2 Wings of Wesley Chapel (FL1-L2) 2 Wow what a FUNfilled month we had in January! As always, the Chapter calendar was packed with a variety of events. We must thank everyone for all the great ideas that are coming in. Please, keep them coming! The New Year s Day ride was once again a great success. We started the day with a trip to Rooster s in Brooksville. While there, Chapter FL1-T (Inverness) showed up. Between the two Chapters, we took up over half of the restaurant. We want to give a shout out to Rooster s for accommodating us. We have been going there for years on the 1 st and they have always welcomed us with open arms. With all our bellies full and satisfied, we headed out on a beautiful ride through back roads. Thank you, Rick Buck, for another great route on the annual ride. We also visited the Seaside Seabird Sanctuary where, we were able to see some of the great work they do to rehab injured seabirds. Our ride to Monkey Island unfortunately did not go as planned. When we pulled up, we realized they are closed for remodeling. Once of these days the two of us will get there! On the ride in, we all noticed another restaurant not far from there, so we decided to give it a try and were all pleased with the food. The Wednesday Hump Day Rides have been a big hit with those who are retired or have a day off from work. Thank you to Jeff Duffey, Don Hicks, Donny Peters, Rick Meredith and Cheech for taking turns putting these rides together. Thank you, Jan Hicks, for putting together the Motorist Awareness event at the New River Church Antique Car Show. Although it was a cold and blustery day, we had a good turnout. We had the opportunity to reach out to a couple hundred people, reminding them that motorcycles are everywhere and to please lookout for them. One of the great things about this Chapter is how generous everyone is, especially when it comes to donating to the Veterans. Fred & Carol Bley organized with the Baldomero Lopez Memorial Veteran s Nursing Home to drop off all the donations from the Chapter. They were overjoyed with all the donations, especially with the Fidget Aprons that were handmade. Those that went had the opportunity to visit with some of the Veterans, tour the facility and have lunch. Thank you to all who took time out of your day to participate and bring a smile to some of the Veteran s faces. The weekend of the 12 th and 13 th, several of us attended the Chapter Conference in Altamonte Springs. The conference gives the District Team the opportunity to discuss the business side of GWRRA. During the conference, the District Team also throws in some FUN games to show how easy it is to get people involved. One of the great things about attending the conference is sharing ideas and suggestions and even hearing about some of the struggles some may be having. It also gives us all the sense that we love this association and want to do our best to continue to see it grow. We want to thank Bill & Cheryl Smith, FL District Directors, along with the whole District Team for a FUN and outstanding weekend. incoming and newly appointed Senior Officers are announced and presented with their certificates and new patches. The Senior Officer Program was designed to recognize and honor outstanding Officers who have distinguished themselves through performance and dedication above their peers. These Officers when compared to their peers, are considered above average and excel in the execution of their position expectations. We are proud to announce and congratulate Donny & Aimee Peters for their appointment to Senior Chapter Membership Enhancement Coordinators and Judy Murphy & Matt Forman for their appointment to Senior Chapter Treasurers. Along with them, the two of us were appointed to Senior Chapter Directors. We were all surprised and are honored to be given this award. The FL District Rally is fast approaching so we are gearing up for a FUNtastic time. At the February Gathering, we will discuss our dinner in the hospitality room before Closing Ceremonies, work assignments, the skit and competitions. If you have not yet registered, please do so before March 1 st to save yourself $5.00 per person. Also, if you have not yet booked your room at the Hilton in Altamonte Springs, we recommend you do so soon. Rooms are filling up quickly and we don t want anyone to miss out. Until Next Month Be Safe Out There! Madalena & Rick Buck Senior Chapter Directors An exciting time during the conference is when the Madalena s New Ride
3 Wings of Wesley Chapel (FL1-L2) 3 Calling all the men in our Chapter, This is directed to you and will be short & sweet! Don t ask your girl what she wants for Valentine s Day. If you can t come up with something unique then here is a suggestion to make it a special one for your girl! Start off by drawing a on the bathroom mirror. Give her flowers, choose a card from the heart or a funny one. Take her to a nice dinner with dessert then take her to a movie. Also, you better be opening that door for her too! Show her you CARE!! Until next month Lisa Duffey Assistant Chapter Director Hello Chapter, During our last few rides, we have noticed a FUN Buzz in the atmosphere surrounding the Wings of Wesley Chapel. Everyone seems to be talking about and planning for their travels this summer. We have Chapter participants planning trips as far as Nova Scotia, Canada and California. We even heard some talk of Alaska. As your Membership Enhancement Coordinators, we would like everyone to remember that travel offers a great opportunity to facilitate a little recruitment and retention for our fantastic motorcycle organization. Always carry a few GWRRA brochures on your bike for those folks that may be interested in belonging to a group that is based on Motorcycles, Friends, Fun, Safety and Knowledge. National Park, Mount St. Helens and Mount Hood, just to name a few! Jeff & Lisa Duffey are in on this adventure and the ride is open to any other Chapter participants who would like to join. The route was planned by Aimee who has worked on it for over a year on and off trying to get it just right! Ride Safe and have FUN, Donny & Aimee Peters Senior Membership Enhancement Coordinators We are also planning a trip this summer to the California Pacific Coast Highway. A 36-day motorcycle adventure starting in Florida and going through Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, California, Oregon and Washington. We will be keeping our daily riding under 300 miles so we can enjoy all the highlights along the way. Such as the Grand Canyon Skywalk, Hoover Dam, Yosemite National Park, the Giant Forest of Sequoias, Golden Gate Bridge, Drive-Thru Tree Park, Olympic
