1 THE PUGET SOUND ROCKET MARCH 2007 Newsletter of the Puget Sound Olds Club An Official Chapter of the Oldsmobile Club of America April 2007 Visiting the LeMay Museum Harold and Nancy LeMay amassed the largest privately owned collection of automobiles, motorcycles, trucks, other vehicles and related memorabilia in the world. Today you can view this national treasure over 300 vehicles at the grounds of historic Marymount Academy. Almost every year and brand sold in America during the 20 th century is represented from the early brass era through the muscle cars of the 1970 s. On display are familiar names: Ford, Chevrolet, Buick, Chrysler, Oldsmobile, Cadillac, Dodge, Mercury, and Pontiac as well as those from a storied past such as Tucker, Packard, Kaiser, Pierce Arrow, LaSalle, Studebaker and Hudson. These are just a few of the many classics you can see at the LeMay Museum. On the last Saturday of August every year, the Annual LeMay Open House is held for the public. This is a great opportunity as a car enthusiast for you to volunteer your time to help. It is a great experience! You can view this unique and magnificent collection at the historic Marymount Academy located just 35 minutes from downtown Tacoma. There are docent guided tours led Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm or earlier during the winter season. Reservations are recommended by calling or online The museum is located at nd Street E, Tacoma, WA if you wish to Mapquest for directions. 2 Puget Sound Olds Club 2007 BOARD OF DIRECTORS President Nina Rogers Vice President Ed Straw Secretary Mary Lindholm Treasurer Kathi Straw Membership Chairman Bill Iverson Newsletter Editor Ed Konsmo Assistant to the Editor Pam Konsmo Chapter Representative Peter Salazar President s Message April is here, but where is the sun? Car show time is getting near. Are you ready? I would like us to get together for some of these car shows and all go as a club and show some support for the Olds club. That just might be fun. I was reading a magazine Jim gets (Hemmings Classic Car) and found some information I would like to share with you. Who's Next At GM? It's been suggested, for quite some time, that either Buick or Pontiac is close to joining Oldsmobile and Plymouth in the automotive graveyard. While they are just rumors, recent news suggests that Buick, scheduled to celebrate its 104th year as an automaker in 2007, will sell more cars at years end in China than the US. In the first 10 months, Buick sold 218,603 vehicles in China compared to it's 206,582 in domestic sales. With such a storied history, will GM keep the lifeline attached, or eventually pull the plug? While this news might not have an effect on the hobby immediately, can this signal a rise in demand for old Buicks as much like the sharp increase of Oldsmobile s on the market after that automaker's swan song? Good Bye Lansing Landmark? Is the last vestige of GM's Oldsmobile passing into that good night? According to a few threads found on the old Oldsmobile headquarters, Building 70, in Lansing, Michigan is scheduled to be torn down shortly. The writers and responders to the threads have suggested that there should be an effort underway to try and save the building so it can be used as a new location for the Reo/Oldsmobile Museum. Others think they should keep the 15-foot high letters, but it may be too late. It s also been reported that the building is not as structurally sound as it once was. Meaning any hope of its restoration might be costly. Nina OCA BOARD MEMBERS Ed Konsmo, OCA Vice President Erik Martinson, PNW Zone Director Sherry Soball, PNW Zone Director WELCOME NEW MEMBERS! 3 Continued from Page 1 VISITING THE LeMAY MUSEUM The LeMay Museum s permanent home will be in downtown Tacoma, adjacent to the Tacoma Dome, with a scheduled opening in Quoting the LeMay Museum Board of Directors, Forget everything you know about car museums. America s Car Museum will be unlike anything you ve every experienced, anywhere. We began with the world s largest private collection, over 3000 cars, motorcycles, trucks and countless items of memorabilia, amassed over a 40 year period by Harold E. LeMay. With the generous support of the LeMay family and the City of Tacoma, AMERICA S CAR MUSEUM has secured a prime location on the southern edge of Tacoma s historic museum and waterfront district. The landmark site, adjacent to the Tacoma Dome, is highly visible and easily accessed from I-5. The design of The Museum is bold, striking and spectacular! We envisioned and designed a campuscomplex that is destined, in