GENERAL ANNUAL NOW MEETING Almost 400 participants attended the plenary meeting of the National Innovation Program Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP) on December 5 and 6 in Berlin to hear news about current projects, results of finished projects, and EU funded projects in Germany. NOW Head Klaus Bonhoff in his opening speech explained that hydrogen technology is an energy transition technology which is useful not only in the domain of transportation. Bonhoff: Considering the integration of renewable energy into all fields hydrogen technology is system relevant and crucial for sect oral coupling. The past five calls for market activation projects in NIP 2 were successful; there was a lot of demand. But the real challenge is in the future. Bonhoff: NIP 2 and other programs for clean mobility have created a good foundation. But when we take the CO 2 objective for 2030 serious we must now start thinking in far bigger vehicle numbers. And the frame for these amounts must be designed now. PROGRESS IN MAKING GLOBAL STANDARDS The most important committee for making global standards for hydrogen technology is the TC 197 Hydrogen Technologies of ISO. It meets once a year to review the progress of the various working groups. The most recent meeting was held on December 6 and 7 in Vancouver (British Columbia, Canada). One of the most important topics is hydrogen refuelling stations. A couple of years ago the TC had decided on a rather ambitious work program. This was necessary because both users and legal bodies (in particular in Europe) demanded standards. So working groups for dispensers, valves, compressors, tubes, fittings and general requirements were created. This big agenda has mainly been finished. Most of the groups have submitted drafts which were approved by the TC and are now in the further process of voting. In some cases the groups used the Vancouver meeting to discuss last comments, as it was the case in the group on general requirements. MOBILE APPLICATIONS CUSTOMERS RECEIVE FIRST DAIMLER GLC CARS In November Mercedes Benz handed the first GLC F CELL cars to selected customers in Germany. The unique feature of the GLC F CELL is that it has both a fuel cell and a battery drive; the battery can be charged externally by means of Plug in technology.

Among the first customers in the German market were various ministries of the federation and some states, the National Hydrogen Organisation (NOW) and H2 Mobility as well as German Rail. Other parties which were to receive cars before the end of 2018 are companies like Air Liquide, Shell, and Linde AG and the cities of Stuttgart and Hamburg. (Daimler press release of 13. November 2018) FORKLIFTS MAKE PROGRESS More than forklifts and similar fuel cell vehicles are now working in storage houses of factories in the USA. They are refilled within a few minutes, have more power and do not create emissions in the buildings. This information was published by the Department of Energy of the USA (DoE) as Fact of the Month November. (DoE press release) NIKOLA TO PRESENT FUEL CELL TRUCK FOR EUROPE During an event next April Nikola Motors will present a truck prototype which is for the European market: the Nikola Tre. The vehicle will have an 800 V DC battery and a fuel cell for 120 kw. The only thing missing is the driver the truck will be suitable for automatic driving on level 5, which means completely without driver. The vehicle will be available in different configurations with ranges between 500 and 1200 km per tank filling. Test drives in Europe will begin in Norway around A production site is still looked for. The production of the vehicles is to begin in 2022 both in the USA and in Europe. At the same time the first Nikola refilling stations will be opened in Europe. Nikola will do this again with its Norwegian Partner Nel. (Nikola Motors press release of 5. November 2018) TOUGH TEST FOR MIRAI Every motor sports friend knows the Rallye Monte Carlo. Not quite that famous is the erallye Monte Carlo; it is for zero emission vehicles only. The third rallye of this type was held between October 24 and vehicles participated. 34 of them were battery electric. The others were Mirais from Toyota. To cut a long story short: all six Mirais made it to the end, and one of them was the winner. The others were on ranks 3, 6, 11, 21, and 27. One factor contributing to the good result may have been that the drivers were not required to compete for the charging stations and that the vehicles did not need hours for recharging. Refilling was done in the evening using a mobile station provided by Air Liquide. This covered even the longest leg of 390 km.

(Toyota France press release without date) INFRASTRUCTURE NEWS FROM EAST AND SOUTH GERMANY The German hydrogen refilling station network becomes denser and also starts growing into the surface of the country. The first station of the Leipzig region is operative since October 15 as part of TOTAL Autohof Poststraße. This is located right at the A14, but is easily accessible also from the airport and the A9. The hydrogen technology at the TOTAL station in Leipzig was delivered by Linde and makes it possible to serve some 40 vehicles per day. Since November 21 st there is also a station in the state of Saxony Anhalt. It is located at the A2 near Magdeburg, forming an important intermediate stop on the way from Berlin to Hannover. It is run by the Joint Venture H2 MOBILITY. In Munich hydrogen refilling stations are not such a sensation anymore, because on the same day as in Magdeburg the third station of Munich and the seventh in Bavaria was opened near the Highway Crossing Munich West (A8 / A99) on the ground of a Shell station at Verdistraße. Again technology was provided by Linde, and this station as well is run by H2 MOBILITY Deutschland. (CEP press releases of 21. November 2018) MASSIVE AIR LIQUIDE INVESTMENT IN CALIFORNIA Air Liquide will build a new hydrogen production in California which is meant in particular for the supply with hydrogen for energetic purposes. Building will start in early The company will invest some 150 M$. Refilling station operator FirstElement Fuel Inc has made an agreement with Air Liquide concerning delivery of renewable hydrogen. So FirstElement Fuel will be able to deliver 100 % renewable hydrogen to the customers of its refilling station grid and reach its goal to sell hydrogen without any greenhouse gas emissions. At this time FirstElement is running 19 stations under its True Zero brand, and 12 more are in the making. (Air Liquide press release of 26. November 2018)

