sylvia Gruben for assisting us on stage when presenting these items for judging as well as those in attendance from our chapter in the audience. Pictures of our entries are included in this newsletter. We will bring all these with us at the next chapter meeting. A big change is coming from GWRRA. Effective January 1 st, 2018, all Region Teams will be dissolved. This means that there will no longer be a Region Rally or other events. The Districts will report to the National Team directly. Richard and Vicki Austin, our Arkansas District Directors will be visiting each chapter in the coming months to explain why this is happening and what to expect from GWRRA. As a reminder, Wing Ding 39 is taking place in Grapevine Texas from August 29 -September 2, I have a limited supply of the official program for Wing ding 39 and will bring them with me to our chapter meeting on 19 August. 5 13 riders Joined together for a 130 mile fun ride through the mountains. On to Lunch at Perryville, AR Bob & Lou joined us after they had a new battery put in. We had Lunch at Jones Family Restaurant and then back down 9 to Crows Hwy 5 to the Village around 1:30.

8 Hello! Vicki and I hope everybody is doing well. Well, we had a great time at the Arkansas District Rally. We had 130 People registered. We had 21 vendors which included 4 outdoor vendors. We had Noland Pin striping, Iron Horse Lighting, Hartland Honda, Horizon Trikes, and AJ Detail. The venue for the rally was at the Inn of the Ozarks in Eureka Springs. It was a great place and if you need to have an event please contact Randy Wolfnburger. I would like to thank Randy and his staff for all of their help. We could not have had a great rally without them. We would like to say congratulations to Chapter D for being the Chapter of the Year. They worked hard to keep the paperwork that is necessary to get this award. Vicki and I would like to say a special thanks to the district team, Bill Shryock, Buster Carter, Rick and Becky Farmer, Johnny and Mildred Glasscock. Without their help this would not have been possible. Becky went above and beyond to get all of the registration packets and money put together. Thanks! Vicki and I and the rest of the team decided to give Bill Shryock an award for all of the time and effort for being the district webmaster for the last ten years. Thanks Bill. We had a great light parade. We had a police escort that led us through the downtown of Eureka Springs and back to the hotel. There was 31 bikes that went in the parade. We put on quite a show!!! The theme dress for the rally was the Roaring Twenty s. There was quite a show of Gangsters and Flappers. The door prizes were auctioned off. When you got your registration pack there was $1000 dollars included. Every time you participated at the games or the vendors you received $20 more dollars. When it came time for the auction you could bid on what you wanted. There was a Tupperware bowl that went for $7100 dollars!!!. So of you missed the Rally please plan on attending next year. There is some changes coming to GWRRA. Vicki and I had a conference call with Anita Alkire, the President of GWRRA on Tuesday night. The region team will dissolve on January 1 st That means that there will no longer be a Region Rally or other events. The Districts will report to the National Team direct. The district team will be the District Director, District Treasurer, District Ride Educator and District Trainer. Under the District Ride educator there will be a District Ride Coordinator. Vicki and I are planning to attend each chapter and try to explain as much as we know right now. As things change we will try get the word out. 15 Max led us on a ride to Mr. Whisker s Restaurant We traveled on Moore Rd to Amity Rd. This road has many Thoroughbred Horse Farms. The horses and farms were beautiful. When we came out of the restaurant, Max had a surprise on his Trike. Someone must have seen Skip s Red Gorilla on his trike so they put a yellow Care Bear on Max s Trike Whoever that was Thank You from Max

19 An Arkansas Biker s Most Important Skill This is a rehash of previous articles and discussion topics but the subject matter is to critically important not to be repeated. I often look at what causes motorcycle accidents in Arkansas and what we can do as riders to ride safer. The short answer is that Goldwingers are already doing many things to avoid becoming a statistic. For instance, more than 50% of all motorcycle accidents in Arkansas involve alcohol. Further, speeding is a heavy contributor to accidents. When you speed, every mistake you make is amplified and can result in severe injury and/or death. Most of our riders prefer to ride at a leisurely pace sober!! We also like group rides which are proven to be safer. So, having said this, where should we focus our efforts??? For this answer, I turn to accident statistics. 2/3 of all serious motorcycle accidents in Arkansas occur on rural roads and involve only the motorcyclist. This is almost the exact reverse of most other states. If you were to restore all of the white crosses that were temporarily placed along the highway to mark where bikers have been killed, you would be shocked by the sheer number. It should come as no surprise that the vast majority of those crosses were located in corners. The next time you ride, note what would happen if you missed a curve on the typical mountainous road. You stand a very high probability of serious injury and/or death. This article is not intended to be a full discussion of cornering, for that, look at the in depth article on Chapter E s website under Chapter Education and other web based articles. This is a brief review of the key elements of cornering intended to raise your awareness. First, make sure your tires are inflated to factory specification. If they are over or under inflated, it can have a profound impact on your ability to corner correctly. Second, if you are riding in formation and approach other than a gentle mild curve, concentrate on properly setting up and riding the curve. Break formation to position your motorcycle for proper execution of the turn. This is critical since your desire to stay in formation might compromise your ability to make a curve. Third, look as far through the curve as possible with two objectives in mind. Determine how much speed to need to scrub off before entering the curve (the yellow suggested speed signs are a big help in making this determination); find your exit point for that turn; accelerate smoothly through the turn and if necessary adjust your speed so you do not override your line of sight. Fourth, if you are on two wheels, keep your head as vertical as possible while riding the curve. Look at pictures of road racers and you will see that their heads are cocked to make them more upright. Try it both ways and you will see a clear difference in control. Fifth, ride outside, inside, outside. You are rounding off a corner which makes it easier to ride. It also makes it easier to dodge traffic coming the other direction. Upon entering the turn you should be able to smoothly accelerate through it. If you find yourself making small adjustments during the turn, you technique needs work and/or you need more practice. In Europe, they refer to this as 50 pencing. Sixth, stay 100% focused throughout the curve. A split second lapse of attention could result in crashing.
