2 ***Cautins*** 1. Pwer system. Overpwering this mdel with a heavier / mre pwerful system is nt recmmended. Stevens AerMdel recmmends a pwer system n greater than 600W, a maximum pitch speed f 50 mph, and a maximum all up weight (AUW) f 40 z. Outrunner mtrs like the Hacker A30 transmit a great deal f stress t the mtr munt. DO NOT run yur mtr up until yu have verified that yur blade is accurately balanced and in perfect track. Finally, disable yur ESC s prp braking functin. 2. Thrttle management. Similar t full-scale and giant scale mdels this high perfrmance mdel requires careful thrttle management. When tracking thrugh a dwn-line it is mandatry t gvern the use f thrttle, slwing the mdels descent, t avid ver stressing the airframe. 3. Flying ff grass. The mdel has been designed t fly frm a smth dirt r paved surface. If yu must fly frm a turf field run a large diameter narrw wheel and remve wheel pants (if equipped). WARRANTY Stevens AerMdel guarantees this kit t be free frm defects in bth material and wrkmanship at the date f purchase. This warranty des nt cver any cmpnent parts damaged by use r mdificatin. In n case shall Stevens AerMdel s liability exceed the riginal cst f the purchased kit. Stevens AerMdel reserves the right t change r mdify this warranty withut ntice. In that Stevens AerMdel has n cntrl ver the final assembly r material used fr final assembly, n liability shall be assumed nr accepted fr any damage resulting frm the use by the user f the final user-assembled prduct. By the act f using the user assembled prduct, the user accepts all resulting liability. 4 Tail Feathers General Cnstructin Ntes: This kit features ur prprietary Trus-Lc system as such typical stick type cnstructin has been replaced by precisely cut stick cmpnents that are keyed t fit in nly ne directin. The knuckles f the truss are identified with an alpha-numeric use this t match adjining truss cmpnents A t A and B t B etc. If a part des nt fit prperly chances are very gd that yu have the wrng part r the part is in backwards. Under n circumstances shuld yu need t fill significant gaps r re shape the parts. 1. All f the parts t create the tail feathers are lcated n the 3/16 balsa sheets SHAFT-17/21 and 18/21. This kit is a bit special as we have included an alternate set f Hrizntal Stabilizer and Elevatr (fr thse wh prefer the squared ff lk f the stick plane thus yu ll find an extra sheet 17/21 in this kit distributin) Remve parts frm the sheet with a sharp #11 hbby blade. Assemble the parts n tp f yur plan sheet using the drawings n the sheet t reference part lcatin and rientatin. Frame up all tail feather cmpnents as illustrated belw. 2. Jin the elevatr halves. Lcate the prvided 3/16 basswd laser cut elevatr jiner, and prepare t bnd the tw elevatr halves tgether. Tip: Lightly sand the bass wd elevatr jiner and elevatr halves just enugh t remve the laser burn mark where these tw cmpnents will be bnded (d nt significantly alter the shape f the parts) this prduces a strnger bnd fr this high stress area. Use a straight edge t align elevatr halves with bass wd jiner and bnd with a high quality medium weight CA glue (Mercury 100XF wrks brilliantly here) Stevens AerMdel. Page 9 f 35
5 Fuselage General Cnstructin Ntes: This fuselage utilizes an imprved tab and ntch cnstructin methd pineered by Stevens AerMdel. Each cmpnent precisely interlcks using unique tab and ntch sizes t allw the parts t nly fit in ne directin. Where parts rientatin can be reversed r inverted parts are scribed with a reference such as tp r frnt fr prper rientatin. Thrughut cnstructin we suggest dry-fitting all cmpnents, and using minimal amunts f glue at tab and ntch lcatins nly t hld parts tgether. By dry fitting the fuselage, each successive cmpnent will assist with pulling the assembly square and straight. 1. Begin cnstructin by finding the 1/8 balsa sheets SHAFT-04/21, 15/21, and 16/21. Lcate and assemble the parts labeled FSa and FSb alng with the crrespnding interlcking truss parts t create tw fuselage sides. Tip: us a straight edge t align the fuselage sides prir t bnding with thin CA glue. Assemble F11a and F11b t create ne F11 frmer. Assemble F7a, F7b, and F7c t create ne F7 frmer. Assemble H2a, H2b, and H2c t create ne H2 battery hatch cmpnent (make certain scribe lines running lengthwise alng H2 cmpnents are n the same side). See illustratin belw and plan set fr further reference. 