Stamp book sales are going well so far but we can always use more places. Doesn't necessarily have to be someplace to eat or drink either; so if you have a small business that you want to share with everyone see if they want to place an ad. The form is on the website if you want to download it. See you at the chili cook off!!! Thanks! 3 A Word on Safety With the first days of riding nearing many of us are longing for the rumble of the engine, and the breeze on the knees! Safety on the road is a serious matter and begins with the realization that we are once again about to embark onto the roadways shared by vehicles much larger than our two-wheeled chariots. Whether you store your bike at the dealer or in your own garages it s important to remember to have your bike safety checked. There s nothing quite like riding a motorcycle on an open road, especially on a beautiful, spring day in the midwest. Here are a few tips from the people at the Allstate Insurance Company: In addition to yearly tune-ups, you ll want to regularly check: Oil levels Tires for wear and loss of tread Lights and signals Brake pads and brake fluid Battery cables and connectors Chain strength and lubrication Filters including oil, air and fuel Fuel levels and fuel lines, look for leaks Steering for smoothness and appropriate tightness Many of us choose not to wear a helmet, this is an individual choice. According to the National Traffic Safety Institute we should all wear a helmet. It s worth repeating twice. Motorcycle helmets are your best defense against traumatic injury. Stop into the dealer, the new helmet technology is making helmets lighter and far more comfortable than in the past, it s worth your time and consideration. Don t forget your other riding gear like jackets, leg wear, and appropriate foot gear. Leather goes a long way to protecting against the horrible effects of sliding on asphalt should you have to go down. Visibility is such an important matter as we take to the highways both in the front and the rear of your bike; consider investing in an LED upgrade. They are brighter than the standard lights that come equipped on our bikes. They go a long way toward letting others know you re on the road. The distance between vehicles is one of your best line of defense when riding on two, or three wheels. Remember the two-second rule, that s one-one thousand, two-one thousand. The more room you leave yourself the more options you have when things go wrong. When riding in groups you should leave a minimum of two seconds between you and the bike directly in front of you and one second between the bike in the staggered position. NEVER ride two bikes side-by-side, this is a recipe for disaster. I feel these simple considerations are very often forgotten, so try to incorporate it into your daily riding practice, it s a way to make safety a regular part of your riding experience. Remember it s springtime and that means the critters are movings once again. There s nothing scarier than a wild animal suddenly sharing the road with you, remember to be on the lookout. Visually scan your path of travel (at least 12 seconds ahead), recognize potential hazards and devote extra attention to them without ignoring the rest of the scene. I know it s a lot to consider, but in the end, routinely practicing safety on your bikes is what keeps us from becoming another statistic! Bob Clampit, Safety Officer 3
