2 GENERAL WORLD OF ENERGY SOLUTIONS IN STUTTGART Hydrogen and fuel cells are steadily gaining importance; this is the impression of the organizers of this year s World of Energy Solutions after the end of the event. 100 exhibitors in the show presented new products and methods, 130 speakers participated in the parallel conference. News were shared about the installation of a grid of hydrogen refilling stations in Germany as well as about the use of fuel cells in planes and sea going vessels. A major event is planned for next year: WES will be held together with the 30. International Electric Vehicle Symposium & Exhibition. (Press releases of Peter Sauber Agentur) MOBILE APPLICATIONS BALLARD BUSES START OPERATION IN CHINA Ten more buses with fuel cells from Ballard have started operation in October in the city of Yunfu (province Guangdong). 12 others did so already in September in Foshan. The vehicles can take 80 passengers, ride more than 300 km with one tank filling, and consume 6.5 kg hydrogen per 100 km. (Ballard press release of 21. October 2016) The production of stacks for such buses and similar vehicles will soon happen in Yunfu as well. Ballard and the Guangdong Nation Synergy Hydrogen Power Technology Co. Ltd. ( Synergy ) agreed in late October on the creation of a Joint Venture for this purpose. Ballard holds 10 % of the company and delivers the MEAs. Production will start in late No details were given about the production volume, only that the MEAs to be delivered by Ballard over a period of five years will have a value of more than 150 M$. (Ballard press release of 25. October 2016) TOYOTA STARTET VERKAUF VON BRENNSTOFFZELLENBUSSEN Beginning in 2017 Toyota will start selling buses with fuel cell propulsion in Japan. After several successful field tests the transportation office in Tokyo will use two Fuel Cell buses in scheduled service.

3 The bus can also be used as external power supply system with a power of up to 9 kw and a capacity of up to 235 kwh. So the buses can serve as power source in emergency or disaster cases or for domestic purposes. (Toyota press release of 21. October 2016) ELECTRIC TRAINS WIRELESS Late next year the first fuel cell trains of the world will operate in German regional transportation. At the start two prototypes will connect the North German cities of Buxtehude and Cuxhaven; In 2020 there will be 14 trains there. The French manufacturer Alstom says that there is also the intention for using hydrogen trains in the states of North Rhine Westphalia, Baden Wuerttemberg, and Hessen. Alstom presented the new drive on the train technology fair Innotrans which started on 20. September in Berlin. According to the company the train called Coradia ilint is the first in the world which uses fuel cell technology. The prototypes to be used in Lower Saxony will also be the first in the world in real use. The trains were built in Salzgitter, with 8 M of support from federal funds. Hydrogen tank and fuel cells are mounted on the roof; the top speed is 140 km/h, the range up to 800 km. HY4 AIRBORNE The first official flight of the four seater passenger plane HY4 started on 29. September 2016 from Stuttgart airport. HY4 is the first four seater passenger plane in the world which is driven only by a hydrogen and fuel cell and battery system. The HY4 fuel cell plane was developed by the DLR (National Aeronautics and Space Research Centre) Institute for Technical Thermodynamics together with Hydrogenics, Pipistrel, H2FLY, the University of Ulm and Stuttgart airport as partners. The drivetrain comprises a hydrogen storage, a low temperature fuel cell and a high performance battery. The electric motor of HY4 delivers a power of 80 kw and makes a top speed of 200 and a cruising speed of 165 km/h possible. Depending on speed, height, and payload the range is between 750 and 1500 km. The maximum weight of HY4 is 1500 kg. Small passenger planes like HY4 might well soon be used in regional transport as Electric Air Taxis to be a flexible and fast alternative to existing means of transport. (Press release of 29. 4 INFRASTRUCTURE GROUND BREAKING AT ROSTOCK Ground breaking for the firste hydrogen refilling station in the state of Mecklenburg Western Pomerania and the tenth H2 station of TOTAL was done on 2. September at Rostock in the presence of state energy ministerchristian Pegel. An existing station in the district of Brinkmannsdorf will be extended with facilities for battery and fuel cell vehicles. The power for the charging points comes from wind turbines nearby, which are connected to an advanced buffer battery storage. But the hydrogen storage and the dispension of compressed hydrogen gas needs power as well. The production of the hydrogen, however, will not happen on site but in a power to gas facility elsewhere in the region. The gas will then be trucked to the station. The new hydrogen refilling station in Rostock belongs to the program for 50 such stations which is supported by the federal ministry of transport. The installation of a H2 infrastructure for Germany runs in parallel with the intended market introduction of fuel cells by European and Japanese car makers. September 2016) MORE STATIONS NEAR STUTTGART Hydrogen was available at the OMV refilling station at Metzingen (30 km south of Stuttgart, 7 km east of Reutlingen) since 26. September. The industrial partners Daimler, Linde, and OMV Germany continued there long term partnership within the Clean Energy Partnership (CEP) project and made another step to a hydrogen refilling station infrastructure serving the whole country. (Press release of 26. September 2016) Unfortunately the joy about the beautiful new station lasted only for one day. In the afternoon of 27. September a trailer truck belonging to a transport company entered the ground of the station to fill up. The driver did not take care; the hanger hit the hydrogen dispenser and damaged it so thoroughly that the technical components must be renewed completely. The good news: nobody was hurt. The safety measures of the station worked well. Station down, but nobody suffered was injured, there was no explosion, and also no report about great evacuation measures due to explosion danger. 5 STATIONARY APPLICATIONS EMERGENCY POWER FOR WIND TURBINES ENERTRAG Systemtechnik, builder of wind turbine parks, will integrate the fuel cell systems of new enerday from Neubrandenburg in its catalogue to offer them in the wind energy market under its own brand Gridion. The systems will serve for uninterrupted power supply as it is necessary for the lights of wind turbines in the buildung phase of when the grid is off. The fuel cells by new enerday run on ordinary propane as fuel. They can run up to 600 days with 8 operating hours per day. (ENERTRAG press release of 6. October 2016) PORTABLE APPLICATIONS FUEL CELLS AND PORTABLE POWER FOR SALE AT CONRAD SFC Energy AG, maker of stationary and mobile hybrid power solutions, has entered a sales partnership with Conrad Electronic SE, an important German retailer for electrical components and devices. From now on the EFOY COMFORT fuel cells and the mobile power module EFOY GO! for off grid power are available both in the shops and online on EFOY GO! has a weight of 5.8 kg and was developed specially for reliable and comfortable off grid power supply. The mobile plug can supply electrical devices everywhere. The devices are fitted to plugs with 230 V, 12 V or to two USB plugs. EFOY GO! Is charged either by means of the 12 V plug in the car, the 230 V plug at home, a mobile solar panel, or the EFOY COMFORT fuel cell. If you want such a system for your garden or similar all you need is between 2600 and 5500 for the fuel cell and some 900 for the GO! module. (SFC press release of 8. September 2016) RESEARCH NEWS BEST OF BOTH There are two types of PEM fuel cells, for high and for low temperatures. At the Los Alamos National Laboratory a new class of polymers has been discovered which can cover the whole

