1 THE PUGET SOUND ROCKET Newsletter of the Puget Sound Olds Club An Official Chapter of the Oldsmobile Club of America May 2013 Across America in a Curved Dash Olds It s steered by a tiller. Its single-cylinder engine makes 4-1/2 horsepower, enough to propel the vehicle to a heady 25 MPH. Suspension is by horse-andbuggy leaf springs, with no shock absorbers. There s one brake, which acts on the differential. The engine is lubricated by a total-loss oiling system that requires periodic topping up, and the gas tank holds a paltry four gallons. Aside from its minimal toe board, there is no crash protection whatsoever. For these and other reasons, a century-plus-old Curved Dash Oldsmobile might not be your first choice for a transcontinental drive. And so we salute Joy Rainey, who will climb aboard her 1904 Oldsmobile Model 6C at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, in Oceanside, California, intending to drive to Daytona Beach, Florida, 2,826 miles away. Joy, a Briton, is taking on the 32-day drive in memory of her former partner, Trevor Hulks, and to raise money for Cancer Research UK. The effort is called Joy Across America. Well, Jim, I and Ed Konsmo showed up for a look at all of the wonderful cars. Where were the rest of you? They sure have a lot of cars in the Museum; we toured three floors of cars on display plus a nice café and shop. I think that the oldest on we saw was a Thanks, Ed for showing us around. At the club meeting we talked about going to the Ford Picnic on June 2 instead of the regular meeting. If we do, be sure to bring your lunch. More information will be shared at the May meeting. I am still looking for those photos of your cars to put in an album and a story about your car. Well, the sun has come out and the weather for Sunday looks very good. How about joining us at the Newport Way Library at 1pm Sunday? Nina Rogers President PSOC Website: DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTAL TO THE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER: Information to be considered for submittal in to the newsletter needs to be received by the 25th of the month. 3 BETWEEN THE BUMPERS By Ed Joy across America continued from front page. Joy is accomplished in the world of motorsports, having competed in circuit races, hill climbs and long-distance rallies, including the 10,000-mile London to Sydney Marathon in a 1970 Morris Minor in 2004 and the 6,000-mile Carrera Sudamericana in a Jeep Grand Cherokee two years later. She s also a regular participant in the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, which she and her mechanic, Mark Riley, used last year as a test run for the Oldsmobile. (The photo above shows her with Mark Riley, left, main sponsor, Jim Carr of Durite, and mechanic Nick Cooper.) Joy s route will take her across California through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana and Florida. Though the Oldsmobile s performance makes Interstate travel out of the question, there s no avoiding the scorching deserts and 6,500-foot mountains of the Southwest, which she and her team expect will limit her progress to as little as 56 miles in a day. Trevor and I were intending to make this journey together in 2009, but I put it off because he fell ill, Joy told the Evesham Journal. Now it feels like unfinished business. Trevor s cancer spread very quickly so I feel passionately about raising funds to research metastasis cancer spread. You can follow the trip through Facebook, Twitter and a blog on the Joy Across America website. Oldsmobiles were first manufactured by the Olds Motor Vehicle Company in Lansing, Michigan, a company founded by Ransom E. Olds in In 1901, the company produced 425 Curved Dash Oldsmobiles cars, making it the first ever high-volume automobile manufacturer producing a non-expensive motorized vehicle for the masses. The CDO s were produced until 1907 with approximately 19,000 built in total. Olds became the top selling car company in the United States for a few years. Ransom Olds left the company in 1904 and the company was bought by General Motors in Puget Sound Oldsmobile Club May

If you have something interesting to report, please send an to your editor at or call and leave a message, ********* CHAPTER ANNOUNCEMENTS! ********* The May Chapter meeting will be at the Newport Way Library at 1 PM. At the April chapter meeting, the members discussed attending the Ford Picnic instead of the regular chapter meeting. There appeared to be some confusion about the date. The Ford Picnic is in JUNE, not May. We will have our May meeting at the Newport Way Library.. Kathi Straw, Chapter Membership Person, notified your editor that a number of chapter members have not renewed their chapter dues. As of the writing of this newsletter the members listed below have not sent in their 2013 chapter membership dues. If you do not plan to renew, please send an to Kathi at ekstraw@comcast.net. Dan Davids Rick Dickson Dann Gadbois Bob Gaunt Doug Gillmer Charles Harman Garry Hart Lauren Hendricks Bill Keller Crystal Lees Don Osais Jack Kemp Eric Seward Didrik Wallis Jon White Jeff Winter David Yonich David Zimmerman Our Chapter President, Nina Rogers, desires to put together a photo album of the chapter member s cars. Nina would like you to send a photo of your car and how you obtained it. Better yet, bring it to a chapter meeting. 6 MEETING MINUTES Meeting called to order by Nina Roger, president. Minutes of the March meeting were approved. OLDSMOBILE CLUB OF AMERICA PUGET SOUND CHAPTER APRIL 7, 2013 M I N U T E S Treasurer's Report Kathi Straw Report approved. LeMay Museum Discussion continued regarding the museum. Saturday, April 13, some members of the club plan to meet at 12 noon at the museum. Ed Konsmo had received a call from a representative of another Olds club telling about a successful come one, come all car show that had been held. Members agreed to explore the possibility of our holding such a show. The LeMay museum could be a possible site. It was also recommended we participate in the Twin City Idlers' car show June 30. Their show attracts hundreds of participants. It was suggested we have flyers for our zone show to hand out at the event. We would have to make a decision by October. May 5 Meeting/Ford Picnic It was decided to meet at the Albertson's/Rite Aid parking lot which is at the same exit as Newport Library 9:30-9:45 a.m., so we can drive into the Bellevue College campus together. Bring your lunch or buy food on campus. Ed Konsmo will check the weather forecast for the day. We will cancel going to the picnic if it rains. If it rains, we will meet at the Newport Library at 1 p.m. Zone Director Position Erik Martinson Erik reminded members he will be retiring next year and he will be giving up his position and we need to be thinking of a replacement. 7 TUCKER COLLECTOR PASSES To own just one Tucker takes a certain amount of luck and determination. To own three along with the world s most extensive collection of Tucker memorabilia, Tucker mechanical parts, and most of the Tucker engineering drawings takes dedication, and nobody in the world showed more dedication to the marque than collector David Cammack, who died Sunday at the age of 85. As David LaChance related in his profile of Cammack in the June 2007 issue of Hemmings Classic Car, Cammack got his first glimpse of a Tucker in 1948 at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. Cammack, then a teenager, had gone to see the prototype, known as the Tin Goose, and its massive 589-cu.in. flat-six engine, but lost interest in the car when the company failed. It wasn t until 1972 that Cammack, by then a successful real estate investor, bought his first Tucker, number The other two numbers 1001 and 1026 came in quick succession over the next couple of years, but almost more important than the cars were the ephemera that came with them or that Cammack later bought: one of two Tucker test chassis, a variety of prototype and production Tucker/Air-cooled Motors engines, and about 50,000 blueprints for just about every component that made up a Tucker. I don t think there was any doubt that (Preston Tucker) was serious about building a car, Cammack told us for the profile. I think all these drawings provide that. Over the years he had made attempts at cataloging the entire collection of blueprints and engineering drawings going so far as to hire assistants for that task but about 90 percent of the collection reportedly remains uncataloged.
