3 The Supergrid A pan-european transmission network facilitating the integration of largescale renewable energy and the balancing and transportation of electricity, with the aim of improving the European market". The Friends of the Supergrid is a group that have a special insight into the technology with a mutual interest in promoting and influencing the policy and regulatory framework required to enable large-scale interconnection in Europe 3

5 Developing Supergrid- Why? Boundary Conditions and Phases Today 2015 (Supergrid Preparation Phase) (Supergrid Phase 1) After 2020 (Supergrid Phase 2) Renewable energy starts replacing older coal fired power plants and nuclear (e.g. Germany) Large scale wind parks become connected ( ,000 MW) near shore using AC; far shore using DC The existing transmission system reaches its limits, planning is underway for system strengthening and expansion Studies (examples): Offshore Grid, Climate Foundation 2050 Road Map, North Seas Countries Offshore Grid, 2050 Electricity Highways, German NEP Further development of far shore bulk power wind parks (some 1,000 MW) Phasing out of coal fired and nuclear power plants continuous Balancing generation and load calls for stronger system integration on a European level To achieve the required flexibility of power flows and facilitate power trading, offshore wind parks are connected to one another and tapped into cross country links A common European Grid Code is developed providing a basis for pan-continental system planning The system integration process is continued leading to a European wide overlay grid. The overlay grid, mainly based on DC, is built to interconnect wind parks and pumped hydro storages in the North as well as large scale solar power plants in the South with the European load centres. Trans-continental power transmission is planned to connect to the solar power plants in the African desserts or to Eastern Europe and even Asia. 5

7 Challenges and Opportunities Large-scale utilization of renewable energies on an European level and a common electricity market require European transmission system integration (system planning & construction, regulation, operation) Technology is not a show-stopper but further development is necessary for competitive supply chains in the field of HVDC and offshore grids Funding schemes are an important contribution to support the development of innovative transmission solutions Innovative transmission solutions are a key factor for the European industry, that already accommodates the market leaders in HVDC, a large installed base and rapid development of production facilities 7

9 Recent key reports and activities towards the Supergrid First HVDC Grid Reports in final format from CIGRE and CENELEC Several new working groups started also this year on preferred voltage levels and functional specifications ENTSOE has started working on HVDC Grid Codes on directive from ACER EC E-Highway2050 project launched North sea off-shore grid (NSCOGI) first report German Grid Master plan VSC-HVDC is the choice for using overhead line corridors from North to South Swedish Grid Development plan with embedded and cross-country HVDC Grid connections North-South, West-East 9

10 Five-Year Scenarios for Developing Supergrid Pessimistic Intermediate Optimistic New harmonization, support schemes and a Supergrid business model will be delayed. Only regional DC can be planned and commissioned. New grid codes and harmonized support schemes in force. Several interregional onshore and offshore multi-terminal schemes are tendered. (Operation by ~2017) EU changes rules and regulations to promote formation of Supergrid. The first multi-terminal schemes taken into operation are prepared to be connected to each other in a larger pancontinental scheme. Technology development will be slow New technical improvements will come continuously. Developments have started To be pre-qualified for Supergrid operation, suppliers have taken a major step forward in voltage and power levels of VSC Transmission by

11 What can you do? Push for political support at National level Push for fast real implementation of the upcoming new regulation on TENs Harmonisation of regulatory frameworks /new regulation will be necessary? Support for large demonstration projects with all stakeholders involved Educate the public on the economic benefits of the Supergrid in terms of job creation and sustainability Ensure open markets for industry participation in the development, construction, ownership and operation of the Supergrid Engage the financial investment community to assist in structuring bankable projects that consumers can afford 11