2. Assembly f the fuselage crutch begins. USE NO GLUE TO BOND THE PARTS UNTIL INSTRUCTED. Lcate the 1/8 lite plywd frmer part F0 and 1/16 plywd frmer part F2. Nte: Bth F0 and F2 are scribed TOP t indicate prper tp-side rientatin. Ensure TOP faces up AND frward (twards mtr). Place F2 thrugh the large lightening hle in F0. Align the ntches in F2 with the inside rails f F0, then rtate F2 int the receiving ntches f F0. Hint: This fit is snug s gently cax the part int psitin wrking ne side, then the ther be mindful f hw much frce yu use s that yu d nt break the part. See illustratins belw. 3. Lcate the 1/8 lite plywd frmer F1 place n yur wrk table with the scribed part number facing dwn. Install fur 4-40 blind nuts and retain with medium CA glue (careful here yu d nt want glue within the threaded prtin f the blind nut) Stevens AerMdel. Page 10 f 35
6 4. Nw install the frmer F1 t the fuselage crutch F0 bserving prper frward and tp-side rientatin. Finally, lcate the 1/16 plywd frmer F3 and key t the fuselage crutch assembly as illustrated belw. Again, this frmers installatin directin has been identified with the scribing f TOP n the part t signal the tp and frward rientatin f the cmpnent. 5. Next, key the 1/16 plywd G1 landing gear supprts t bth sides f the fuselage crutch, as illustrated in the pht belw. 6. Test fit the cmpleted fuselage crutch t ne f the 1/8 balsa FS fuselage sides. Any failure t fllw the prper tp-side part rientatin will be revealed here. If the tabs in yur fuselage crutch d nt align with the ntches in the fuselage side yu will need t re-visit the crutch assembly and pay careful attentin t the tpside part rientatin (as instructed, yu haven t glued the crutch right?). With the test fit successful, tack glue each f the crutch parts tgether. Finally, tack glue bth 1/8 balsa fuselage sides t the crutch at tab and ntch lcatins as illustrated belw Stevens AerMdel. 7 7. Lcate the 1/8 lite plywd part F00 and lightly sand a chamfer t the edges f the tw lng legs allwing F00 t readily slide within the keyed pckets f the central crutch F0. Install F00 as illustrated in the pht series belw, square t fuselage, and retain with thin CA glue. 8. DO NOT OVERLOOK THIS STEP! F1 will bear a cnsiderable lad frm in-flight stresses frm the mtr and prpeller. With the fuselage sides jined t the crutch, and access t the F1 firewall still un-restricted, nw is the time t thrughly bnd frmer F1 t the frward prtin f the crutch and the fuselage sides. Wick liberal amunts f thin CA glue alng the jints where F1 tuches the fuselage assembly. Once the thin CA glue has cured, build up a small fillet f medium CA glue alng the same jints. 9. Befre the frnt f the fuselage is sealed up we need t install the balsa crss grain dublers fr the frward wing dwel munts. Lcate the 3/32 balsa parts marked F10a and install these within bth sides f the fuselage assembly just frward f frmer F2. See the plan set and phts belw fr further guidance. 10. Assemble frmer F8 frm a laminate f 3/32 balsa and 1/32 plywd. Lcate the 3/32 balsa part F8a and the 1/32 ply part F8b and, while carefully matching sides glue tgether t create a very strng F8 frmer! 2007 Stevens AerMdel. Page 12 f 35
8 11. Key 1/8 balsa frmer F7 (assembled in step 1) t prper lcatin n tp-side f fuselage assembly. Square fuselage and parts t yur flat wrk surface and prceed t glue frmer F7 in place with thin CA glue. See first illustratin belw. Next, invert fuselage and key frmer assembly F8 (frm previus step 10) t prper lcatin n underside f fuselage assembly WITH THE BALSA HALF FACING OUTSIDE. Square fuselage and parts t yur flat wrk surface and prceed t glue frmer F8 in place. See secnd illustratin belw. 12. Lcate the 1/16 ply part G2a and 1/32 ply part G2b. Glue these n tp f each ther carefully matching the uter edges t create part G2. Next, key the assembled part G2 landing gear re-enfrcement strap t the ntches prvided in the underside f the fuselage as illustrated belw. Retain with thin CA glue fllwed by and applicatin f medium CA glue alng the inside jints. 13. Lcate previusly assembled 1/8 balsa frmer F11 (assembled in step 1) and install tw (2) 4-40 blind nuts as illustrated belw. Retain blind nuts with medium CA glue. D nt allw glue cntact with the threaded prtin f the blind nut Stevens AerMdel. Page 13 f 35
