TWO-WHEEL TOPICS & 3-WHEEL THOUGHTS Greg Reinhardt Chapter C Educator 10 Ways To Keep Cool In Hot Weather On A Motorcycle For when you don t want to feel the burn Summer is most certainly upon us in the northern hemisphere. That means lounging at the beach, sunburns, and beautiful long days to enjoy rides on your motorcycle. Summer means different things depending on your geographic location, from triple-digit scorchers to high humidity levels that have you sweating before you even strap on a helmet. Riders try various methods to coping with hot weather. Some people will always wear leather, some choosing mesh and textile in the hotter months, and others no gear at all, the latter being a really bad idea. There are plenty of ways for riders to keep cool during the summer that will help you stay in top condition and keep you comfortable and focused on riding. Let s take a look at some of the ways to keep you cool as a cucumber during your summer rides. 1. Mesh Gear I suffered through many years of wearing leather in Illinois hot and humid summers before realizing how much more comfortable a good textile mesh jacket could be. Textile mesh motorcycle gear is one way to keep you on your bike in the summer months while maintaining a level of protection. Mesh jackets and pants are a great way to give you airflow while bouncing around town on those hot, humid summer days. Nearly every major motorcycle gear manufacturer produces some sort of summer offering, so there are no shortage of options. 2. Cooling Products Cooling vests and other cooling accessories to be worn under ventilated jackets will help keep you comfortable in extreme temperatures. Most of these products work by soaking the garment in water, letting it absorb as much as possible, giving it a quick wringing out, and then donning and wearing under your ventilated outer gear. 3. Technical Base Layers Base layers are designed to keep you comfortable and dry. Many manufacturers make different base layers for different scenarios. We have seen moisture-wicking base layers produced by everyone from Nike and Adidas to Alpinestars and Dainese. With modern technology and research in textiles, we are now seeing base layers that can create a cooling effect as they evaporate moisture from your body, keeping you not just dry but also cool.
4. Wet Yourself There is, of course, the old-fashioned way of staying cool. Motorcyclists and hikers have been doing it since the dawn of time, or nearly that long. Simply dousing yourself and/or gear in water and hitting the road. The idea works the same as our more technologically advanced options previously mentioned. While it won t last as long before you dry and start warming back up, pending on your specific situation, it is an option anyone can use at little to no cost. 5. Hydration Packs Hydration is essential to survival when riding in hot climates. Whether you are out on the trail or simply cutting through the desert on asphalt, it is imperative to stay hydrated, which will keep your brain from shrinking and causing poor decisions to be made. Hydration backpacks are a great way to keep yourself hydrated while on the bike. Not a fan of wearing a backpack? Some tank bags offer a pocket for your hydration system. 6. Light-Colored Gear Light-colored gear can save you a few degrees versus darker colors. White leather and white textile can be hard to keep clean, but it can be worth the hassle to stay a bit cooler in extreme conditions. 7. Gore-Tex Gore-Tex is an amazing invention and used in all sorts of applications across many industries. I know what you re thinking: Isn t that just waterproof, and won t I be hot? The short answer is no. Gore-Tex is designed to keep you comfortable in all climates. While Gore-Tex is a waterproof breathable membrane, it will also keep you from losing too much moisture in extreme conditions. Having too much air flow in extreme conditions may feel nice in the short term but can dehydrate you faster. 8. Cover Up! Staying fully covered may sound counter-intuitive when dealing with scorching temperatures, but it will keep your precious skin from getting broiled and can help keep you from losing too much moisture as sweat evaporates. Both can make for an uncomfortable or life-threatening experience. Remember to apply sunscreen to any areas you can t maintain coverage. 9. Take Breaks Taking a break can be just as important as anything else on this list. Professional athletes know that recovery is just as important as practice when it comes to performing their best. It is no different when it comes to riding. Taking a rest to give your body a break and time to take in some water and food can be essential. Find some shade and hydrate; your body will thank you. 10. Full-Face Helmets A light-colored well-ventilated full-face helmet can provide some of the same benefits previously mentioned, such as keeping dehydrating air off of your face. It will also provide shade for your noggin, and a light-colored lid will suck in a bit less light and heat than a dark one. It and a tinted windscreen will also keep bugs and UV rays off of your face. Most importantly, it will provide protection for your brain in a fall.
District Dirt Richard & Vicki Austin District Directors Hello! Vicki and I hope everybody is doing well. Well, we had a great time at the Arkansas District Rally. We had 130 People registered. We had 21 vendors which included 4 outdoor vendors. We had Noland Pin striping, Iron Horse Lighting, Hartland Honda, Horizon Trikes, and AJ Detail. The venue for the rally was at the Inn of the Ozarks in Eureka Springs. It was a great place and if you need to have an event please contact Randy Wolfnburger. I would like to thank Randy and his staff for all of their help. We could not have had a great rally without them. We would like to say congratulations to Chapter D for being the Chapter of the Year. They worked hard to keep the paperwork that is necessary to get this award. Vicki and I would like to say a special thanks to the district team, Bill Shryock, Buster Carter, Rick and Becky Farmer, Johnny and Mildred Glasscock. Without their help this would not have been possible. Becky went above and beyond to get all of the registration packets and money put together. Thanks! Vicki and I and the rest of the team decided to give Bill Shryock an award for all of the time and effort for being the district webmaster for the last ten years. Thanks Bill. We had a great light parade. We had a police escort that led us through the downtown of Eureka Springs and back to the hotel. There was 31 bikes that went in the parade. We put on quite a show!!! The theme dress for the rally was the Roaring Twenty s. There was quite a show of Gangsters and Flappers.
