Please help support our Rider training and safety by buying tickets and participating in the chapter raffles. Also speaking of Rider Ed, if anyone in our chapter (or any chapter receiving this newsletter) needs an ERC please let me know at marcrenaoakley@gmail.com or text If we have enough people interested I will contact Rick and try to get one scheduled. As of this writing, no ERC, TRC or MFA courses are scheduled. Something to Think About If you do not participate in GWRRA Levels program it s OK but at least take a rider course every few years or practice occasionally in a parking lot. Studies have found that many Motorcycle riders in accidents showed significant problems with collision avoidance. Most riders would over brake and skid the rear wheel, and under brake the front wheel greatly reducing their ability to slow down before colliding with an object. The ability to counter steer and swerve was essentially non-existent. A typical motorcycle accident allows less than 2 seconds to complete all collision avoidance actions. Also, while looking around on line the other day I came across this site: Motorcycle Tips & Techniques This site contains many articles and videos concerning motorcycle safety. It is well worth the time to look around and watch some of the videos. 4 HARTLEY HAPPENINGS Hello Wingnutts, and welcome to the month of June. Terry and I hope everyone is doing well. Try and take advantage of as many events scheduled on our ride calendar as possible, and get in some extra riding if you can. We always have fun and you re welcome to join in. Attend other various GWRRA events if you can. See you on the road. First, we hope everyone had a great past couple of months. As you may have noticed, Terry and I were absent from the past two monthly gatherings. April we were on an RV trip and May we were on a cruise with 11 family members and 7 friends (18 total). We had a wonderful time and will tell you all about it if you ask. We hope all Mothers out there had a wonderful Mother s Day. Father s Day is this month, so if you have a father still around, please take an opportunity to wish him a very happy Father s Day. At the May Chapter gathering the following took place: we had visitors from Chapter J, Door prizes were won by: Fred Baker, Sweet Harold, Ralph Mathis and Ron Martin. Thank you all who brought door prizes. The evening s drawings were won by Gail Baker and Jeff Cox. The Ride Jar drawing was rolled over as Mike Randall was not present. Don t forget to visit either our website or the District website to download a copy of the new Visitation form for this year. Make a few copies and put them in your bike, car or other mode of transportation. When you re out and about, visiting a chapter or other event in the area, please fill one of these out and give it to either Terry or me, and we will ensure that they are accounted for. We need everyone to help with visitation so we can show other chapters that we are a riding and visiting chapter. Remember, you must have at least three people in your group to count for visitation. The chapter with the most visitation points each year wins $100! Our GWRRA events, from the Chapter level all the way up to Wing Ding, are designed to provide everyone with FUN opportunities that include exciting rides, social gatherings and educational opportunities. And that feeling of family, of belonging, of more opportunities to have FUN; that is what the Membership Enhancement Program is all about! Our goals for the Membership Enhancement Program are to: Participate with District, and Chapter directors to assist in creating the FUN portion of GWRRA events Ensure that we stay in touch with our current members and have our MEP representatives at every level take the time to really get to know our GWRRA family members better; the better we know one another, the more FUN we can have! Contact new and prospective members to give them information about GWRRA and encourage them to have FUN with us Track successful FUN ideas and share them with MEP staff at every level of the organization Provide information to GWRRA leadership to assist them in planning and making informed decisions about GWRRA direction Congratulations to the following members on their GWRRA anniversaries: Joyce Harris 06/2017 As always, ride safe and remember (ATGATT) All the Gear All the Time! Gary & Terry Hartley, Membership Enhancement Coordinators

5 ...The Lighter side... Sent an article in to Wing World several months ago and to my surprise it was published on page 16 in the May issue... WOW... what a shocker. The article was about Dayle & Bobs motorcycles from the beginning of when we got hooked on "Honda" motorcycles in The article talked about our 1st Gold Wing, a 75 fully dressed black GL1000 model with all the bells and whistles up to our 06' black Wing. I didn't know at the time I wrote the article but, would soon lay claim to a 40th Anniversary Edition 40 years later...a "true 40th." On Wednesday, 3/28 after attempting to make a deal on a new or used motorcycle in Jacksonville, Sanford, Deland and Russellville, I called Chattanooga Honda and they had just traded in exactly what I was looking for. After back and forth phone negotiations for several hours between me, the salesman and the sales manager exchanging photos and prices of my bike and theirs, we finally agreed to a final out the door price and will pick it up on Saturday morning 3/31. The following day was Thursday and Geno spent about 12 hours removing parts & extras from my 06' Gold