9 14. Befre applying glue lcate the 1/16 plywd frmer F6, and key it t 1/8 balsa frmer F11, and fuselage sides, as illustrated belw. Square fuselage t building bard and tack glue parts int psitin at tab and ntch lcatins. VERY IMPORTANT: The rim and spike prtin f the blind nut shuld be lcated within the fuselage bdy (n the same side as the large lightening hle in frmer F6) s that the threaded prtin f the blind nut is expsed t the underside f the fuselage. Pay clse attentin t the illustratins abve and belw s that yu dn t inadvertently install part F11 upside dwn. 15. Bnd 3/32 balsa frmer F12 t fuselage as illustrated in the first pht belw. Next, key 3/32 balsa part F13 t underside f fuselage atp F12, and spanning fuselage sides, and frmer F3. Make certain that F13 fits flush with fuselage sides and is prperly seated at all tab and ntch lcatins. Nw, square yur fuselage assembly t yur flat wrk surface and tack glue part F13 int psitin at all tab and ntch lcatins. 16. Befre we seal up the aft prtin f the fuselage, we have sme imprtant business t attend t. First, install the 3/32 balsa crss-grain dublers F10b within the fuselage assembly, flush with frmer F3 and F14, as illustrated in the first pht. *** OPTIONAL AS THE DEFAULT SERVO ARRANGEMENT IS TO USE PUSHRODS DESCRIBED IN STEPS 23 and 24 Nw mve aft within the fuselage, and install 1/32 plywd serv pcket supprts SR3 t each side f the assembly (within the fuselage), as illustrated in the secnd pht belw. *** 2007 Stevens AerMdel. 10 Nw is a gd time t verify that the push-rd husing will easily fit within the laser cut hles f frmers F3, F4, and F5. Lcate the 18 length f plastic.090 diameter pushrd husing and test fit t hles prvided in these frmers. Adjust the hle size using a rat-tailed file if necessary. 17. Cmplete the mid sectin f the aft fuselage assembly by first installing the 1/16 plywd frmers F4 and F5 as illustrated belw. Next, key the 3/32 balsa frmer F9 t the tp f the fuselage assembly spanning frmers F3, F4, F5, F6 and fuselage sides, as illustrated belw. Here s a neat assembly trick. Use a scrap piece f the 3/16 balsa stck frm which yur tail surfaces were cut. Slip this scrap in the slt at the aft end f the fuselage t assist in prperly seating the parts at the tail sectin. Carefully tack glue the tail sectin, remve the scrap, then cmplete the tail with a gd applicatin f thin CA alng the inside surfaces. JUST BE CAREFUL NOT TO GLUE THE SCRAP WITHIN THE TAIL SECTION SLOT! 18. Final glue all fuselage parts. Fr the mst part we have been utilizing thin CA glue t hld parts in psitin while we cmplete the fuselage assembly. At this pint it s time t finalize the fuselage by re-visiting every surface t surface jint with thin CA glue making certain that all parts are securely bnded. Hld yu fuselage flat against yur building surface while bnding t ensure that it remains straight Stevens AerMdel. Page 15 f 35
11 19. Battery hatch assembly: Lcate the 3/32 balsa parts H1 and H2 (H2 assembled in step 1). Align H1 atp H2 using the scribe marks n H2 and vent hle in parts t assist with prper centering f H1. While hlding the hatch assembly flat n yur wrk surface prceed t wick liberal amunts f thin CA between parts. Finally, glue ne f the 3/16 diameter ne. magnets int the 3/16 diameter hle, as illustrated in the secnd pht. 20. Install battery hatch catch within fuselage assembly. Lcate the 1/16 plywd parts H3 and H4 and install these t the fuselage using the plan sheet and illustratins belw t guide yur wrk. 21. Cmplete assembly by installing the secnd ne. magnet within the assembled catch. VERY IMPORTANT: Magnets are plarized. They will attract with great frce and will likewise repel each ther with great frce if ne f the ples is reversed. Check t see that magnets stick t each ther. Tip: Mark cntacting faces with permanent marker. Install the secnd magnet with the marked side facing ut. Duble check that when the hatch is installed t the fuselage it will be attracted t the catch. Glue the magnet t the catch assembly by wicking thin ca glue arund the magnet. Once the glue has dried yu can pp the battery hatch n t the fuselage assembly in preparatin fr final sanding Stevens AerMdel. Page 16 f 35