6 temperature range and is based on quaternary ammonium biphosphate ion pairs. This makes operating conditions possible which are off limits for common PEM cells. They can work between 80 and 200 C, with a degradation three orders of magnitude lower than that of ordinary high temperature PEM cells. Improved electrodes could improve power and endurance of the new cells even further. K. Lee et al., Nature Energy 1 (2016) 16120; doi: /nenergy POLITICS ECONOMICAL TALKS IN BERLIN A new round of the Economical Talks of DWV was held on 23. September in Berlin. Invited were (and most of them also came) a number of members of the federal parliament, in particular from the Economic Committee, as well as industry representatives. The topic this time was Reduction of greenhouse gas emission in refineries. Refineries consume a lot of hydrogen, and it appears reasonable to get the gas from power to gas facilities. But this green hydrogen makes economical sense only if it can also be used in the context of the legally required greenhouse gas emission reduction quota. Sounds simple, but is not in detail. There is a draft for the implementation of the relevant EU directive in German law which contains a few clauses which would kill sector coupling quickly and efficiently. This problem was presented to the politicians by DWV and industry. Obviously the message arrived. Formally the regulation in question does not need to be approved by the federal parliament, but even outside the formal competences there are close ties between parliament and government, and the ministries usually have an open ear for the comments from the members of parliament. NIP II READY TO START On 28. September the federal government has approved the program on hydrogen and fuel cell technology for the period 2016 to This starts the second phase of the successful National Innovation Program Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP). In NIP II the transport ministry only will spend almost 250 M between 2016 and M are available for funding of research, development, and innovation

7 The new guideline for the period 2016 to 2019 aims at technically mature products which can now enter into market competition as well as further extension of the hydrogen refilling station infrastructire. Funding can be applied for at once. (Communication of BMVI, nip II.html?nn=233160) FUKUSHIMA TO BE JAPANESE HYDROGEN CENTRE The Japanese prefecture of Fukushima is to play a key role in the creation of a Hydrogen Society. On 7. September the government published the Fukushima plan for a new energy society. Hydrogen from renewable sources like wind power will be produced in the region in large scale. The plan was created during a conference in Fukushima city which was attended by the economy, the ministry for trade and industry, the rebuilding agency, utilities, and other interested parties. The government agencies involved calculate expenses of some von 75,4 G (651 M ) for the project in the fiscal year The government will support it by funding new power transmsision lines along the coast and into the mountains so that the prefecture of Fukushima can become a centre for the use of renewable power. (Yomiuri Shimbun, 12. September 2016) BUNDESRAT AGAINST COMBUSTION MOTORS In a plenary session of 23. September the Bundesrat (state chamber of the German parliament) discussed recommendations of its committees an a communication of the European Commission on A European Strategy for low emission mobility. The recommendations were approved by the majority. Key points are: Taxes and and similar payments on vehicles and fuels are a suitable means to promote the transition to zero emission mobility, when they are similar all over Europe. Current taxation schemes of the member states must be enhanced with respect to their effect on the promotion of zero emission mobillty. Proposals on the efficient use of these tools are demanded with the objective that from 2030 at the latest only zero emission cars are registered in the whole EU. Bundesrat thinks that the complete electrification of public transport within EU offers great possibilities for climate protection. (Bundesratsdrucksache 387/16 (Beschluss))

8 WHAT ELSE HAVE WE FOUND LONG TIME AGO 50 years ago, in 1966, General Motors presented the Electrovan, the first fuel cell vehicle of the world. It was a little van which was loaded with technical components completely. The van was to be used as demonstrator in a PR event. The development of fuel cells had just received an important push by the NASA moon program. Later the vehicle disappeared in some storage facility for more than 30 years. In 2001 it was rediscovered and is now either in the GM Heritage Center or on display on shows about this topic. (GM press release of 5.
