1 THE PUGET SOUND ROCKET Newsletter of the Puget Sound Olds Club An Official Chapter of the Oldsmobile Club of America April 2013 For the chapter members that were not able to participate, the photo above was taken on Oct. 17, 2010 in Leavenworth, WA. This was a cruise that about eight members crossed over Stevens Pass for an afternoon of visiting shops. We had a great time and completed the day with a great lunch at a German restaurant. So the purpose of featuring this photo is to perhaps entice more members to participate in an organized cruise to an interesting destination in our state. Would you like to be involved? Our chapter president, Nina Rogers, is anxious to start cruising. We have so many places of spectacular scenery that it is a shame to not get in our Olds and hit the road. There are a number of members in our chapter that we never see. Perhaps the first Sunday meeting time each month is not convenient for you. Would you be willing to join in a cruise on a Saturday? Could we hear from you? If you are willing to go on a cruise somewhere in the Puget Sound region, please send your editor an . The upcoming April meeting should be a good one; we are trying to do something fun, as a group, after the meetings. I don t know yet what it will be. I ve asked Ed & Kathi to find something for us to do. Maybe a cruise, lunch, tour or???? If you have any ideas as to something you d like to do after one of our meetings, please let me know. We ll have our cars all clean and shinny, let s get our Oldsmobiles on the road so we can enjoy driving them, and showing them off. At the last meeting we discussed going to LeMay s again as a club. Ed K. has checked into this and it was discussed at the last meeting. I am still working on creating a club scrap book. I d like to get our members to send a photo of their car(s) with a short story on how they found it and what they had to do to get it up to snuff. Have you submitted your information yet? 6 MEETING MINUTES Meeting called to order by Nina Rogers, president. Treasurer's Report Kathi Straw Report approved. OLDSMOBILE CLUB OF AMERICA PUGET SOUND CHAPTER March 3, 2013 Minutes Minutes of the February meeting were approved. Car Club Calendars Kathi Straw Car club events calendars are available for $5. LeMay Museum Ed Konsmo Ed reported that the Club Auto has a room at the museum for meetings. Membership in the club costs $500 a year. He also checked on using the show field. To rent the entire field costs $2,000, one fourth costs $500. General admission costs $12. Groups of 50 tickets can be purchased for $10 each. A senior rate is available. Admission allows you to tour the museum for two hours. Parking costs $3. Saturday morning coffee time entry fee is $10, plus the parking fee. After discussion it was agreed we would go on our own and that Ed and Pam will work on setting a date. Fender Moldings Hugh Russell Hugh has a collection of fender moldings for 60's and 70's models available for free at his home. Zone Show Publicity Ed Straw The calendar stated there is no registration charge for the show. Ed has contacted the calendar and been informed they have had problems with the way show notices are entered into the calendar. Corrections to the calendar can be made. Checking the website to see if there any additions or corrections to postings in the calendar were recommended. It was moved, seconded and approved that Ed submit a correction to the calendar so that it would be as we had intended: The entry fee will be $15 in advance and $20 the day of the show. The entry fee will include lunch. Members had previously considered inviting other car clubs to participate in the show. Ed will contact the other clubs to inform them we had not made a decision to include them. 7 The Ghost Pontiac This is not an Oldsmobile but a piece of history of a sister car that needed to be shared. The 1939 Pontiac Deluxe Six "Ghost Car," first displayed at the New York World's Fair and later at the Smithsonian Institution, was sold Saturday for $308,000. Originally built for $25,000, the car with a Plexiglas body was the first transparent car built in America. Another was built the following year, but its whereabouts are unknown. "This is the only one known to exist," said Alain Squindo, a car specialist for RM Auctions, which held the auction for the "Ghost Car" and other specialty vehicles in Plymouth, Mich. "It's a very original car. "The Ghost Car was first displayed at the 1939/1940 New York World's Fair, Squindo said. It toured a number of dealerships, and then was at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. for a number of years. It has been owned by the same family since the 1980's. "They were rather sad to see their beloved car go," Squindo said. He could not disclose the name of the buyer. The car has 86 miles on it, picked up by being driven in and out of dealerships for displays. It was collaboration between GM and Rohm & Haas chemical company, which made the Plexiglas. Structural metal underneath was given a copper wash and all hardware, including the dashboard was chrome-plated. Billed as a vision of the future, it was made for the New York World's Fair, where it became a sensation at General Motors' 'Highways and Horizons" pavilion; and it continues to cause a stir today. Just two were ever made and this model, which has a three-speed manual transmission, is the last of its kind. Ghost Pontiac continued on page 8 Puget Sound Oldsmobile Club March

8 Ghost Pontiac continued Transparent: Wires and a spare wheel can be seen through the trunk of the car. A spokesman for RM Auctions said: "The car is in a remarkable state of preservation. It's a testament to the longevity of Plexiglas in an era when automotive plastics tended to self-destruct within a few years." Although it has acquired a few chips and cracks, it is structurally sound and cosmetically clear, showing off the Ghost Car's innards as it did in This motor still turns heads as much as it ever did. It is not, obviously, suited for touring but for touring but as a unique artifact from automotive and cultural history." The material went on to be used in military planes during World War II and then expanded in to signs, lighting, fixtures, trains and other cars. Rohm & Haas used drawings for the Pontiac four-door Touring Sedan to create an exact replica body out of the transparent acrylic. It was completed with structural metal underneath, which was given a copper wash, and chrome-plated hardware. Following a dealership tour, it went on display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. and was reportedly there until It was later owned by a succession of Pennsylvania Pontiac dealers. It appeared at the first annual meet of the new Pontiac-Oakland Club International in 1973 and was purchased by Don Barlup of New Cumberland, Pennsylvania. A PARTING SHOT This is what your Camaro looks like when you try to go over 200 MPH and roll the car eight times! The mandatory four point roll cage saved the life of the driver, Joe Honeycutt. Joe was attempting to better the fastest Camaro s record of MPH. Joe did suffer a concussion and a few lacerations but the roll cage and the required safety equipment saved his life.
