3 By the time you read this newsletter, the Missouri District Rally at Branson will be over with so I hope everybody had a good time at Branson. We have a summer full of riding and activities planned for Chapter Z. In June we have a ride going to the Carlyle Lake area in Illinois, and we are going to do an overnight ride to Chapter B in Springfield Mo. There, we will join Chapter B on their 3rd annual Bee Run. Watch for one or two impromptu rides this month, and more rides in the months following. We would like to mention the August Ride for Kids, a charity ride to benefit the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. This is a ride that is very dear to the Goldwingers hearts and we will be out there showing our support. We hope you plan to attend. John & Cindy Ruegge Chapter Z Directors Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge 3

4 Well the weather has finally cooperated with our plans for riding the wings!!!!! In May we started off with our MAD Event, a windshield wash at FastLane Phillips, we had 20 members present and did our best to ask those in the cars to watch out for us!!!! On Sunday May 15th, 35 Chapter Z members attended Niehaus Customer Appreciation Days and many of us enjoyed the fried chicken dinner at Prairie Town, Illinois. John Ruegge led an impromptu ride to Onondaga State Park and had 17 riders including a new couple who plan to join Chapter Z!!!!! During that same weekend Tom Braun, Paul and I traveled to Rockville, Indiana for the Indiana District Rally. We went on a guided ride to 11 of the 31 Covered Bridges in Parke County, made new friends and we kicked butt in the pedal tractor pull!!!! On May 28th we have a great mystery ride planned!!!! 5 REDUCING THE RISK Mike and Barb Bayuk Chapter Z Rider Educators New Motorcycle Helmet Coming to a Dealer Near You Soon? As a Chapter Educator I have always supported all the gear all the time. One important part of the gear has always been the motorcycle helmet. As a Medic First Aid Instructor the question always asked is, what if a person is down and needs CPR? Do we remove the helmet or not? As always, the current helmets available should NOT be removed in the field to prevent any further potential cervical injuries. HOWEVER, an Australian helmet manufacture has come up with an innovative helmet design that could change that mode of thinking. Availability in the USA market has not been announced at the current time. However, check this new innovative helmet out! Unlike conventional helmets, the Voztec Snakehead helmet has no retaining strap; instead the helmet is hinged at the top and swings open like a clam shell. You open the hinge, lift the rear section of the helmet, and insert your face into the front part of the helmet, then close and lock the rear portion. This can be done without having to take your glasses off. According to Mark Bryant, president, the innovative design affords several advantages over the conventional helmet, including head retention, comfort, vision, turbulence, wind pressure and, most importantly, safety. In the event of an accident, the front portion of the helmet can be removed, leaving the rear portion in place without disturbing the head -- unlike conventional helmets where the strap needs to be cut or released and the helmet removed from the top of the head. This feature alone may reduce the number of injuries encountered when the conventional helmet is removed, according to the company. Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge 5

6 The close fit of the helmet combined with its streamlining not only reduces turbulence but aids in directional visor stability, as the close fit allows for no slack when the head is turned. The helmet and head turn as if locked together. The lower edge of the helmet is rounded, providing a smoother surface in the event of an accident that causes the head to scrape along the pavement, reducing the chances of the helmet catching on something and jerking the head around. The rounded surface tucks underneath the jaw and behind the neck, clamping the helmet firmly and comfortably to the head and literally eliminating the possibility of the helmet coming adrift. Construction is Tri-Composite, consisting of carbon fiber, Kevlar and fiberglass, with a multiple density foam liner. The adjustable chin cup adds to the helmet s comfort and is a simple fit it and forget it process once the initial adjustment is accomplished. The name, Snakewind, is derived from the helmet s snake-like profile, with its large flat, forward facing intake vents, matching the skull of a snake. The helmets being shown are prototypes and the plan is to have the helmets available for sale in Australia. There will be three models available with price points of $300, $500 and $800. RIDE OFTEN, RIDE HARD, BUT MOST OF ALL RIDE SMART! Mike & Barb Bayuk Chapter Z Rider Educators Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge 6

7 Our Motto... Share the Road! Our Mission To Facilitate A Reduction In Motorcycle Crashes With Other Motor Vehicles. Branson rally is coming soon and we will be dusting off our trailers and packing up for a great time. HERE ARE A FEW TRAILERING TIPS 1) FILL YOUR TIRES - The trailer puts additional load on both bike tires, especially the rear. Inflate them properly on the upper end of your bike s GVWR. 2) HITCH IT RIGHT - Your bike needs to lean into turns, but the trailer doesn't lean. You'll need a hitch that lets the trailer both turn and swivel, think about how a U-joint works. 3) FIND YOUR SPACE - Trailers are almost always wider than the bike, you'll need to ride closer to the center of the lane than you would without a trailer. This also puts you closer to the center-of-the-lane oil slick you'll find on most roads, so exercise caution. 4) STOP THAT THING - Trailers increase a bikes weight and stopping distance. They also want to overrun the bike when stopping unless equipped with their own separate trailer brakes. Ride with caution, brake early and allow yourself plenty of stopping room. 5) FIND PARKING - Your bike and trailer rig is much longer than a bike alone, so you need to scout out an appropriate parking spot. Look for one you can pull straight out when leaving. Bikes are agile; towing trailers, not so much. Have a great trip, ride smart and safe friends. 10 It has come to my attention from several people that the MSF has changed their rules to take the ERC. If you have a car tire on your bike you will not be allowed to take the course. I m sorry but to me that is wrong. What difference does it make what kind of tire you have on your bike? As long as you feel safe running that tire, you should be able to run any tire you want. After all it is your bike. The last five years that I rode two wheels I ran a car tire on my bike. While I do not recommend any one put a car tire on their bike, it is what I wanted and I felt safe doing so. It took a few tries before I found the right tire, but after I did I got great traction on wet or dry pavement, and I got about thirty thousand miles on one tire. I also ran a rear bike tire on the front of my bike. Again I am not recommending car tires to anyone, it s a personal choice. I m afraid that people who run car tires will not take the ERC, and the levels program will lose more people. We are not going to change our choice of tires just to take a class. I also heard that if you use a half helmet you cannot take the class. Most of the half helmets are DOT approved and should be allowed, however my personal choice is a full face. In closing I just want to say that even though I ride a trike I will not take any riding course as long as these rules stay in effect. I know that one guy not taking their course is not going to change anything, but there is a point when big brother goes too far in telling us what we can and can t do. Again I do not recommend a car tire to anyone but for those who do ride with one, I say stick to your guns and enjoy the ride.
