1 The S Coupe Express Willamette Chapter SDC January/February, 2019 The S Coupe Express is published bi-monthly and updated as needed. Jean Lasseter, Editor This newsletter is also posted at our chapter website. A new year, 2019, and we are looking forward to tours, activities, renewing friendships and making new friends as we get our Studebakers on the road as soon as nice weather permits. I want to thank past 2018 board members for faithfully handling those positions. Past board members were: John Lasseter, President Bert McDade, Vice President Treasurer, Pam McDade Glenn Wilson, Membership chairman Welcome new board members. Jean Lasseter, editor Page 1 of 8

B.S. Column Stromberg Model WW 2 barrel carburetors were the standard equipment carburetors used on Studebake V-8 engines from 53 through 64. The 53 through 58 versions were for the tall intake manifolds and thus had the easily recognized rear facing upper air horn and matching air cleaner connection, as needed for hood clearance. In 1959, a redesigned, lowered intake manifold allowed proper hood clearance with an air cleaner that fit directly on top of the carburetor. The WW carburetors used from 59 through 64 were similar but not necessarily interchangeable. The first version as used on 59 through 61 are recognized in that the automatic choke housing is on the upper part of the carburetor. This style also has a clamped on air cleaner adapter, firmly clamped to the carburetor by a V shaped cross section clamp. The versions (number stamped on the upper casting above the fuel inlet) are WW6-123, 6-123A, 6-123B, and 6-125B. There are minor differences in the main discharge jets and a couple of other small pieces, but the above numbers can be considered to be interchangeable. Page 2 of 8
3 Then, for the 62 (and later) versions, the automatic choke housing was moved to the bottom (throttle body casting. Changes to the upper (air horn) casting included revising the air cleaner mounting stud - now a formed rod piece that captured the mounting stud, and simply clipped on to the air horn. The 1962 models were WW6-127, 6-127A, 6-128, and 6-128A. Lastly, the variations - essentially the same as the 62 carburetors except having a fitting on the rear of the throttle body casting to accept a rubber hose for the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system. These carbs are WW6-130, I have seen the carburetors randomly interchanged, which can be done - but you need the correc auxiliary pieces. The mounting pattern, the fuel inlet location, and the. throttle linkage location is all the same. The obvious differences - the choke housing location high or low - can be accommodated by using the proper tube connection to the choke housing. You must have the correct air cleaner mounting stud for the carburetor. Clamp on for or formed wire for If you have a 63 or 64, you must use the late carburetor with the PCV hose connection fitting. But, if you are using carburetor on an earlier engine, you may just plug the hose fitting. Always be sure to use the proper base gasket with any of these WW s. There will be an open notch at eac venturi opening. This supplies vacuum to allow the choke system to operate. *********************** ************************* The following is reprinted with permission of Pete Yuen Page 3 of 8
4 Odds N Ends * We can t help everyone, but everyone can help someone. Ronald Reagan * How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life you will have been all of these. George Washington Carver ********** Police Emergency This is the true story of George Phillips of Meridian, Mississippi, who was going to bed when his wife told him that he d left the light on in the shed. George opened the door to go turn off the light but saw there were people in the shed in the process of stealing things. He immediately phoned the police, who asked Is someone in your house? And George said no and explained the situation. Then they explained that all patrols were busy, and that he should simply lock his door and an officer would be there when available. George said, Okay, hung up, counted to 30, and phoned the police again. Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people in my shed. Well, you don t have to worry about them now because I ve just shot them all. Then he hung up. Within five minutes three squad cars, an Armed Response unit, and an ambulance showed up. Of course, the police caught the burglars red-handed. One of the policemen said to George: I thought you said that you d shot them! George said, I thought you said there was nobody available! Applied Technology: Tire Pressure Sensors Some of the newer cars have been equipped with the tire pressure sensors for a number of years now. The sensors are in essence, a transmitter/pressure gauge that sends data to the car s computer. They are not cheap, priced at between $75 and $150 each. The projected life expectancy is 10 years of the built in battery life but some are known to have failed in as little as 4 years. The batteries cannot be taken out and replaced so the whole unit has to be replaced. As if this is not bad enough, some of the sensor units are made of aluminium and break easily as a person tries to remove them in order to add more air into the tire. They are not repairable so a new sensor needs to be installed. It can be presumed that many motorist will consider the sensors as a bit of frivolous equipment but nowadays, the cars that are equipped with them are considered to have them built in as part of the safety system and operating a vehicle with one sensor missing is considered as circumventing the safety system. Not a good idea as viewed by law enforcement and the insurance underwriters. In the case of a motorist deciding to purchase a new set of wheels for the winter tires, he would need to purchase sensors for each of the tires. Apparently, a motorist did want to purchase a new set of tires and wheels for his car that was equipped with the sensors and did not want to purchase the sensors. The shop had the customer sign a liability waiver form. The car was later, involved in an accident and still, despite the motorist having signed the liability waiver, the court decided that the tire shop, operating as a business professional, should have known not to have equipped the wheels without the sensors and thereby circumventing the built in safety feature. It is said that the tire shop had to pay a hefty amount to satisfy the claim in court. Life is much simpler with Studebakers. Lucky you! ************ Love is when the other person s happiness is more important than your own. H. Jackson Brown, Jr. ************ Be kind to your Studebaker.
