1 THE PUGET SOUND ROCKET Newsletter of the Puget Sound Olds Club An Official Chapter of the Oldsmobile Club of America Best of Show Larry Genschorck s 1960 Olds Convertible took home the Best of Show trophy at the 25 th Annual Pacific Northwest Zone Show held at the Country Village in Bothell. Larry says the color of this tri-power Olds is NOT pink. In addition to Best of Show, Larry also took home the trophy for Best Custom. Congratulations, Larry. 45 cars and their owners braved the over 90 degree day to enjoy another Zone Show with the traditional picnic lunch. Your editors would like to thank Bill Iverson and Pat Ellwood for taking the photos of the cars at the show that appear in this newsletter on page 9. Here is an important note: The September Chapter meeting will be held on the SECOND Sunday because the first Sunday is on Labor Day weekend. Ned Peterson is the host for the September meeting and has booked a room at Barlee s Restaurant in Redmond for the meeting location. Driving directions can be found on page 8. Ned has a cruise to the car show in Edmonds after a short meeting. We are all very familiar with Edmonds as our Zone Show was held there for over twenty years at Frances Anderson Park. We had a small turn out this year around 45 cars; I did not get the exact count. Nothing earlier then 1950 was represented. Several cars from the 50 s, 60 s, and a few 70 s were on the show field. There were some very nice cars and everyone who did show up had a great time. It sure was hot, 90+ all day long, which might have had an impact on the turn out although the Sunday following our show the Pontiac had a show in the same location, same temp, and they had 150 plus cars show up. I had a number of people ask if it might be a good idea to combine our show with the Pontiac or Buick club to boost attendance. This will be a topic of discussion at future meetings. Thanks go out to Ed Straw and his wife Kathi for all their hard work in planning and setting up the show venue. Thanks to all of the club volunteers who helped set up the tents, solicit/provide raffle gifts, serve food and the many other things required to make the show a success. Without all of you it couldn t be done. The September meeting will be a breakfast meeting and cruise to the Edmonds car show hosted by Ned Peterson. Look for directions and more information elsewhere in this newsletter. Hope to have a great turnout. 3 BETWEEN THE BUMPERS By Ed Konsmo Can you believe that summer is just about over? There are still a few car shows and swap meets to be enjoyed. Check out some of them listed on pages 10 and 11 in this newsletter. Another Pacific Northwest Zone show is in the history book. The chapter members who attended the 25 th Anniversary show at the Country Village reported that Ed and Kathi Straw did a terrific job of organizing all of the day s festivities. Thank you Ed and Kathi! Your editors were not able to attend the Zone Show this year as we were in Reno checking out the site of the 2011 Nationals. The Nor Cal Olds Club, who are hosting the Nationals next year, have chosen what we believe is one of the best venues in recent years. The Grand Sierra Resort property could hold two Nationals at the same time if needed. The Resort is that large. The show field and the swap meet will be located next to each other. There is room for as many as 600 cars plus all of the vendors. The 27 story Grand Sierra Resort Hotel has 1900 rooms, a huge pool (with a sandy beach), a bowling alley, five great restaurants, a huge café, and a buffet with more food than you can eat in a week. The $69 a night rooms are great. If you wish to upgrade to one of the Sierra Grande II Suites, you will enjoy a full marble bath, 42 flat panel TV and a TV in the bathroom plus a bed that makes you want to sleep all day. All this for only $99 a night. Oh, I forgot to mention the casinos where they are happy to part you from your money. And, of course, there is the every present Starbucks for the latte fanatics. (Grand Sierra Resort photos on page 5). The 2010 OCA Nationals are history and the responsibility of my new position as Chief Judge is just starting. The phone calls and the s are coming in every day from OCA members across the country. I have a lot of respect for the job that Bob Casey did for 14 years as Chief Judge. Members are mailing, faxing, and ing their judging sheets with their concerns about how their car was judged. The biggest complaint is that too many points were taken off for a minor deficiency. In one case, 22 points were deducted for a small dent in the chrome trim on one member s car. This is what the Judging Committee is going to address this year. We hope to put in place for each category the maximum amount of points that can be deducted for a deficiency. The Buick and Pontiac Clubs have adopted such a process. Hopefully, it will make judging equal on the show field regardless what team is doing the judging. The Judging Clinic at the Nationals in Sturbridge was a great success. Nearly 100 judges were in attendance with many questions and concerns answered. The purpose of the clinic was to provide information to the new judges about what is expected of them on the show field. There were no complaints this year by the owners regarding inexperienced judges abusing their cars. That reason alone made the Judging Clinic a success. We have assembled a great Judging Committee consisting of Bob Casey, Chief Judge (ret.); Glenn Johnson, 2010 Meet Judge; Ken VanGundy, 2011 Meet Judge; Jerry Garfield, Master Judge; Chris Dreiling, 2006 Meet Judge and Clay Tober, Master Judge. This group of experienced judges will address the judging concerns of our members over the next year. Puget Sound Oldsmobile Club September

6 LeMay Museum News 33rd Annual LeMay Car Show & Auction Saturday, August 28th, 2010 The trucks pictured above were the feature vehicles for the 2010 Open House. About 10,000 car enthusiasts attended the 33 rd Open House. The weather was great and the show field at Marymount was filled to overflowing. The improvements that have been made to the show field at Marymount helped to make this event such a great success. It was great to see Don Wahlstrom with The Lady on display.
