Position rive unit stright k. Remove fill p from power steering pump n hek flui level with ipstik. 2. A Quiksilver Power Trim n Steering Flui or Dexron II, s require, to ring flui up to orret level. Engine Wrm from Opertion - Reommene Flui Level Engine Col (With engine not running), turn the steering wheel t moerte rte, k-n-forth, to en of trvel in eh iretion, pusing eh time t en of trvel for few seons to llow ny ir to ule from pump reservoir. Do this minimum of 5 omplete yles. Rehek flui level n if neessry. 4. Reinstll fill p. CAUTION DO NOT operte engine without wter eing supplie to sewter pikup holes in ger housing. Overheting mge to engine my result. 5. 13 SERVICE MANUAL NUMBER 11 POWER STEERING 6. Prtilly open wter tp (pproximtely 1/2 mx.) n llow wter to enter ooling system. DO NOT use full wter tp pressure. 7. Strt engine n run t ile. During this time, turn steering wheel k-n-forth to en of trvel in eh iretion severl times. 8. Position rive unit so tht it is stright k n then stop engine. Remove fill p from pump. Allow ny fom in pump reservoir to isperse, then hek flui level n flui, if neee. DO NOT OVERFILL. Reinstll fill p n tighten seurely. 9. If flui ws fomy in previous step, repet steps 7 n 8 until flui oes not fom n level remins onstnt. Blning Power Steering Control Vlve IMPORTANT: Control vlve is lne y the mnufturer n shoul not require further justment. However, if rive unit tens to reep in one iretion or the other (with engine running, rive unit in neutrl, n hns off the steering wheel), the ontrol vlve MUST BE lne s expline following. 1. Ensure engine is off. 2. Disonnet steering le from power steering ontrol vlve levis. - Steering Cle - Clevis - Pin - Cotter Pin 3. Disonnet power steering ontrol vlve levis from rive unit steering lever Clevis - Steering Lever - Pin - Cotter Pin (Hien) MARCH 1998 Pge 6A-13

Turn nut lokwise to extly 1/2 the rottion neessry to hnge iretion of ro en levis movement.. If power steering piston ro en levis moves towr left (port), turn nut ounterlokwise until levis just egins to move towr right (stror), then turn nut lokwise until levis just egins to move towr left (port). Apply lierl mount of Speil Lurint 101 to en of steering le n instll le en in levis. Seure with pin n otter pin. 9. Torque self-loking oupler nut to 35 l. ft. (48 N m). 10. CAUTION Steering les MUST BE THE CORRECT LENGTH, prtiulrly when instlle in lrge ots. Shrp ens or too-short les result in kinks; too-long les require unneessry ens n/or loops. Both ple n extr stress on the le. The proper le is s short s possile, with the fewest ens n with rii s lrge s possile. 1. Remove steering le. Instlltion - Steering Cle - Self-Loking Cle Coupler Nut - Cotter Pin - Clevis Pin WARNING Steering le outer sing MUST BE free to move k-n-forth for steering to funtion properly. DO NOT fsten ny wires, les or other items to steering le, s this my prevent it from moving. 1. Apply lierl mount of Speil Lurint 101 to en of steering le n instll le en in levis. Seure with pin n otter pin. 2. Lter moel ontrol vlve: Using suitle wrenh, hol the flt surfes on the le guie tue in the vertil position. 3. Both moels: Torque oupler nut to 35 l. ft. (48 N m). 4. Erlier moel ontrol vlve: Instll n tighten loking plte on oupler nut. Seure with self loking olt n wsher. NOTE: Lter moel ontrol vlves o not hve loking plte on the oupler nut. 5. Mke sure tht no wires, les, or other items re fstene to steering le, s this my prevent it from moving. CAUTION If Power Steering pump lugs when steering wheel is turne to en of trvel in either iretion (left or right), mge to steering system n/or sternrive my result. IMPORTANT: Mke sure tht Power Steering pump is fille to proper level efore proeeing. 1. Completely open test guge. 2. Strt engine n run t ile spee. 3. Turn steering wheel to hr left n oserve reing on guge. If pressure reing is higher thn 300 psi (2069 kp), stop engine n hek the following:. It is suggeste tht the orer of the instrutions e followe so tht the Power Steering System n e teste effetively. 1. Remove steering le from Power Steering unit n isonnet Power Steering unit from steering lever. e - Clevis - Pins (2) - Cotter Pins (2) - Hien - Steering Lever e - Steering Cle f - Self-Loking Coupler Nut 2. Assemle n instll test guge. f Open vlve on guge ompletely. - Pump Pressure Hose - Guge Fitting - Guge Vlve Hose - Control Vlve Pge 6A MARCH 1998

