CAUTION Shift ontrol nd shift le must position trnsmission shift lever extly s stted in this mnul, or trnsmission, s result of improper shift lever positioning, will not e overed y Borg-Wrner Wrrnty. IMPORTANT: Velvet Drive Wrrnty is jeoprdized if the shift lever poppet ll or spring is permnently removed, or if shift lever is repositioned or hnged in ny mnner. Remote ontrol used must position trnsmission shift lever over the letter F emossed on trnsmission se when remote ontrol is pled in forwrd ger position. Trnsmission filure will our if trnsmission shift lever is positioned over the letter R nd the wrong rottion propeller is used to propel ot forwrd. Remote ontrol lso must provide totl shift le trvel (t trnsmission end) of t lest 2-3/4 in. (70 mm). This is neessry to position trnsmission shift lever fully in the forwrd nd reverse ger positions. Insuffiient shift le trvel will use trnsmission to slip nd eventully fil. Engine Engine rottion is indited on engine speifitions nd seril numer del on flme rrestor over. Engine rottion is desried when oserved from the rer of the engine (trnsmission end) looking forwrd (wter pump end). Instlled ngle of MIE inord trnsmission nd engine should not exeed mximum of 18 of the wter line. Trnsmission Trnsmission ger rtio (in forwrd ger) is mrked on trnsmission identifition plte, whih is loted on the port (left) side of trnsmission. Trnsmission output shft rottion nd propeller rottion required is indited on del on trnsmission se. Trnsmission rottion is desried when viewed from the rer of trnsmission with trnsmission in forwrd ger seletor position. On MIE engines equipped with in-line trnsmissions hving 1:1 or 3:1 ger rtios, trnsmission output shft rottion is the sme s engine rottion with trnsmission in forwrd ger. Engine rottion is LH (CCW), so LH propeller is required. 1. DO NOT strt or rnk engine without fluid in trnsmission. 2. Use only reommended fluid in trnsmission. 3. Exept in n emergeny, never shift trnsmission t engine speeds ove 1000 RPM. 4. Free wheeling of one propeller (in twin engine ot), t trolling speeds, will not use dmge to the trnsmission; however, ot opertion ove trolling speed should e voided. Be sure proper fluid level exists efore free wheeling propeller. 5. DO NOT pint shift lever poppet ll nd spring. An umultion of pint here will prevent proper tion of the detent. 6. Alwys reple oil ooler nd hoses fter trnsmission filure or prior to instlling new or reuilt trnsmission. Metlli prtiles from filure tend to ollet in the ooler nd hoses nd will grdully flow k into the fluid system nd dmge trnsmission. 7. Alwys use speified oil ooler, hoses nd fittings. Hoses must e t lest 13/32 in. (10.5 mm) I.D. Oil ooler, hoses nd fittings must e suffiient size to mintin trnsmission fluid (in sump) t F (60-88 C). Propeller Propeller rottion is desried when oserved from the rer of the ot (stern) looking forwrd (ow end). The term left-hnd (LH) refers to rottion in the ounterlokwise (CCW) diretion. The term right-hnd (RH) refers to rottion in the lokwise (CW) diretion. A LH propeller will move the ot forwrd when rotted ounterlokwise. A RH propeller will move the ot forwrd when rotted lokwise. 6 Trnsmission Shift Lever The lever hs three holes s illustrted following. IMPORTANT: To urtely hek fluid level, engine must e run t 1500 RPM for 2 minutes immeditely prior to heking level Shift Cle Adjustment Refer to Setion 2C - MIE Models - Borg-Wrner Trnsmissions. Cheking Trnsmission Fluid Level IMPORTANT: Use only speified trnsmission fluid (see Speifitions ). - Dipstik - Full Mrk - Dipstik Tue 1. Strt engine nd run t 1500 RPM for 2 minutes to fill ll hydruli iruits. IMPORTANT: Be sure to push dipstik ll the wy down into dipstik tue when heking fluid level. 2. Stop engine nd hek fluid level. Add trnsmission fluid, if neessry, to ring level up to full mrk on dipstik. 3. Reinstll dipstik. Be sure to tighten T-hndle seurely. DO NOT over tighten. 4. If trnsmission fluid level ws extremely low, refully hek trnsmission, fluid ooler nd hoses for leks. 8A-4 VELVET DRIVE IN-LINE TRANSMISSION

