1 THE PUGET SOUND ROCKET Newsletter of the Puget Sound Olds Club An Official Chapter of the Oldsmobile Club of America September 2009 The 2009 Pacific Northwest Zone Show was a great success! The new venue at the Country Village in Bothell was given a thumbs up by all who attended. There were close to 60 cars in attendance including six cars from our sister B. C. Olds Club. In addition to the Canadian cars, there were quite a few new faces and bumpers attending the show. The overall consensus was that we should have the show here again next year. The award winners were for Best Cruising Car, Jim and Nina Rogers with their 60 Olds; Best Interior, Marlene Smith, 57 Olds 88 ; Most Likely to Get a Ticket, Henry Peters, 70 Ralley 350; Best Custom, Kevin Dagel, 38 Olds; Best Project Car, Kevin Dagel, 62 Starfire; My Favorite Olds, Ed and Kathi Straw, Convertible. A special thanks to all of the chapter members who worked tirelessly to make the show a success. You all know who you are! What a fantastic Zone Show. There were so many members we don t get to see very often and so many outstanding Oldsmobiles. It was difficult to vote, they were all so nice. I ve received several s and telephone calls from folks telling me how much they enjoyed the car show. Among the things that are being mentioned are: the new location was great and some stated that having the show on Saturday, instead of Sunday, was a great idea. We re so lucky to have such dedicated members who put their hearts into this car show. I thank each and every one of you for all your help and support. Thanks to you all!!! Nina says he ll remain in the hospital until he gets back on his feet. He plans to be at the September meeting. We know he s a fighter, and we all wish you well, Jim. 3 BETWEEN THE BUMPERS By Ed Konsmo This month the feature of Between the Bumpers is literally between the bumpers of the Airflow Club s display of cars at the 32 nd Annual LeMay Open House on Saturday, August 29. The feature restoration for the 2009 LeMay Open House is a 1937 Chrysler Airflow. There were more than twenty Chrysler and DeSoto Airflows on display from the Western U. S. and Canada who were invited to compliment the featured car. The Airflow was built from 1934 to 1937 with an aerodynamic design that unfortunately was not well accepted. In addition to being the first truly modern automobile the Airflow s design had the rear seat passengers sitting in front of the rear axle instead of riding over it. This provided a much smoother ride. The body design looked much like a unibody but was really a cage-type inner structure with beam and truss design. Among other features of this advanced concept were flush headlights, hidden radiator, and flow-thru ventilation. Truly a car ahead of its time! Puget Sound Oldsmobile Club September
