GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION FRIENDS FOR FUN, SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE February 2019 This month s newsletter is dedicated to our members; all of those wonderful people who make the G such a fun place to be! The staff makes the wheels turn, but our members bring the fun. Thank you all for being our G family. Salute! This month we send a big SALUTE to Dennis and Sue Zimmerman as they add yet another former title to their very long GWRRA resume. Dennis and Sue have spent countless hours over the past 12 years serving Chapter G in many volunteer capacities. We thank them whole-heartedly for their endless dedication to our chapter s success.

Page 3 February 2019 Chapter Director s Report We are off to a great start for We had 40 people attend the New Year s Day breakfast at Cracker Barrel in Dry Ridge, a nice turnout to visit Chapter H in Shelbyville on the 4 th, a well-attended gathering on the 8 th and a very nice dinner ride to Pompilio s on the 12 th. As if that weren t enough another group of go-getters from Chapter G attended the Chapter S gathering in Elizabethtown on the 13 th, where they captured the traveling plaque. All that and it isn t even riding season yet! Thank you to everyone who participated in the above events. This is a tremendous way to start off the New Year. Leah and I can t wait to attend some of the many rides and events planned for this year and share the fun times with our fellow G members. Chuck and Judy Norris, our ride coordinators, have been very busy putting together the ride/events calendar and we really do hope you will mark your individual calendars and plan to join us throughout the year. There are some new things planned as well as plans to re-visit some past favorites. There really is something for everyone. Those of you attending the January gathering witnessed Sue Zimmerman officially pass the web site torch to the Norris. On behalf of the entire chapter, I want to thank Sue and her people Dennis (yes I know you are used to hearing Dennis and his people), for all they have done for the chapter since even before Leah and I joined in What an asset they have been to the chapter serving in so many positions through the years. Thank you Dennis and Sue and we look forward to your continued participation with the chapter. Please do yourself a favor and check out the website at where you will not only find the ride/event calendar that I previously mentioned, but also the newsletter, photo gallery, and contact information for the chapter officers and staff. Feel free to contact any of us anytime you have questions or suggestions. We are all here to serve you and want to do whatever we can to enhance your membership enjoyment. February 23 rd is the District Operations meeting in Shelbyville. This event is open to anyone interested in learning what goes on behind the scenes. We normally meet for breakfast and car pool from there, or you can meet us at the restaurant, or meet us in Shelbyville. We will put out more detailed information at the February gathering. We hope to see you all at the gathering. Rick and Leah Cridlin KY District / Chapter G Team Directors

Page 4 February 2019 Rider Education How to Avoid an Accident on a Motorcycle Many people enjoy the freedom and adrenaline rush that riding a motorcycle can give you. However, riding a motorcycle is very dangerous if you re unprepared. First, take a motorcycle safety course in your area to learn how to ride safely. Next, always be aware of the road conditions and dodge any obstructions. Avoid common driving mistakes by paying attention to the cars around you. Finally, ride safely by wearing safety gear and maintaining your motorcycle 1 Complete a motorcycle safety course. No matter your skill level, you can benefit from taking a safety course. These courses teach you how to avoid accidents, how to crash safely, and how to deal with the aftermath. Many countries have motorcycle safety organizations or government agencies that offer safety courses. Do an online search to find one in your area. For example, the Motorcyclist Safety Foundation offers beginner and advanced courses all over US. In England, the government offers Enhanced Riding Schemes, or courses that are designed to improve a rider s safety 2 Behave as if no car can see you. Many drivers have trouble spotting motorcycles on the road, whether because of a blind spot or because they re not paying attention. Whenever you re driving near a car, assume that the rider cannot see you For example: Stay away from potential blind spots by riding in front of or behind a car. When a car is backing up, assume they won t see you in time to stop. Let them finish and then continue on your way. If a car is merging into your lane, give them space. If they can t see you they will run you over. 3 Pay attention to the wheels of other cars. If you re not sure where a car will turn, look at their wheels. The angle of the wheel will indicate where they want to go next This information can help you avoid many accidents. For example: You will be aware of cars trying to turn left on top of you. A rider can see whether a driver will try to change lanes at an intersection. If the car is backing up, you will know what direction they will most likely go. 4 Watch out for any obstructions in the road. This can include cars, rocks, and other debris. By being watchful, you will give yourself enough time to avoid anything that you see on the road. For example, if you re riding on a small country road, keep an eye out for any cars parked in your lane. Other dangerous road debris includes: Patches of gravel Puddles of water Oil on the road Large branches on the street 5 Check your mirrors often. Be aware of what s going on behind you by checking your mirrors. It can be tempting to keep the eye on the road in front of you at all times. However, you can benefit from knowing what s going on behind you. For example: If a car is speeding, they may come up behind you quickly and startle you. A car behind you may turn on their blinker, indicating that they may merge on top of you if you don t pay attention. **Information acquired from Keep safe! Bill and Sue Mucha KY District Educators