4 Wings of Wesley Chapel (FL1-L2) 4 A big thanks to all the participants who came out to support the Motorist Awareness event at the car show at New River Church on Sunday, January 20th. It was cold; it was windy (about 80 miles an hour, I think); it was spitting rain. In a word, it was MISERABLE! 9 people rode their bikes with another 7 people attending in cars to go along with the other 250 people that attended the event. We put the bright orange Watch Out For Motorcycles stickers on our jackets and wandered around the Car Show. in addition to handing out written information and magnetic bumper stickers. Thank you all for your efforts. This Article was taken from BORN TO RIDE magazine June 2017 RIDING POSTURE Maintaining good posture in the saddle is an important component of good riding. Not only will paying attention to your posture help you stay comfortable over long distances, it will also enhance your control of the motorcycle by helping your body stay relaxed. Sit on the motorcycle in an upright position with your back straight, your head up, and your eyes focused on the roadway ahead. Ride with your knees and elbows turned slightly inward. They should be comfortably bent (not locked) so you can quickly move or respond to changes in riding conditions. Keep both feet on the footrests at all times so you can quickly position them to operate the rear brake pedal or shift lever. Grip both handgrips firmly with your wrists turned downward and knuckles pointed up. Make a conscious effort to keep your body limber and relaxed. Tensed muscles will cause you to fatigue quickly and will lessen your ability to respond promptly to any obstacles that might appear in your path. A relaxed rider is a ready rider. The better your skills are, the more relaxed you ll be. A wrist -down position on the throttle hand is recommended. It will help avoid overrevving the engine and will make it easier to reach for the front brake lever when it comes time to slow down. In a slow, tight turn, such as turning around in a parking lot, it helps to counterweight by leaning in the opposite direction of the motorcycle and direction of the turn. Put pressure on the outside footrest. NOTE FROM JAN: Some of the articles I submit would not be classified as Motorist Awareness articles. It is my hope that by offering riding tips to our Chapter riders. The hope is the information will help you become better riders, be more alert to your surroundings, assist motorists to become aware of our existence, and not to become an accident statistic. 5 Wings of Wesley Chapel (FL1-L2) 5 As I sit here at the computer, early on a Sunday morning listening to the rain coming down, motorcycle hydroplaning popped in my head. The odds are most, if not all, of you have experienced the effects of hydroplaning. I know I have experienced it on my Gold Wing and started thinking about Madalena s new Can Am that has not been out yet while it is raining. It is all about educating ones self before you feel the impact of hydroplaning. After doing some reading I found the below article on ( hydroplaning and thought I would share. Hydroplaning Issues Too many people believe that the shape and size of the tires on their motorcycle will prevent them from hydroplaning. This is a dangerous misconception. This truth is that just like any other vehicle, hydroplaning on a motorcycle is a very real possibility. In fact, due to the vulnerability of the rider, hydroplaning on a motorcycle can have some disastrous results. What Causes a Motorcycle to Hydroplane? When a bike encounters a wet surface, the shape and tread of the tires are designed to channel water away. This ensures that the tires maintain contact with the surface of the road. However, when a bike is traveling at increased speed, this channeling process becomes less effective. The bike then becomes more susceptible to losing traction, and the chances of hydroplaning increases. Preventing Hydroplaning Motorcycle safety is all about educating yourself. To decrease your chances of hydroplaning and lessen the possibility of a motorcycle accident, keep the following safety tips in mind: Proper PSI: In terms of hydroplaning, tire pressure is a critical component. When tires are properly inflated, they are less likely to lose contact with the road at higher speeds. Speed: Hydroplaning is more likely to occur at higher speeds. For example, you are more likely to hydroplane when traveling a 60 mph as opposed to 40 mph. When riding on wet road conditions, keep your motorcycle at a moderately comfortable speed. Braking and Turning: Your goal is to maintain as much tire contact with the road at all times. When the road is wet, avoid making sudden movements when braking or turning. Instead, every move you make should be slow and deliberate. Standing Water: The more water on the roadway, the greater the chances of hydroplaning. Avoid areas of high standing water. If the area is too large to avoid, slow down as you travel through. Losing Control: If you do find yourself hydroplaning, do not panic and hit the brakes or steer wildly. This will only cause you to lose control of your motorcycle. Instead, simply take your foot off the accelerator and continue to drive in a straight-line. In the end, the best advice is to use caution. By keeping the above motorcycle safety tips in mind, you can increase both the overall safety and satisfaction of your ride. Rick Buck Newsletter Editor My, my, my, this winter has brought back some childhood memories. Has it for you? For me it brought back those memories when I would go to the county fair and ride that big ole roller coaster, up, down, around and around. Wow, such fun and so fast. How does this winter remind me of that you ask? Well this weather has been like a roller coaster; the temperature has been up one day and down the next day. Up the next day and down the next day. Wow, what a winter, it can t make up its mind. This morning I get up and it s 35 degrees in my carport. My bike says, OH NO YOU DON T! So, it s back to a nice, warm, cuddly, toasty, warm, (did I say warm already?), bed until it warms up a bit! OK, OK, so you know where I m going with this. Most of you northerners don t really mind a day or two of this cooler weather but those of us that have been here for over 60 years have gotten a bit used to the warmer temps. Therefore, we must remember to dress appropriately after we brave these frigid temps. You know, for those of us that do live here in God s country 365 and don t invest in heated riding gear, we need to remember to layer our clothing for this Florida sun. Cooler in the morning needs more layers, as the day progresses and warms up, we can shed a few garments. As the day wears on the sun nears the horizon the temps drops, we can put those garments back on for more warmth and head for that nice warm, cuddly, toasty, warm, (here we go again), well, you get my drift. Not only do we ATGATT, (All The Gear All The Time), but, we need to use common sense when we face the elements even here in sunny Florida. So please Ride Safe, Ride Aware, Rick & Pam Northrop Senior District Educators