12 22. *** OPTIONAL STEP APPLIES TO SQUARE TAIL SURFACE ONLY DO NOT COMPLETE THIS STEP IF YOU PLAN TO RUN THE ORIGINAL ROUNDED/SWEPT HORIZONTAL STABILIZER. If yu ve decided t run the square Hrizntal Stabilizer and Elevatr assembly yu ll need t install a the 3/16 balsa part marked PLUG lcated n the same sheet yu cnstructed this tail grup frm. The PLUG installs as illustrated belw CA it in t cmplete the finished lk f yur fuselage when running the alternate set f flying surfaces. *** 23. Prir t installing the tw 18 lengths f plastic push-rd husing yu ll need t remve the push-rd exit knckuts which are partially cut and lcated n either side f the fuselage tail sectin. Use a sharp razr t remve the retentin tabs and knck the plugs ut. 24. Prir t final sanding the mdel yu ll want t Install the tw 18 lengths f.090 diameter pushrd tubing. First, slip the tubing thrugh the aft end f the fuselage thrugh the penings left frm remving the plugs in the prir step. Left and Right tubing passes thrugh the lightening hle in frmer F6, crss the tubes, then pass thrugh prvided lcating hles in frmer F5, F4, and F3. Tubing shuld extend 1/8 frward f F3 with excess length left at aft end f fuselage. Glue the push rd tubes in psitin using medium CA glue (d nt allw glue t get within the tubing) Stevens AerMdel. 13 Nw using a very sharp knife, cut then sand the tubing flush with the fuselage sides where they exit at the aft end f the fuselage assembly. 25. Final sand yur fuselage using a sanding blck and 400 grit paper. Slightly radius the edges f the fuselage and remve any expsed laser burn marks. DO NOT sand/mdify the shape f the wing saddle Stevens AerMdel. Page 18 f 35
14 Wing General Cnstructin Ntes: This wing is f typical I-Beam cnstructin with additinal trsinal strength derived frm the trussed sub ribs. Each cmpnent precisely interlcks using the interlcking I-beam cnstructin methd develped by Stevens AerMdel. Thrughut cnstructin, we suggest dry-fitting all cmpnents, and using minimal amunts f glue at tab and ntch lcatins nly t hld parts tgether. By dry fitting the wing, each successive cmpnent will assist with pulling the wing square and straight. It is nt required t pin the wing t yur building surface. In-fact, mst f yur building will be dne abve the bard. Yu will, hwever, require a flat surface t set the wing n tp f fr final gluing f the assembly. One interesting feature f the SHAFT 25e kit is ur incrpratin f prvisins fr quad / split ailern / flaps. In this case the ailerns are split int tw units. This is a ppular setup with pilts f stick type planes. Just s there is n cnfusin we have built in prvisins t assist the builder with munting and rigging this setup beynd shwing yu where the parts assemble the builder is n their wn with implementing the quad / split ailern / system at the time f publicatin Stevens AerMdel des nt ffer technical assistance fr implementing this setup. 1. Begin cnstructin by assembling majr parts frm sub assemblies: W1a and W1b t create W1 turbulatr with jig. W2a and W2b t create tw (2) W2 turbulatrs. S1a and tw (2) each S1b t create S1 spar webbing, S2a and S2b t create tw (2) spar web caps. T1a, T1b, and T1c t create T1 trailing edge. Assemblies are jined alng the pre-cut scarf and finger jints. Reference parts alng a straight edge and bnd at the scarf jints using medium CA glue. See illustratin belw fr parts reference. 2. Cmplete the S1 spar web assembly. Lcate the previusly assembled 3/32 balsa S1 spar web and the 1/16 plywd S1c spar web dubler. Align S1c n tp f the S1 assembly, centering S1c n tp f S1 at the wing center sectin. Apply liberal amunts f medium CA glue between the parts t laminate the ply spar web dubler t the spar web assembly. Nte: S1c shuld nt cver any f the rib (and sub-rib) ntches in S1 and shuld end right at the inside edge f the ntches fr sub rib R2a. See illustratins belw Stevens AerMdel. Page 19 f 35
15 3. Key the cmplete re-enfrced S1 assembly atp ne f the S2 spar cap strips. Tack glue these parts tgether at the tab and ntch lcatins. Nw lcate the tw (2) 3/16 balsa R1 ribs and key these t the slts in S1 n either side f the center sectin f the S1 assembly. VERY IMPORTANT: The plywd dubler laminated previusly t S1 must face frward tward the wing leading edge. Set the secnd S2 spar cap aside as this will nt be jined t the assembly until much later. See illustratin belw. 4. *** OPTIONAL STEP If yu plan n running the split ailern setup nw r in the future yu ll want t remve the circular knck-uts in ribs R2 and R3 t allw the utbard ailern serv wires t pass thrugh. *** 5. Fill ut the remainder f the wing by installing 3/32 balsa wing ribs R2, R3, R4, and 1/8 balsa rib R5 t the S1 spar web. Use the plan sheet as a guide fr rib lcatin. While nt required, yu may tack glue the wing ribs t S1 at as lng as yu d s nly where the rib meets the ntches in the lwer spar cap Stevens AerMdel. Page 20 f 35