and of itself, to become a world-class architectural attraction. The site is dominated by a titanium-finish glass exhibition pavilion its sweeping curves mimic the hood scoops and body panel shapes of classic automobiles. Inside, function emerges from the form as an airy and a spacious atrium gives way to a dramatic, spiral exhibition structure. This impressive tower soars four stories above and descends four stories below ground level. A cluster of adjacent buildings house administrative offices, an education center, retail and dining areas, club rooms, interactive rides, restoration shops, private vehicle and LeMay collection storage - all flanking a 5 acre grass show field, perfect for club gatherings, car shows, swap meets, an annual concours and top notch auction. Beautiful landscaped grounds and ample parking complete the picture. The LeMay Museum s permanent home is currently scheduled to be completed and open in Puget Sound Oldsmobile Club April

4 BETWEEN THE BUMPERS - By Ed Konsmo The other day as I was thinking about our car hobby and the fact that we are now an orphan car, some interesting facts came to mind. Do you realize how much the Oldsmobile brand that we collect contributed to the auto industry? The Oldsmobile factory used the moving assembly line in 1904, a decade before Henry Ford created his own. Oldsmobile was a pioneer in using a V-8 in their 1915 Model 44. It proved to be a huge success with more than 8,000 sold in that year. In 1935, Oldsmobile featured the allsteel turret top when other cars were still using a fabric top. In 1937 (I was a year old), the Safety Automatic Transmission was introduced, the first shiftless transmission. Even though it was a Buick Division product, it would not be offered in their cars until It would be followed in 1940 by the HydraMatic, the first truly automatic transmission in an automobile. In 1949, the Futuramic Rocket V-8 was introduced. This was what we would today refer to as a Muscle car. The 1949 Olds 88 won six of the nine NASCAR races held that year. Then in 1964 Olds answered the Pontiac GTO with the option and the muscle car race was on.. In 1966 the front-wheel drive Toronado was introduced. The first major production FWD car since the Cord in the 30 s. As we all know, it was a huge success and today is very collectible. We in the Oldsmobile Club of America have every reason to be proud of the Oldsmobiles that we polish and parade every chance we have. Keep those Rockets lit! NEXT MEETING, Sunday April 1, 2007 The next meeting of the Puget Sound Olds Club will be held on Sunday, April 1 st, at the Redmond Library at 1:00 p.m. IMPORTANT NOTICE!! The chapter is attempting to assemble ALL of the items that are used for the Annual Zone Show at Edmonds. The host hotel is sold out and many of the surrounding hotels are quickly filling. There are a number of the Puget Sound Olds Club members planning to make the trip. It would be great if we could arrange a caravan from the Pacific Northwest. Let s discuss it at the next chapter meeting. Puget Sound Oldsmobile Club April

6 HERE S OUR RIDE! - By Bill and Judy Iverson IT S STILL IN THE FAMILY It s not my father s Oldsmobile, as the ad campaign says. For me, it s my father-inlaw s Oldsmobile that is now my pride and joy. The 1967 Olds Cutlass was purchased new by Judy s father George Billiaert. I went along with George when he purchased the car from Riach Oldsmobile in downtown Seattle. In 1979, George decided to buy a new car and gave the Cutlass to us, to be used primarily by my daughter as transportation to school and college. But because my daughter did not get her license for many years I used the Olds as daily transportation to work. The Olds had to be parked outside in the weather because other newer cars were in the garage. The weather took its toll on the car and rust spots appeared in the paint and holes were rusted out behind all four wheels. A decision had to be made whether to fix up the car or to junk it. In 1988 the Cutlass received a new paint job and had all the rust spots taken care of. It also received an all new interior: carpets, upholstery, headliner, door panels repainted, dash and metal door trim repainted. In 1995, the engine, transmission and differential were all rebuilt. Since then, we have taken the Cutlass to many Oldsmobile shows and cruise-ins, and have caravanned the car to many of the Fall Rallyes. In 2005, at the Oldsmobile Club of America Nationals in Seattle, the Cutlass earned a first place in the judging. Judy says we will never sell the Cutlass, It s a keeper!
