2 Volume 25 Issue 2 Fall 2018 Editor s Note Inside this issue: Editors note 2 Mike Kidd Wow, what a busy spring/summer. It seems like winter just ended and we re already into fall. I kept busy getting my Firebird ready for paint, and then taking my first attempt at painting a car. It took some creativity in the garage to get the airflow and keep the bugs and dust out but I am really happy with the result. See 70 Firebird project article for details. On a more somber note, the club regrets to announce the passing of club member and important part of Pontiac s history, Tom Goad. Details are linked below: We would also like to extend our condolences to the Schiffer family, as Janis s mother also passed away. 70 Firebird Project Part 2 SAAC-MCR Trans Am Celebration Woodward Dream Cruise Vintage Article Random Pontiac Pics Club Calendar Lots of great events this year, from the Detroit Grand Prix, concourse and Woodward Dram Cruise to many other great events around the area, I didn t quite make the dream cruise, but I did make a fun Trans Am series celebration, which is captured in an article as well. Our annual club cider mill cruise is coming up fast, planning for 10am on Sat Nov 10th at the Franklin Cider Mill. Autorama will be here before you know it. If you haven t heard there is a new Pontiac museum coming to Pontiac MI. Upcoming Events: Nov 10th Club Meeting 10am at Franklin Cider Mill Also, Lapeer drag way has a new owner who has redone the track. We hope to potentially set up an event there next year. The track was repaved, and the fencing and return road area s were also redone, with more improvements still planned looks like a must see. Happy Fall, Mike
3 Royal Pontiac Club of America Fall 2018 Newsletter Page 3 Winter Car Project: 1970 Firebird Part 2 Mike Kidd Well I didn t quite make the dream cruise with the Trans Am project, but I did make the Shelby American Club s Trans Am celebration at Waterford Hills along with fellow club member Steve Lemieux on Labor day weekend. If you recall In the last article, we were busily working on the lower quarters, trunk extensions, and rocker area. Well it got a lot more fun before the metal work was done. Both quarters had been skinned and sat slightly proud of the doors, so a little surgery was required to correct the door fitment. We made cuts both in the shut face and down the quarter to level out the sheet metal to the door. Once we got the metal close it got stitch welded and the welds were ground flush. Since there s no guarantee every pin hole is filled we put a coat of fiberglass filler over the weld areas before any regular body filler was used to bring the final shape to the panel. New roof section after fitment Body solder on hood
4 Page 4 Royal Pontiac Club of America Fall 2018 Page 4 Winter Car Project: 1970 Firebird Part 2(cont d) Mike Kidd Next up was the roof, what looked to be some small pinholes was actually a previous repair coming through. Rust had been ground out and body filler added, we had to cut a portion of the roof out on both sides. Luckily I was able to find a suitable donor roof in Vassar. It was an adventure as the Saturday I went up it was snowing like hell. A 100 foot extension cord, my 4 1/2 angle grinder and my mask and welding gloves allowed me to make quick work of the roof once I cleared the snow off it. As we didn t want to weld in the center of the roof, Andrew recommended a 3M product made specifically for repairs where you can t weld. It s a 2 part epoxy you apply to both the pieces using a substantial lap joint. So after fitting the panel, we welded the edges and stuck down the epoxy, we used sheet metal screws to ensure we got a good bond. Once we had the repair done, we had to re body solder the quarter/roof joint. The new solder went in fine, and after some work with the body file looked really good. The work however, had just begun, with a seemingly never ending cycle of fill/sand/ repeat until the guide coat OK d the surfaces. While the roof took untold hours of sanding and blocking, I couldn t be happier with how it came out. It looks like the roof and quarters are one continuous stamping. We ended up touching every panel on the car, even the
5 Royal Pontiac Club of America Fall 2018 Newsletter Page 5 Winter Car Project: 1970 Firebird Part 2(cont d) Mike Kidd new hood I bought required some body solder to correct the hood/nose gap on the passenger side. As we progressed I guess we raised the bar a bit, previously OK panels (trunk and filler panel) were also deemed NOK and blocking and some more cutting and welding were done on those panels as well. Along the way, we decided we would paint the car in my garage. After many coats of primer and final blocking/ spot putty we were ready to start spraying. Garage paint booth Paint is done, Thanks Andrew! We started with the spoilers to get me some practice with the gun. Well after the 1st couple looked great I was just brimming with confidence, and promptly put some large runs in the mirrors and center spoiler. As my compressor and gun were limited in capacity, we panel painted the car. It was great finally seeing the color hit the car after hundreds of hours preparing for it. It turned out that the best time to paint was to start around 4am, avoiding the August heat. It was a little tough at work that week, as it took several days to complete the car spraying it in sections. The garage conversion to a spray booth actually worked pretty well, as we didn t have too many problems with dust or bugs. To complete the paint job, some wet sanding and polishing was required, but that actually went pretty fast.
6 Page 6 Royal Pontiac Club of America Fall 2018 Page 6 Winter Car Project: 1970 Firebird Part 2(cont d) Mike Kidd Once the paint was complete, there was a lot of assembly and cleaning to do. Luckily family and friends pitched in to help me get the final items wrapped up in time to make the Shelby club s annual Trans Am event at Waterford. It felt great to get the car out on the track and back on the street. The following weekend we caravanned up to the Frankenmuth Auto fest with friends. Glad to have it back on the road, and glad to be done sanding! Looking forward to my next project. Special thanks to Andrew, Aleta, Dad, Fred and Phil end

This is a great event for fans of the original race series and a great way to enjoy your classic pony car. You can participate in the parade and touring laps on the track, and even take the track for some hot laps if you re so inclined. Let me know if you re interested in participating in 2019.

It s a great location and the weather was awesome as well. As I mentioned my Firebird wasn t quite ready, but my dad brought his 49 Studebaker Champion, so we still had a great day with the club.