16 6. Serv pcket selectin. The SHAFT 25e ships with prvisins fr several ailern serv setups. The recmmended setup is t run tw (2) HS-81 servs ne (1) each per side. Fr this default setup yu ll need t lcate and install the fllwing parts 1/32 ply SR81a and 1/8 balsa SR81b serv pckets spanning the S1 spar web and rib R2. *** OPTIONAL SETUP 1 - If yu chse t run the ptinal split ailern setup yu have sme chices t make regarding serv pcket sizes. Optin 1 run tw (2) each HS-81 s inbard fr the inbard ailern/flap surface and tw (2) each HS-65 s fr the utbard ailern/flap surface. This is a gd ptin if yu wish t build the SHAFT 25e with a single mvable ailern surface then later upgrade/experiment with the quad ailern/flap setup. Fr this setup yu ll need t lcate and install the fllwing parts 1/32 ply SR81a and 1/8 balsa SR81b serv pckets spanning the S1 spar web and rib R2 and parts 1/32 ply SR65a and 1/8 balsa SR65b serv pckets spanning the S1 spar web and rib R4. *** *** OPTIONAL SETUP 2 Optin 2 is the best ptin fr running the quad/flap/ailern system as it utilizes fur f the same type serv s yu can be assured that the split ailerns will mve in unisn when functining as ailerns. Fr this ptin yu ll run fur (4) each HS-65 s inbard and utbard fr the ailern/flap surfaces. This is a gd ptin if yu intend t set up the SHAFT 25e with the quad ailern/flap setup frm the get g. Fr this setup yu ll need t lcate and install the fllwing parts 1/32 ply SR65a and 1/8 balsa SR65b serv pckets spanning the S1 spar web and rib R2 and spanning the S1 spar web and rib R4. *** 2007 Stevens AerMdel. 17 Select yur ailern setup and crrespnding serv pcket parts per the guidance n the previus page. Nw, g ahead and bnd the 1/16 ply serv pcket in place making certain it is firmly seated against spar web, spar cap strip and rib. Bnd the 1/8 balsa part n tp f the plywd serv pcket and flush with the edge f the spar cap and rib. The pht series belw shws the installatin f the Optin 1 serv selectin frm previus page. If building the default tw ailern serv wing nly the first three phts will apply. If building the Optin 2 setup yu ll use the SR65a and SR65b parts cntrary t what is illustrated in the first three phts. Clear as mud? Dry fit the cmpnents then duble check yur wrk against the servs yu ve chsen nce satisfied cmplete the assembly with glue. 7. Lcate the 1/8 balsa part W6 and bnd t the wing center sectin using the ntches in ribs R1 t align with the tabs in the W6 part. 8. Key the 3/16 balsa T1 trailing edge t wing assembly (previusly assembled in step 1). The ntched trailing edge shuld seat flush with the bttm and trailing edge f the wing assembly ribs. With the trailing edge prperly fit, tack glue the part t the assembly where it interlcks with each rib Stevens AerMdel. Page 22 f 35
18 9. Install the 3/32 balsa W3 wing truss cmpnents. The trailing edge f W3 shuld be cmpletely received within the ntches at the wing trailing edge, and fit with full cntact against the spar and wing ribs at the leading edge f W3. Dry fit all W3 parts t pull the wing assembly square. Next, key the 3/16 balsa wing tips W5 t the assembly and tack int psitin with a drp f CA glue where it meets the uter wing rib and trailing edge. Lay the wing flat n tp f yur building bard. Then prceed t tack glue the W3 truss parts at the trailing edge and where they cntact the S1 spar and S2 spar cap. 10. Lcate the 3/32 balsa sub ribs R1a, R2a, R3a, and R4a and key these t the S1 spar web as illustrated belw. Inspect the fit t make certain that the sub ribs seat flush with the web, then tack glue the sub ribs frm the back side f the web at the tab and ntch jint. 11. Install 3/16 balsa LE rib dublers marked LE2 t the left and right inside surface f ribs R1. See phts belw Stevens AerMdel. Page 23 f 35