23 SERVICE MANUAL NUMBER 11 POWER STEERING 4. Connet flush test evie to rive unit. Prtilly open wter tp (pproximtely 1/2 mx.) n llow ooling system to fill ompletely. Cooling system is full when wter is ishrge through the propeller. DO NOT use full wter tp pressure Strt engine n run t RPM until engine rehes norml operting temperture. 6. With engine t ile spee, test guge reing shoul e etween 70 n 125 psi (483 n 862 kp). If not, proee s follows: If lower thn 70 psi (483 kp), proee to Pump Pressure Test, see Inex. If higher thn 125 psi (862 kp), hek for hose restritions in the system. CAUTION DO NOT lug pump t mximum pressure for more thn 5 seons, in next step, or mge to Power Steering pump my our. 7. Push ontrol vlve ptor lok momentrily to the left n then to the right. Guge reing shoul show n instnt inrese in pressure when lok is pushe in oth iretions. 8. Push ontrol vlve ptor lok to the right, until ooster yliner piston ro is fully retrte. With piston ro in this position, momentrily push ptor lok to the right until mximum pressure reing is otine. If pressure is ove 1000 psi (6897 kp), system pressure is goo. If pressure is elow 1000 psi (6897 kp), onut Pump Pressure Test, see Inex. - Control Vlve Aptor Blok MARCH 1998 Pge 6A-23

Instll test guge. - Pump Pressure Hose - Guge Fitting - Guge Vlve Hose - Control Vlve DO NOT operte engine without ooiing wter eing supplie to wter pikup holes in ger housing, or overheting mge to engine my result. 2. Connet flush test evie to rive unit. Prtilly open wter tp (pproximtely 1/2 mx.) n llow wter to enter ooling system. 25 SERVICE MANUAL NUMBER 11 Booster Cyliner Test POWER STEERING 5. Close n open vlve 3 times. Reor highest pressure reing ttine eh time.. If pressure reings re etween 1150 n 1250 psi ( kp) n re within rnge of 50 psi (345 kp), the pump is within speifitions. If the pump tests OK, ut system pressure ws low (s teste uner Power Steering System Pressure Test, see Inex ), proee to Booster Cyliner Test, see Inex.. If pressure reings re etween psi ( kp), ut re not within 50 psi (345 kp) rnge, the Power Steering pump flow ontrol vlve is stiking or pump hyruli system is irty.. If pressure reings re onstnt, ut elow 1000 psi (6897 kp), reple Power Steering pump. CAUTION DO NOT operte engine without ooling wter eing supplie to wter pikup holes in ger housing, or over-heting mge to engine my result. 1. Connet flush test evie to rive unit. Prtilly open wter tp (pproximtely 1/2 mx.) n llow wter to enter ooling system. DO NOT use full wter tp pressure Strt engine. 3. Push ontrol vlve ptor lok to the right until ooster yliner ro is fully retrte. 4. Stop engine. 5. Remove top metl hyruli line from ontrol vlve. 6. Plug port in ontrol vlve n p en of metl line with p n plug supplie in test guge kit. - Aptor Blok - Push to Right - Top Metl Line MARCH 1998 Pge 6A-25

After replement, repet Power Steering System Pressure Test. If pressure is still low, reple ontrol vlve.. If piston ro oes not exten, ut pressure ws low when performing Power Steering System Pressure Test, reple ontrol vlve. 9. Stop engine. 10. Connet power steering piston ro levis to rive unit steering lever. Seure with pin n otter pin. 11. Apply lierl mount of Speil Lurint 101 to en of steering le n instll le en in levis. Seure with pin n otter pin. 12. Torque self-loking oupler nut to 35 l. ft.
