2 Tri-Mde Technlgy GREEN LIGHT Tri-Mde checks cmplete RTR permits prduct transfer MODE 1 Tank Truck Recgnitin In accrdance with the recmmendatins f IEC *, the Earth-Rite RTR determines if the grunding clamp is cnnected t a tank truck. This ensures the clamp is cnnected t the main bdy f the tank truck and cannt be bypassed by cnnecting the clamp t the lading rack. MODE 2 Static Grund Verificatin The ensures that it has a cnnectin t the general mass f the earth. This is a critical input as a cnnectin t earth is the nly means by which the static electricity can be transferred frm the tank truck, preventing the accumulatin f static electricity. Hazardus Area Strbe Light The strbe light is munted in an elevated psitin and when the equipment is crrectly grunded, flashes cntinuusly infrming persnnel that a transfer prcess is underway and is prtected frm the static hazard. 8 VESM02 Retractable Cable Reel The VESM02 Retractable Cable Reel is supplied fr grunding system installatins where custmers want t ensure the grunding clamp and cable are returned t the static grunding system by peratrs and drivers n cmpletin f the prduct transfer prcess. As the prduct (liquid r pwder) mves thrugh the transfer system and interacts with pumps, valves, filters meshes and pipe walls, the prduct will be building up the amunt f electrstatic charge it carries. In electrical terms this is cmmnly described as static charge accumulatin. When the charged prduct is transferred int the tank truck, the tank truck will becme electrified and be subjected t a rising vltage. When a typical tank truck is being filled with a liquid at recmmended flw rates, but has n static grunding prtectin in place, it culd have its vltage raised t between 10,000 vlts and 30,000 vlts within 10 t 50 secnds. This vltage range is very capable f discharging a high energy electrstatic spark twards bjects at a lwer vltage ptential, especially anything at grund ptential. Examples f bjects at grund ptential culd be peratrs wrking in the vicinity f the truck, r the filling pipe situated in the hatch n tp f the tank truck. It is pssible t estimate the energy f such sparks by cmbining the capacitance f the tank truck with the vltage n the tank truck at the time the spark is discharged. Capacitance is a measure f hw much charge can accumulate n the uter surface f the tank truck. Because tank trucks have a very large surface area, they can accumulate very large amunts f charge, which in turn, creates the presence f very high vltages n the surface f the tank truck. A truck with capacitance as little as 1000 pic-farads, that has been electrified t 30,000 vlts, has apprximately 450 millijules f ptential spark energy waiting t be discharged in the frm f a spark. Given that mst hydrcarbn vaprs and gases have MIEs f less than 1 milli-jule and mst cmbustible dusts have MIEs f less than 200 milli-jules, it s easy t see why tank trucks that d nt have static grunding prtectin in place can be a majr ignitin surce in a hazardus lcatin. The surface f the rad tanker takes up the charges (in red) f the charged liquid. T cunteract this risk, it is imprtant t ensure that the tank truck des nt have the capacity t accumulate static electricity. The mst practical and cmprehensive way f achieving this is t make sure that the tank truck is at grund ptential, especially befre the transfer prcess starts. When we describe grund ptential we mean that the tank truck is cnnected t the general mass f the Earth, which is cmmnly referred t, in electrical terms, as True Earth. This is because the general mass f the Earth has an infinite capacity t pull static charges frm the tank truck, which in turn eliminates the generatin and presence f vltages n the tank truck. As any static charges generated by tank truck lading (unlading) prcess will travel t grund via the Earth-Rite RTR, it is imprtant t ensure the itself has a lw resistance cnnectin t True earth. The knws it is cnnected t a verified earth grund. the will then establish and cntinuusly mnitr the cnnectin resistance between the tank truck and the verified earth grund is 10 hms r less. 10 hms is the benchmark requirement repeated in several internatinal Cdes f Practice, the mst prminent f which is the Natinal Fire Prtectin Assciatins s NFPA 77 Recmmended Practice n Static Electricity and the IEC s Explsive Atmspheres: Electrstatic Hazards - Guidance. If the resistance is nt mre than 10 hms the will indicate that the tank truck is cnnected t grund and indicate this via its grund status indicatrs, a cluster f green LEDs that pulse cntinuusly. 1 ensures it is cnnected t a 3 tank truck by assessing the electrical characteristic ensures the resistance between the tank truck and f the tank truck. the verified earth grunding pint is 10 hms r less.