19 12. Lcate the 1/8 balsa W1 turbulatr (W2 is smaller than W1 and lacks ntches). W1 is ntched n ne side and shuld be installed t the frward mst turbulatr ntch spanning all ribs. At this pint it s time t finalize the wing assembly by re-visiting every surface t surface jint with thin CA glue making certain that all parts are securely bnded. 22 21. Shape the leading edge. Grab yur 400 grit sanding blck and razr plane. Prceed t rugh the leading edge f the wing rund using yur razr plane then fllw up with a few swipes f 400 grit paper n yur sanding blck. Test fit the wing t fuselage ften thrugh this prcess. Just as the turbulatrs alng mid-span ribs sit prud by 3/32 s shuld yur wing leading edge. That is t say, yur wing leading edge shuld be sanded flush with the prfile f nly ribs R1 and R5, and remain prud f the mid-span ribs by 3/32 (see step 12 and use scrap 3/32 balsa as height a gauge). A razr plane makes shrt wrk f shaping cmpnents such as wing leading and trailing edges (we suggest the Master Airscrew MAS4100 razr plane). If yu d nt have the luxury f a $7 razr plane fr this prject a lng sanding blck r bar laded with mre aggressive grit paper ( ) will suffice. 22. Run yur sanding blck acrss all exterir wing surfaces t remve the laser burn in preparatin fr cvering. D nt significantly mdify the shape f the airfil as yu sand Stevens AerMdel. Page 27 f 35

24 Hard Pints In the fllwing steps we are simply fitting each cmpnent. D nt secure the hard pints with glue until after the fuselage has been cvered. 1. Use the plan sheet t reference the lcatin and sizing f bth 3/16 hardwd wing retentin dwels. Sand a chamfer r rund the edges f the dwels. With cnstant pressure, and a gentle twisting mtin, wrk the dwels thrugh the hles in the fuselage sides. REMOVE dwels then harden hles with Thin CA. 2. D the same with the 1/4 diameter hardwd dwel fr the landing gear munt. Rund the ends, test fit, remve, and harden hles with Thin CA. 3. The pht belw illustrates hw the landing gear is banded t each side f the 1/4 dwel hard pint. The methd fr landing gear attachment is as fllws: Start ne #33 rubber band arund 1/4 dwel then wrap arund the tp lp f the landing gear and back arund tp f dwel repeat s that yu have a minimum f 4 wraps f rubber band arund the landing gear lp and dwel then place the end lp f the rubber band ver the 1/4 dwel. Add mre lps r increase rubber band gauge t reduce shck absrptin f landing gear assembly Stevens AerMdel. Page 29 f 35
25 Tail Skid 1. Use the prvided 1/16 music wire stck and cut/bend t shape as described n the plan sheet under the heading Tail Skid / Hrizntal Stab. Retaining Bracket. Next, gather the ply tail skid parts F14a (1/32 ply), F14b (1/16 ply), and F14c (1/32 ply). With the required parts in hand, begin assembly by bnding part F14b atp F14a. Install the 1/16 wire skid t the pcket in F14b, glue, then further retain wire skid by gluing F14c n tp f F14b. 2. Once the glue has cured use yur pliers t bend the tail skid s that it extends straight ut f plywd tail skid bracket. Nw bend dwn as illustrated n plan sheet. Finish skid by rlling the end f the skid wire up as illustrated n the plan sheet Stevens AerMdel. Page 30 f 35
26 3. Lcate the prvided ½ 4-40 blts. The blts will pass thrugh the tail skid, then thrugh the hrizntal stabilizer and secure int the blind nuts that were installed within the fuselage at F11 as previusly described in this text Stevens AerMdel. Page 31 f 35
27 Final Assembly Ntes General infrmatin: Final assembly assumes that the builder has sme degree f experience finishing ARC/ARF style mdels and will nt be described in agnizing detail. Verify parts fit and hinge methd: Prir t cvering this mdel all cmpnents shuld be dry fit tgether, Pay clse attentin t the fit f the wing t the wing saddle in the fuselage and the fit f the vertical stabilizer t the fuselage assembly. Yu must als have prepared yur cntrl surfaces based upn the hinge scheme. By far the quickest methd fr hinging cntrl surfaces is using tape hinges. Tp hinged tape hinges are quick, prduce sme degree f differential thrw fr the ailerns, and d nt require gap sealing. The plan sheet suggests hw t sand the leading edge f the cntrl surfaces in preparatin fr the tape hinge methd. (If yu prefer t use CA hinges, we suggest btaining SIG brand easy hinges part SIGSH710. The plan set references suggested easy hinge lcatins, and ffers guidance fr cutting these t the prper size. The leading edge f all cntrl surfaces must als be adjusted fr a center hinge methd using tw 45 deg. bevels.) Cver the mdel: Cver all wing and fuselage cmpnents using yur favrite cvering. We recmmend using AerLITE r AerFILM available frm StevensAer.Cm. AerLITE will save abut z. in weight ver AerFILM r heavier cvering materials. As cvering techniques are beynd the scpe f this build manual we suggest visiting the AerFILM prduct page at ur web site ( and reading the