1 FRIENDS FOR FUN, SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE FEBRUARY 2019 ISSUE 323 GOLDWING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION, REGION A, FLORIDA DISTRICT Hello fellow WINGNUTS! What a great time we had on the First Ride of the Year, 300 folks met for the shrimp buffet and then we gave away $900 in raffle money. What a way to start the New Year. The District/State Rally is coming up soon, so make sure you get registered to attend, We always have a great time seeing all the folks from around Florida and beyond. Monthly Gathering First Thursday of each Month At Golden Corral 582 Blanding Blvd 6:30 pm Eat STAY IN TOUCH! Chapter Director Be sure to keep the Chapter ride calendar on hand to check and see where we are headed next. We are always looking for new places to check out, just let the staff know. Goldwing raffle tickets are still available, you folks have sold over 600 as of January, our goal to is to sell 1500, which gets the chapter charter fee paid for the year. Buy some for your friends & relatives, they might be the lucky $10,000 dollar winner. 2 FL1-X Chapter Team Directors Geno & Kathie Jette Couple of the Year Rena & Marc Oakley Treasurer Jim Louden Goodies Sales Kathie Jette Membership Enhancement Welcome Committee Gary & Terry Hartley Ride Educator Marc Oakley Newsletter Editor Dayle Manes Sunshine Coordinator Dee Louden Ways & Means 50/50 OPen Motorist Awareness Liaison Bob Manes THE SAFETY CORNER Many of our members do not ride motorcycles anymore and all of members that do ride also drive four wheel vehicles. Therefore; I think it might be appropriate to write some general safe driving/riding articles. These articles will be direct quotes from the Drivers Handbook to ensure they are accurate and not just my interpretation. The latest revision of the handbook can be found at You will also find a practice exam on the page. Take it and see how you do. :-) Speed Limits Obeying speed limits improves safety by reducing the probability and severity of crashes. Speed limit signs tell you the maximum safe speed when both weather conditions and visibility are favorable. Speeding is extremely dangerous. The faster you drive, the greater the impact or striking power of your vehicle: When you double the speed of a car, you increase its force of impact four times. When you triple the speed of a car, you increase its force of impact nine times. Speeding is against the law. You must obey the speed limit and you are responsible for knowing the speed limit when you are driving. (The speeding buffer is a myth; you are not allowed to drive up to 10 MPH over the speed limit.) Observe and obey posted speed limit signs. Speeding is the #1 citation written for teens. (Source: DHSMV.) Speed limits show the fastest speed you may drive under ideal conditions. You are responsible for adjusting your driving speed to the weather, roadway, and traffic conditions. For example, during a storm, you should drive slower than the posted speed. The safest speed is the one that allows you to have complete control of your vehicle and avoid collisions. However, driving too slowly is also against Florida law. You must not drive so slowly that you block or delay traffic moving at normal, safe speeds. You should drive with the flow of traffic, within the speed limit. When driving slower than the flow of traffic, keep right so others may safely pass. On highways, when the posted speed limit is 70 MPH, the minimum speed limit is 50 MPH. Speeding has a large effect on stopping distances. We ll talk about stopping next month. This will include, Perception Distance, Reaction Distance, Braking Distance, and Total Stopping Distance. Some of this is really basic but as we get into it you may find somethings you forgot, or somethings that s new or things you never knew. Our purpose here is not to teach, (that s not allowed). Hopefully we can just make you think about safe driving/riding for a couple minutes. If so...we ve been successful. Be Safe out there and have fun!! 4 My, my, my, this winter has brought back some childhood memories. Has it for you? For me it brought back those memories when I would go to the county fair and ride that big ole roller coaster, up, down, around and around. Wow, such fun and so fast. How does this winter remind me of that you ask? Well this weather has been like a roller coaster, the temperature has been up one day and down the next day. Up the next day and down the next day. Wow, what a winter, It can t make up its mind. This morning I get up and it s 35 degrees in my carport. My bike says OH NO YOU DON T! So it s back to a nice warm cuddly, toasty, warm, (did I say warm already?), bed until it warms up a bit! OK, OK, so you know where I m going with this. Most of you northerners don t really mind a day or two of this cooler weather but those of us that have been her for over 60 years have gotten a bit used to the warmer temps. Therefore we must remember to dress appropriately after we brave these frigid temps. You know, for those of us that do live here in God s country 365 and don t invest in heated riding gear, we need to remember to layer our clothing for this Florida sun. Cooler in the morning needs more layers, as the day progresses and warms up we can shed a few garments. As the day wears on the sun nears the horizon the temps drops we can put those garments back on for more warmth and head for that nice warm, cuddly, toasty, warm, (here we go again), well, you get my drift. Not only do we ATGATT, (All The Gear All The Time), but, we need to use common sense when we face the elements even here in sunny Florida. So please Ride Safe, Ride Aware, Rick & Pam Northrop Senior District Educators
5 HARTLEY HAPPENINGS Hello Wingnutts, and welcome to the month of February. Terry and I hope everyone is doing well. We only have about a month and a half before our Florida District Rally is here. Hope to see a number of you join us in Altamonte Springs for the big show. We know the weather has cooled down somewhat and if you don t want to ride the bike, that s ok, come by four wheels and enjoy the friendship. At the January Chapter gathering the following took place: we had visitors from Chapter Y & J. The patch drawing was won by Judy Rutherford. Door prizes were won by: Marc Oakley, Gary Hartley, Chuck Bennett, Geno Jette, Fred Baker, Dotty White, Judy Rutherford, Dayle Manes, Jim Rutherford and Wayne May. The drawing for those who brought door prizes was won by Jeff Cox. The evening s drawings were won by Jeff Cox and Dee Louden. The new 2019 Chapter Couple of the Year was announced and it was Terry and Gary Hartley. The Ride Jar drawing was won by Bob Manes. The bike tickets were won by Wayne May. Since Terry and I, as Membership Enhancement Coordinators, have the responsibility of keeping it fun within the chapter, if there is anything you can think of that would make our gatherings more fun, write down your ideas and send them to us, or give them to Geno and Kathie who will pass them along. We try to have something to do each meeting or a little handout, but we don t want to do the same thing all the time. As you visit other chapter gatherings and you see something interesting, please let us know about it. We ll see what we can do to make our gatherings fun. After all we are the FUN state!!! We will be in and out of town the next three months (as long as the doctors say so) so we ll see you when we see you. Hope everyone is enjoying the Chapter and if there is anything we can do to make your stay more enjoyable, just ask.
