5 NIP lighthouse projects Developing the Market through Cooperation and Networking Operation of fuel cell-powered vehicle fleets (buses and cars) and construction of 50 hydrogen refuelling points for vehicles in Germany by 2015 Over 500 fuel-cell heating appliances installed in the domestic energy sector Testing fuel cell systems to supply power onboard ships Secure and non-grid-connected power supply systems (approx. 300 sites established) Lighthouse projects play a mayor role in the further development of hydrogen and fuel cell technology. Germany's BOS digital public safety communications network includes 4,500 base stations The field test is also an important reference project for German exports of TETRA** network solutions incorporating fuel cells. * public safety agencies and organisations ** terrestrial trunked radio

14 Reference project: Brandenburg Digital Public Safety Communications (BOS). Why use fuel cells rather than a diesel-powered emergency power system? Requirement Hydrogen fuel cell Diesel-powered system 72-hour autonomous operating time Continuous refuelability Special case Scalability of power 3-10 kw can be ensured with an appropriate number of hydrogen cylinders The H2 cylinders can be exchanged or refilled during operation Appropriate arrangements are necessary and possible in the event of disaster situations Durch modular cascading sehr gut auf the required power abstimmbar. High efficiency ratio at partial and full load (> 50%). can be ensured with an appropriate sized tank The diesel tank can be refilled during operation Appropriate arrangements are necessary and possible in the event of disaster situations Usually overdimensioned Consequently: bad effiency (<15%) because of the partial load 230 / 400 V AC Using integrated DC/AC converter Using integrated synchronous generators Operation security Integrated outdoor cabinet available bis RC4 RC only possible with container High availability Adaptability to sitespecific situations Intrinsic: In standby mode a FC hardly ages and hydrogen do not age. System is simple and therefore unsusceptible, low-maintenance. Modular plant design allows a high range of configurations and an easy transport. Diesel engine and fuel wear in standby mode. Very suitable for compact storage of individual cylinders. Cabinets can be mounted side by side.