AerFILM cvering guide. Where t remve cvering: When cvering yu shuld remve cvering frm the lightening hle in frmer F1 t allw cling airflw within the fuselage. Remve cvering frm the vent hle in the battery hatch t allw cling air t exit the fuselage and allw yu a finger hld fr installatin and remval f the hatch. It is nt required t remve cvering frm the vertical stabilizer where it bnds t the fuselage. Hinge cntrl surfaces: Attach cntrl surfaces t the mdel using the tape hinge methd described n the plan set, r with CA hinges if yu prefer that ptin. Install hard pints fr wing and gear: Center the 3/16 dwels fr wing retentin t the fuselage and secure with CA glue. Center the 1/4 dwel fr landing gear retentin and secure t the fuselage with thin CA glue. Installatin f tail feathers: Key the vertical stabilizer and rudder t the fuselage. See that the tabs in the vertical stabilizer fit the ntches in the fuselage and secure with thin CA glue. Blt the elevatr assembly and tail skid in place as described previusly in this manual. Radi and serv installatin: Install yur receiver and servs. We suggest fur (4) Hitec HS-81 r similar servs. Reference the plan sheet fr serv lcatins. Yur elevatr and rudder servs shuld be installed in the pre-cut serv pckets within the battery cmpartment and cnnected t the Elevatr and Rudder using pushrds threaded thrugh the previusly installed pushrd husings. Serv pckets just frward f the Hrizntal Stab are ffered fr flexibility if running a heavier than recmmended mtr. With yur servs installed, fire up yur radi and center all servs. Fr HS-81 servs use the duble sided cntrl hrn prvided in the serv parts package (nt the default circular hrn). Mechanically center yur serv cntrl hrns s that they are perpendicular t the serv bdy. Install the prvided Du-Br EZ-Cnnectrs (DUB845) t the center hle n all serv cntrl arms (yu can mve this munting psitin farther ut alng the serv cntrl hrn fr mre aggressive surface travel). Du-Br Micr Razr (DUB936) tw pst cntrl hrns have been prvided in this kit. Ream the cntrl hrns t fit the.045 wire push rds and Install these n the same side f the cntrl surface that yur push-rd will reside n. Cntrl hrns will install int the laser drilled hles in each part. Use the plan sheet as a guide t bend yur push/pull rds frm the included 12 and 18 lengths f 0.45 diameter wire stck. Install push/pull rds with the L bend placed thrugh the uter mst psitin n cntrl surface hrns and retain using the prvided Du-Br Micr2 EZ-Links (DUB920). In the pht series belw cvering and hinges have been mitted fr clarity nly as this step anticipates that yur surfaces are cvered and hinged Stevens AerMdel. Page 32 f 35
28 Cntrl surface adjustments: Adjust rudder parallel with vertical stabilizer and set psitin by tightening set screw in EZ- Cnnectr. Adjust elevatr parallel with hrizntal stabilizer and set psitin by tightening set screw in EZ-Cnnectr. VERY IMPORTANT: With the wing seated in fuselage adjust ailern parallel t angle f tp side f fuselage. Under n circumstances shuld the ailerns be centered flat with the bttm surface f the wing. If using a cmputer radi set cntrl surface thrws t thse recmmended n the plan sheet. We suggest a starting pint f 30% exp t smth ut yur cntrl f the sticks. Cut all push rds dwn allwing nly ½ additinal length beynd the ez-cnnectr at each serv. Mtr and prpeller munting: Munt the Hacker A30-16M, VSprt 350, r E-Flite Pwer 10 using the radial munting hardware included with yur mtr package. Nte the spacing n the 4-40 blind nuts has been established fr the Hacker A30-16M using any ther mtr may require slightly elngating the hles in the mtr munt hardware. Secure the mtr t the firewall using the prvided fur (4) 4-40 x 3/8 machine screws (thread-lcking cmpund n these screws is highly recmmended). Prper dwn thrust is built int the firewall. Tw 1/16 plywd washers are prvided in this kit t shim the left side f the mtr (as viewed frm the cckpit) t achieve prper right thrust. Place bth ply washer under each f the tw left side mtr munt arms. Right thrust will vary with yur pwer system selectin but we have fund that with the recmmended Hacker A30-16M and 11x5.5 prpeller ne 1/16 shim is typically abut right. T reduce right thrust simply remve the shim and reduce it s thickness thrugh sanding. Install yur balanced prpeller t the mtr. Never run a prpeller assuming it is in balance withut checking it first. Never run a