1 FL2D Sep Newsletter of Harbor City Wings Melbourne, FL Gold Wing Road Riders Association In October, we are participating in a Florida District Ride which will be in Ocala, Fl. The ride is on Saturday morning through horse country, approx. three, one hour segments starting at 8:30 am. We end up at Silver Springs State Park for lunch and other activities. Our plan is to make it a weekender, leaving Melbourne around 10 am on Friday the 5 th and traveling to I-95 and Rt 40 (Ormond Beach). We will have lunch at Cracker Barrel there. Then we will travel to Ocala, and check into a motel. Several of us have made reservations at the Quality Inn 3434 SW College Road, Ocala, FL, US, 34474,1 (352) We will stay through Saturday and leave Sunday morning. 4 Activities Coordinator To trike or not to trike????????? That seems to be the question but it seems the bigger question is: When in the hell did it get to the first question? Doesn't it seem like it was just yesterday when you got your first bike? Now you are faced with the dilemma of to trike or not to trike. TENACIOUS..Mean anything to you? Stubborn, won't give up.ring a bell. Well looking around at all the trikes that are popping up,(some chapters are at 70 to 80 percent trikes) but this only goes to show just how much we are determined to remain active Gold Wingers. There can be a number of reasons one goes to a trike. Bad knees, bad back, joints that refuse to cooperate, any one thing that makes you feel unsafe handling a bike is a good enough reason to convert over. Now think about your co-rider.when mama is happy, every body's happy. The same goes for comfort when mama is comfortable.well it sure makes the ride a lot more pleasant. I also believe that the rider is able to relax a little more and enjoy the view. So even though some may have to convert to a trike, just think of it as not giving up or giving in, but adding a lot more riding years to life. Although I will admit sometimes I do miss the two wheels, then I say to myself "close your eyes and enjoy the freedom of the ride. Whether it be two wheels or three wheel." YAHOO!!!!!!!!!! While you are on those rides remember: Watch out for the guy, behind the guy in front of you.that guy is you and we sure want to keep you around. 5 Rider Education Are you one to watch the news? Do you pay attention to the weather? I am an advocate for watching the weather daily! Pam gets all over me for watching the news every day. It s the same ole thing every day, she says. Well for the most part she is right but, the weather changes very quickly! During a 90 minute news broadcast I have seen it change drastically at times. This is something I want to be aware of! Why?? You may ask. Well, I ride a motorcycle, that s why. Simple as that. No, I don t mind getting wet, I just mind getting dead. Was speaking with a Final Wishes Planner just the other day and he says I have at least 16 + years left so I want to make the best of them all. Florida is a peninsula and we have wind attacking us from three different sides as well as weather conditions. Often there may be rain and or storms on one side of the state and beautiful sunshine on the other and in a very short time the storm has moved in and no more sunshine. If the two weather fronts meet as they cross the state it could cause disastrous effects, especially for a motorcyclist. Keeping a constant vigil on the weather is a must. Again, I say, I m not worried about getting wet. I do worry about LIGHT- NING!! You say, Well I m on rubber tires just like a car. Too bad, so sad., doesn t matter, NO PROTECTION! A car has a METAL BODY surrounding it and true, it is on rubber tires. If it is struck by lightning the metal body generally conducts the electricity to ground, protecting the inhabitants if they are not touching any metal. On a motorcycle, NO PROTECTION! YOU HEAR THUNDER, GET UNDER COVER! I have downloaded the app WeatherBug to my phone and use it religiously. I m not saying it is the best. It is just the one I use. There are a gazillion free weather apps out there that you can download that are very simple to use. Pick one that you like and get familiar with it.