Luanne Williams, KY District/ Chapter Treasurer Membership Enhancement Report Let s everyone hang in there January is behind us and let s get through February. We always look forward to March because it means spring is right around the corner. When our winter is over it will be time to get our trikes/motorcycles ready for riding and spreading the news about our great Chapter G and GWRRA! As a reminder, please check your membership cards for expiration dates to ensure that your membership is current. Please contact us if any of your contact information has changed. If you have any questions, changes, or need assistance, please don t hesitate to contact us. Our Chapter G Membership Enhancement Address is: mec@chapterg.org. Jerry & Luanne Williams KY District / Chapter G Membership Enhancement Program Coordinators Pins & Patches The snowy, rainy weather will be with us for a while longer; plenty of time to get your bike/trike ready for the upcoming riding season. Speaking of getting ready; do you, or your partner, need a new shirt to wear? We can sell you a quality product at our cost! Give me a shout if you'd like something new... I hope you all saw Rick Artmayer's article in the current issue of Wing World; hearing protection is something I mention every month - once it's gone, it's really gone... please wear something this coming year. There are some good District Rallies coming up; hope to see you at some of them! Be well and do good things- John Keiter, Pins & Patches

Page 6 February 2019 Technical Educator Report Accessories that a motorcyclist attaches to his motorcycle often reflect the owner s interests and concerns. One such accessory is a flag. There are many different flags, and there is accepted protocol on how they should be displayed. In the United States of America, conventional direction on the issue says when the American Flag is flown alone; it can either be located at the center on the rear of the motorcycle, or on what s known as the marching right. That is the right side of the motorcycle from the rider s view when properly mounted to operate the motorcycle and facing forward (throttle side). If the American Flag is flown with another single flag, it should only be flown to its marching right. This means displaying the flag with no others to its right. If displayed with multiple flags, the American Flag should be centered and highest. There are specific protocols for the placement of more than three flags displayed and flown on a motorcycle flags of countries flown higher than flags of states, state flags flown higher than novelty flags. Many motorcyclists fly three flags or less. If you re carrying more than three, look it up. Unconventionally, there is a school of thought to fly the American flag on the left rear of the motorcycle (clutch side). The thinking is because the flags are normally so small and are not visible from the front as we ride, marching right does not apply. The orientation of the flags own right should be considered therefore flying the flag on the left rear. One article on the Internet was against this placement because it would put the American flag lower than any other flag when the motorcycle is parked on its side stand. Rick & Kim Artmayer KY District / Chapter Technical Educators Hot Chocolate is like a hug from the inside!

Page 7 February 2019 Rewards No, that is not a mistake; the subject is rewards versus awards. As we all know, the motto of GWRRA is Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge. During the past year we had 81 opportunities to participate with Chapter G. Events as short as an Ice Cream Ride to a longer weekend trip to Frankenmuth or the Flight 93 Memorial. Many also enjoyed the extended GWWRA family with a trip to Cave City for the Kentucky Blast or Knoxville for Wing Ding. Steve Centner, Paul Hartke and Chuck Norris led us on some scenic rides around Northern Kentucky on the Ice Cream Rides. They were fun even when the Dairy Queen closed early because of a shortage of workers. The lesson we learned was to have a backup plan, like the McDonalds down the road. The weekend trips were an opportunity to see what great leaders and planners we have. While I did not go to Frankenmuth, I heard only good things about it. I can attest to the skills of the Artmayer s. The trip to Pennsylvania was outstanding. Both Rick and Kim taught us by example how to plan and safely execute an excursion. Chuck and Judy Norris with advice from Rick and Leah Cridlin, have taken the ideas that were suggested at the Planning Meeting and prepared a schedule of events for the year. The reward of Fun, Safety and Knowledge awaits those who get involved. Will you be one of those? By the way, it is not too early to send me your beginning odometer reading if you did not send me your ending reading for Gary, Darlene & Raven Heil, Awards Wintertime Tips to Protect your Wing Keep your fuel stable - Add fuel stabilizer to keep your fuel from becoming thick and corrosive. Change your oil filter Used oil can contain contaminates and condensation which can cause corrosion. Replenish your coolant Use a fresh supply of low-temperature coolant to prevent freezing. Care for your battery - Use a battery tender to keep your battery voltage up and prevent freezing. Protect and preserve Remove all the dirt and bug carnage and apply surface protection. Keep it covered cover your bike to keep it free of dust, moisture, pets and people.