prpeller that is knwn t be damaged, repaired, r ut f balance. Never run a mtr with a bent shaft. Inflight vibratin frm ut f rund and ut f balance cmpnents will cause pre-mature failure f airframe and electrical cmpnents. If yu are un-certain hw t balance a prpeller, seek advice frm an experienced hbbyist r yur lcal hbby retailer. Munt the wing: Prir t munting the wing yu ll need t fit and install the wing retentin tabs 1/16 plywd parts LE3 t the wing leading edge. First, verify that LE3 readily fits within rectangular ntches f frmer F2 adjust thickness as required s that LE3 easily slips in and ut f this ntch. Next slt yur cvering at the wing leading edge where LE3 installs. Seat LE3 int psitin as illustrated belw. Again, test the fit t the fuselage, adjust fit, and retain parts by wicking thin CA arund slts hlding LE3. Nte that cvering has been mitted fr clarity in the pht belw. Retain wing t fuselage using fur (4) #33 rubber bands tw (2) n each side f the fuselage. Use fresh rubber bands prir t each flying sessin. DO NOT crss the rubber bands, use bands f greater size / thickness, r exceed six (6) rubber bands (three per side) as this will prevent the wing frm cleanly departing the fuselage in the event f a crash Stevens AerMdel. Page 33 f 35
29 Landing gear assembly: Place wheels n the landing gear assembly and retain by frcing the 1/8 star washer wheel retainers ver the 1/8 axle. Retain landing gear t fuselage using tw (2) #33 rubber bands ne (1) n each side f the fuselage. Use fresh rubber bands prir t every flying sessin. Use the methd fr landing gear attachment as described previusly in this text. Battery installatin and Center f Gravity: Mve battery fre and aft within fuselage t adjust the mdels Center f Gravity (CG). We suggest lcating the CG f the mdel in the upright psitin s that the fuselage bttm is level with the hrizn when balancing the airframe by a finger tip psitined n the underside f each wing panel aft f the wing leading edge. 3.5 aft will make the mdel mderately psitively stable in pitch (self recvering). 4.0 aft is ideal fr mre neutral aerbatic perfrmance. Wrk the CG aft frm the starting pint f 3.5 as yur skill allw. Lateral mdel balance: Place a rund head pin in the rudder assembly near the bttm f the rudder. With the rudder aligned parallel t the fuselage and vertical stabilizer supprt the mdel inverted with ne finger n pin head and the ther finger n the mtr shaft. With the mdel suspended in this fashin yur wing tips shuld balance level with the hrizn. If yur mdel des nt balance laterally, add an apprpriate amunt f weight t the high wing tip until mdel balances. Hint: I use adhesive graphics like cntrasting clr bars n the underside f my wing t balance the mdel and aid visibility. Warped structure: Check wing and tail surfaces ver carefully lking fr signs f twists r warps that will need t be remved prir t flying. In the unlikely event that yu have a warped surface, have a partner heat the cvering f the surface using a heat gun n lw heat setting while yu gently apply a crrective twist t the structure ppsite the warp. Allw the surface t cl while hlding the crrective twist. Release crrectin and check t see that yu were successful. If need be, repeat prcess until surfaces are straight and true. Pre flight check (perfrm every flight): N visible damage t airframe r cvering? Flight pack batteries charged? Transmitter batteries fully charged? Prper mdel selected n radi? (applies t cmputer radi) Range check f radi successful? Center f gravity set prperly (3 frm leading edge f wing) Cntrl rds securely cnnected? Fresh rubber bands prperly installed n wing and landing gear? Cntrl surfaces mving prper directins? (dn t just wiggle them, check fr prper directin f travel) Prpeller secure? Clear the prpeller and perfrm run-up. Smth thrttle respnse with n vibratin? Flying site clear? Upn successful pre-flight annunce yur departure and cmmit aviatin! Pint mdel int wind smthly apply pwer and crrective right rudder. Mdel shuld lift ff in abut feet with applicatin f ¾ thrttle. Climb ut smthly t safe altitude. Trim mdel fr level flight in bth pitch and rll axis. Mdel shuld nt be sensitive t speed (nse up r dwn with pwer changes). If significant pitch attitude changes appear with applicatin f thrttle, re-visit ailern setup as described in this text. Rll mdel inverted. Slight dwnward pressure n elevatr shuld be required t maintain inverted flight.