The door prizes were auctioned off. When you got your registration pack there was $1000 dollars included. Every time you participated at the games or the vendors you received $20 more dollars. When it came time for the auction you could bid on what you wanted. There was a Tupperware bowl that went for $7100 dollars!!!. So of you missed the Rally please plan on attending next year. There is some changes coming to GWRRA. Vicki and I had a conference call with Anita Alkire, the President of GWRRA on Tuesday night. The region team will dissolve on January 1st That means that there will no longer be a Region Rally or other events. The Districts will report to the National Team direct. The district team will be the District Director, District Treasurer, District Ride Educator and District Trainer. Under the District Ride educator there will be a District Ride Coordinator. Vicki and I are planning to attend each chapter and try to explain as much as we know right now. As things change we will try get the word out. Ride Often and Ride Safe Richard & Vicki Austin
Education Extras Arrel E. Carter III (Buster) District Educator Greetings, I hope this finds everyone doing well and staying cool. The heat is rough.a number of you have been asking if we are having any type of Rider Education events as there are a number of GWRRA members that need classes for their Levels Program. The answer is yes. I am trying to work out the First Aid part. We will have ARC and TRC courses on Saturday Aug 5th and Sunday Aug 6th at the MSF facility in Little Rock. Lloyd has scheduled the weekend for GWRRA members. We will have room for 8 bikes in each class. We are looking at Trikes on the range in the morning while the ARC takes Medic First Aid, then in the afternoon we will rotate where the ARC is on the Range and TRC is taking First Aid. With the influx of members transitioning to Trike I anticipate the TRC will fill up first. That said, it is first come, first served. I cannot stress enough that you sign up early. Please do not sign a bunch of people up thinking they will want the course. There are a lot of riders needing these courses. Please send me an and I will add riders to the list. If your Co-Rider does not want to ride on the course they need to take the Co- Rider Certification class in order to maintain their levels. I will be prepared to give the Co-Rider class during the MSF Training as well. Please confirm they WILL be able to attend. The prices are based on full classes. It will be hotter than blue blazes. The costs will be $50.00 for the Rider course and $25.00 for the Medic First Aid. I will need to know which day and class you are wanting to take. Once the class is filled it is filled so sign up early and commit to that day and time. I look forward to seeing you there. Ride Smart, Ride Safe, Ride Protected Arrel E. Carter III (Buster)
Directors Corner Jim & Reba Berry Region H Directors Hello Region H, First, congrats to Sarah and Bill Watts and their KS District Team for a job well done at their rally. Lots of fun! Wing Ding 39 is less than 2 months away. As the host Region, we have the great responsibility and challenge to make sure all our guests have a GREAT TIME IN GRAPEVINE! After all, we are the H ospitality Region. You can help by going online to our region website at and clicking on the link to the Pre-registration form signup. We need a bunch of volunteers. This will absolutely be a great experience. We will be stationed on Level 1 of the Convention Center which is also the location of the vendors. We will have plenty of seating in air conditioned comfort. We will, in effect, be the greeters to all our family and friends as they arrive. Tuesday afternoon and all day Wednesday will be very busy days. There could be as many as 1500 members come through to pick up their packets on Tuesday as they will need their armband to get into the food tent at the welcome party in downtown Grapevine that evening. Then after the opening ceremony on Wednesday, we can also expect a large volume of registration activity. Please sign up to help today. If you haven t already registered, we encourage you to do so. This is the Granddaddy of Wing Dings. The 40th anniversary edition. Have you seen the spotlight section in the latest Wing World? This venue looks absolutely gorgeous and accommodating. It is possibly the best Wing Ding facility I have seen. Yes, it is expensive, but it will be quite a memorable event. Remember, it doesn t cost much more to go First Class. We can t wait to see you there! Jim & Reba
By the Book Jack Wagner Deputy Director -- Region H Trainer By the Book articles are intended to help familiarize GWRRA Volunteer Leaders and Members with the policies, procedures, and information contained in the GWRRA Officer s Handbook (OHB). A copy of the Officer s Handbook can be found at the following Internet website: Please feel free to reprint these articles in Region, District, or Chapter newsletters. THE IDEALS OF GWRRA The most important ingredient for a successful Association is the Member. Where do we find them and how do we make these people interested enough to want to become one of us? Before anyone can be successful in selling GWRRA, they must first sit for a moment and determine the reason they joined. Each of us had our own reasons it may have been the emphasis on keeping each other safe when riding, the 'G-rated' family atmosphere of our events or that we know the best places for food and desserts. In most cases the motorcycles brought us together and its the relationships and ideals of GWRRA that keep us together. Let's take a closer look at these ideals: PROMOTE SAFETY - This will help us continue to enjoy our hobby. We can also enjoy the fact that we are doing something to protect others by teaching them safe riding practices. We are saving lives! PROMOTE FRIENDSHIP - Among ALL of the motorcycling public. What better way to enjoy our way of life than to make friends and share with them? PROMOTE THE POSITIVE IMAGE OF THE MOTORCYCLE RIDER - We must always keep our best foot forward. PROMOTE FUN - This is the glue that holds it all together! PROVIDE A MONEY-BACK GUARANTEE - GWRRA will provide a money-back guarantee to any Member that is of the opinion the Association has failed to live up to their expectations. It really does boil down to Friends for fun, safety and knowledge, and we back that up with a money back guarantee! The More You Know, the Better It Gets Jack Wagner