Wing. We loaded up the bike the next day (Friday) & headed north for Tennessee early Saturday morning at 2AM with my motorcycle in tow. Our plan was to take I-75 straight up the gut thru Atlanta to save about 30+ miles of by-pass. The plan worked as we came thru Atlanta at 7am while traffic was light. We arrived at the Chattanooga Honda Dealer at 9:15am. The 2015 Red & Black Honda on the showroom floor was all polished up and exactly as described by the dealer so, without further ado, we put the deal together as we had discussed earlier by phone. It so happened where some of the local Gold Wing riders came by the Honda dealership with one of their buddies, a local Harley rider as I was making the deal. The 60+ yr old Harley rider came over to take a look at my black 06' Honda Gold Wing trade-in and wanted to know all about it. After I made the trade and Geno & I started loading my new bike onto the trailer, come to find out the Harley rider had just swapped in his Harley on my 06' black Gold Wing...WOW...Was that a quick deal or what? I bet that was the fastest sale ever. This man rode off into the sun on his new 06' black Honda Gold Wing with his buddies in tow as Geno & I were leaving the dealership about high noon. This dealership "Southern Honda Powersports" is the largest Honda dealer in the country. From the time we arrived until the time we headed southbound, they were jumpin' with customers. My salesman Caleb, had already sold 29 motorcycles in the month of March and this one being his 30th sale, while the dealership as a whole had already delivered 18 or 20 brand new 2018 Honda Gold Wings, selling them upon arrival. If they could have gotten 100 more of the new wings from Honda, they would have sold them as they unloaded them. Geno & I took turns driving and making it possible for us to make this 1000 mile trip up & back in a little over 17 hours along with the help of some awesome, "Genos home made, "JIF peanut butter & grape jelly sandwiches" & about 10 snack bags of chips". Talking about cutting some zzzzzzzz while being chauffeured...you bet cha... we both did... Thank You all For Being A Part Of "The Fun Of our Lives". Stay Focused, Stay Aware and Be Safe, Bob & Dayle Motorist Awareness Coordinators

6 With the summer quickly upon us and many of our northern members back north I came across an excellent historical article pertaining to the history of the Rider Ed Program by my dear friend and mentor, Chuck Reed. Chuck was my former Region A Educator. (Delete this part: This is a long article and you may certainely break it up into three three monthly sections/parts. This should carry you through August.) History of GWRRA's Rider Education Program Part 1. The Gold Wing Road Riders Association has been teaching and promoting motorcycle safety from its founding on June 4, The earliest newsletters of the small group that met monthly at a local restaurant and coffee shop in Phoenix Arizona featured guest speakers on safety topics including a motorcycle policeman. When the original charter for GWRRA was established, the only motorcycle organization endorsed by GWRRA was the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) for its efforts in making family motorcycling a safer, more enjoyable pastime. The first "Safety Director" for that first group of GWRRA members (as listed in the April 1978 issue of "Wing News"), was Gary Gardner. By December, Dave Van de Water had taken over as "Safety Information Officer." (Dave's contributions to GWRRA's earliest history were many, including the development of the first GWRRA logo by one of his company's graphic artists.) In the July 1979 issue of "Wing News" the name of another Phoenix native, Avery Poling, was listed as "Safety Information Officer." Poling held the position on or close to a year. As the scope and growth of GWRRA grew to national, and then international, proportions, new visions of the potential for GWRRA's Rider Education Program came from Frank Germo (then of Virginia Beach, VA), appointed GWRRA's first "National Safety Officer" in Germo had visions of placing at least one MSF Chief Instructor in each GWRRA Region and at least one MSF Certified Instructor in each state having GWRRA membership. He also set out to "keep the Membership safety-aware and evaluate motorcycle items with regards to safety," tasks he did through his regular article contributions to "Wing News." Germo went on to become the Virginia District Director and Region A Director while continuing to promote Rider Education at every turn in his GWRRA career. Germo's most lasting legacy is the vision of a wide-spread network of Rider Educators throughout GWRRA, a vision which has become reality today. In September 1982, Jim Cole was listed in "Wing News" as "Safety Editor." Cole, who also was Region C Director, was named National Safety Director in January Cole instituted GWRRA's first Safe Miles Program, whereby Gold Wingers would update their files for each consecutive 5000 miles of accident-free riding, earning a pin. A month later, Cole added "Pilot" and "Copilot" rockers to the program, giving the first visible recognition to the safety role played by the Co-Rider. Jim Cole continued to promote Rider Education through October 1986, with regular article contributions through "Wing News" and its successor, Wing World Magazine. GWRRA can thank Jim Cole for the earliest concept of its Rider Education Program, one in which a Rider and a Co-Rider can proudly wear pins and patches signifying their safe motorcycle mileage.