Page 9 February 2019 Tips for Staying Warm The cold part of winter has arrived my Winger Pals; even in Texas. And although it s not quite as cold here as it is there, a certain amount of warmth is needed everywhere just to stay comfortable. With this month s theme, Cold Hands, Warm Heart, I thought I would offer up a few ways to stay warm through these dreary months. Group hug! Wrap up! Snuggle! Bundle up! Stay inside! Donita Nardi, Newsletter Editor Ride Coordinator Report We coldly go where no man has gone before, February The month has been very cold and snowy. Some members have departed the cold for warmer climates. Sadly we were not among those escapees. January 1, 2019 started our first Chapter event; The Polar Bear ride with breakfast at Cracker Barrel in Dry Ridge where the event was attended by 40 members. We actually had a few riders. On the 4 th we had a chapter visit to Shelbyville to try to capture the plaque. The 8 th was the Chapter meeting with a good turnout and the opportunity to sign up for the Dinner Ride and sign up for a few events that we hope to get scheduled for the summer. The 12 th we met at Pompillios with 18 members for another fine dinner with friends and great conversation. We had bad weather but most everyone managed to make it. Saturday the 13 th our COY and several others made it to Elizabethtown where they captured the plaque. Judy and I continue to work on the 2019 Calendar. Don t forget February s meeting on the 12 th and dinner ride on the 16 th at Greyhound Tavern 2500 Dixie Hwy Ft Mitchell- Reservation at 5 pm. Don t forget, everyone is invited to attend the District OPS meeting on the 23rd at Shelbyville First Christian Church, 1000 Eminence Pike 8:30 am. Depart 7am. As ride coordinators we are always open to having others lead the ice cream rides and rides to dinner locations and other rides. We are always open to routes that maybe you have traveled before and enjoyed. Just let me know in advance and we can set you up as the lead. If you don t want to lead just make sure you get me a good route map and I can be prepared to lead. Chuck & Judy Norris, Ride Coordinators

Page 11 February 2019 Hysterical Historical Highlights Congratulations to our members who are celebrating February Chapter G anniversaries! Well the month is February the year is 2019 could that possibly be right? When we were kids years crawled along, but now it seems they ve taken flight. Back then we loved the snow deeper the better for sled rides and snowball wars, When our moms dressed us up like puffy turtles then sent us to the great outdoors! We played we rolled we frolicked and tumbled and made a snow angel or two, Until our moms demanded we come back inside before we started turning blue! But now we re adults we ve matured and, of course, we re wiser and the like, So on winter days we simply stay inside and whine, I want to ride my bike!!! But while inside, let s be productive and thank those who ve kept the G family strong, Like the Hanlin s in 89 and one year later Ray and sweet Kathy Conrad came along. Then in 92 we were joined by Paul and Jackie Hartke then by Mark Niesche in 2001, So as you can see the G s always acquired members who are truly second to none! In 03, Jack and I joined as biking, camping, and priceless friends entered our lives, So in lieu of our heated and air-conditioned car on our Goldwing we tried to survive. We traded sleeping in our secure home for being protected by a zipper on a canvas flap, And accepted the fact that spending a fortune to live like we re poor is truly where it s at! Then two years later the Otto s arrived both Arlene and her man, Rick, And in 2017 we happily gained the Reilly s both Tom and Janice, his biker chick! Now there s still one special G February couple that I have yet to mention, And that s because both Windy and Joyce Quire deserve some undivided attention! For their 58 th wedding anniversary this past December, Windy gave Joyce a unique gift, That had special words engraved on the back which gave her spirit a lift. The words simply read, I loved you then, I love you still, I always have, I always will. Of course, reading these sweet words from the love of her life gave Joyce s heart a thrill. Joyce said her and Windy practically raised each other they ve been together so long, So if there is something she doesn t do right it s Windy s fault for teaching her wrong! But there s one quality of Windy s that even his endless back pain is not able to defeat, That s the fact that even though in pain Windy brings laughter to everyone they meet! Now his long-awaited back surgery was scheduled today, same as this meeting of the G, And February 15 th will be his second surgery so Joyce has a request for you and me. She s simply asked that we take time to remember her Windy and lift him up in prayer, For knowing precious friends are lifting-up the love of her life will make this easier to bear.