GREEN MOBILITY FOR NORTHERN FRISIA The GP JOULE company group starts the biggest green hydrogen mobility project in Germany so far. efarm will create a hydrogen infrastructure comprising generation, processing and fleet use. In Northern Frisia (extending in N W direction along the German North Sea Coast) a green hydrogen supply safety of 100 % will be reached for people and companies which intend to buy a hydrogen vehicle. In order to stimulate demand and consumption five fuel cell cars will be bought and two buses which will used in regular scheduled service in the Northern Frisia county. Five electrolysers (225 kw each) will be installed for the production of hydrogen from wind power at suitable places neat to the wind parks and also close to the heating grids. The gas will be dispensed at two public refilling stations. The gas will be transported by truck to the stations in mobile storage containers. So the customers will be supplied with 100 % green hydrogen from the very beginning. (GP JOULE press release of 4. December 2018) PROGRESS CONTINUES IN VANCOUVER The Canadian company HTEC (Hydrogen Technology & Energy Corporation) has started building the second of six hydrogen refilling stations in the Vancouver area. It will be in Burnaby (ever heard of? Ballard is there!) and will be built together with Shell. The first Canadian station opened in June and is located right in the centre of Vancouver, also as part of a Shell station. The Burnaby station will start operating in early The planned network of six refilling stations will make it possible to use a first 1000 fuel cell cars in the province of British Columbia. (HTEC press release of 6. November 2018) STATIONARY APPLICATIONS START FOR WYHLEN PROJECT Hydrogen from green power can make mobility more climate friendly and also reduce emissions. But today it is still too expensive. A Power to Gas plant in the MW scale in the South German city Grenzach Wyhlen (near Basel) will pave the way to significant cost reductions. On November 15, 2018 the lighthouse project was formally started by Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister Kraut, state minister for economy. It is coordinated by the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden Württemberg (ZSW). The commercial part of the plant is run by the energy provider Energiedienst AG. Economy and research participate in the project for the future of mobility. The state of Baden Württemberg supports it with 4,5 M. The start of test runs for the hydrogen production was scheduled for November 2018.

The power comes right from a hydropower plant at Wyhlen, just a few meters away. So there is no grid transport and no fees for it. Since hydropower is a renewable power which is available at almost any weather the system can run more hours than plants based on wind or solar energy. This will further improve the efficiency. (ZSW press release of 15. November 2018) RESEARCH NEWS ELECTROLYSIS FROM THE TUBE Characteristic features of most electrolysers are the planar electrodes as places where the gases are generated. Necessarily? No in a project called Tubulyze (funded by the German Federal Ministry for Research) a configuration of nanostructured small tubes will be tested. The key element is an electrode made of porous titanium. Its surface will be nanostructured and covered with a very thin layer of catalyse, in this case Iridium. The cathode for the hydrogen generation will be a carbon fleece covered with platinum. An outer layer of the electrolysis tube made from an electrically conductive composite material serves as electron conductor. (Press releases of the University of Erlangen Nürnberg of 13. December 2018) ENERGY AND CLIMATE MORE GREEN POWER Renewable energies will probably have covered some 38 % of the gross electricity consumption in Germany in This is an increase of 2 % in comparison to In January, April und May renewables even achieved up to 43 % and foreseeably also in December. This are the results of a first estimate for the whole year 2018 made by the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden Württemberg (ZSW) and the Energy and Water Economy Association (BDEW). By the end of the year 2018 almost 229 billion kwh of power could have been generated from green sources. (Joint press release of 13. December 2018)

POLITICS PARLIAMENTARY EVENT IN THE CZECH EMBASSY Until recently the Czech Republic was not among the really important partners in hydrogen technology, but this may be changing. A clear indication for this was the willingness of the Czech embassy in Berlin to host a Parliamentary Evening of DWV which was held on November 8. Some 100 participants from politics and economy followed the invitation. In his opening speech Ambassador Tomáš Jan Podivínský stressed the importance which the topic now enjoys in his country as well. State, economy and private bodies cooperate and interact also with Germany on various levels. This left its mark also in the embassy: the ambassador referred to a Czech German expert meeting which had been held in the embassy on September 4. Oliver Wittke, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, represented the Federal government and promised further political and financial support for the field. Regions in which coal production has been abandoned (Lusatia, Rhineland, ) are good places for the development and production of fuel cells and electrolysers. And Mr. Wittke will probably like this, because in the ministry he is among other things the commissioner for structural change. BRITISH COLUMBIA TO ABOLISH ICE Zero emission Vehicles only will be allowed to be sold in the Canadian Province of British Columbia from 2040 onward. Prime Minister John Horgan announced that the government will introduce a draft law which sets targets of 10% ZEV sales by 2025, 30% by 2030, and 100% by The government will take additional steps to make ZEVs more affordable. Incentives of Can$ (4.000 ) will be offered for the purchase of a fuel cell car. At the other end of Canada the province of Québec has similar plans. (Announcement of the province government of 20. November 2018) WHAT ELSE HAVE WE FOUND FROM THE FRYING PAN INTO THE FIRE Because when the share of the fossil energies hard coal and lignite in power production further drops in the years to come we will see an increasing demand for power and energy generation from natural gas. (Peter Altmaier, Federal Minister for economic matters and energy, on October 26 in Ankara during a Turkish German energy forum) Remark: No comment. As hard as it may be.