Allow trnsmission to drin ompletely. 3. Hoses should e inspeted for rks or frying. Reple dmged hoses. Filling Trnsmission IMPORTANT: Use only speified trnsmission fluid (see Speifitions ). 1. Remove dipstik. Fill trnsmission with fluid, through dipstik hole, to ring up to full mrk.! CAUTION Avoid severe trnsmission dmge or possile filure of trnsmission. Striner must e properly instlled s follows. 5. Instll plsti striner tue with the noth DOWN nd OUT towrd the side of the se Plsti Striner Tue - Noth Dipstik - Full Mrk - Dipstik Tue 6. Instll spring. 7. Cot ushing threds with Quiksilver Perfet Sel. Instll nd torque ushing to 25 l. ft. (34 N m). 8. Cot elow fitting threds with Quiksilver Perfet Sel nd instll in ushing. Tighten seurely. 9. Reonnet hose nd tighten seurely. IMPORTANT: To urtely hek fluid level, run engine t 1500 RPM for 2 minutes immeditely prior to heking level. 2. Strt engine nd run t 1500 RPM for 2 minutes to fill ll hydruli iruits. NOTE: Be sure to push dipstik ll the wy down into dipstik tue when heking fluid level. 3. Stop engine nd quikly hek fluid level. Add trnsmission fluid, if neessry, to ring level up to full mrk on dipstik. 4. Reinstll dipstik. Be sure to tighten T-hndle seurely. 8A-6 VELVET DRIVE IN-LINE TRANSMISSION

9 Removl nd Instlltion NOTICE The following proedure desries removl of trnsmission without removing engine. If engine must e removed, refer to Setion 2 (see Tle of Contents ). 1. Drin trnsmission fluid. 2. Disonnet fluid ooler hoses. 3. Disonnet shift le. 4. Disonnet wires from neutrl strt sfety swith. 5. Disonnet TAN/BLUE wire from fluid temperture swith. 6. Disonnet propeller shft oupling. 7. Remove four rer mount (to engine ed) olts. 8. Support rer prt of engine with either hoist or y using wooden loks under flywheel housing. 9. Remove two enter trnsmission-to-flywheel housing tthing olts nd instll two long studs. IMPORTANT: These two long studs will help support weight of trnsmission during removl nd instlltion. 10. Remove remining trnsmission tthing olts. 11. Pull trnsmission stright k nd off engine. 12. Before instlling trnsmission, hek trnsmission pump indexing for orret rottion. Refer to Pump Indexing. 13. Chek trnsmission output shft rolling torque. See Speifitions. 14. Apply Quiksilver Engine Coupler Spline Grese to trnsmission input shft splines nd engine drive plte splines. 15. If removed, instll rer engine mounting rkets (to trnsmission) s outlined in Setion 3 (see Tle of Contents ). Torque to 45 l. ft. (61 N m). 16. Align trnsmission splines with drive plte splines. 17. Slide trnsmission into ple nd seure with olts. 18. Remove two long studs (instlled in Step 9) nd instll remining two olts. Torque ll olts to 50 l. ft. (68 N m). 19. Relieve hoist tension nd fsten rer engine mounts to engine ed. Tighten olts seurely. 20. Connet wires to neutrl strt sfety swith. 21. Connet tn/lue wire to fluid temperture swith. 22. Connet fluid ooler hoses to trnsmission. 23. Connet nd djust shift le(s) s outlined in Setion 2C - MIE Models - Velvet Drive Trnsmissions. Refer to Setion 2C - MIE Models - Velvet Drive Trnsmissions nd hek engine finl lignment s outlined. 25. After engine hs een properly ligned, onnet propeller shft oupler to trnsmission output flnge. Atth ouplers together with olts, lokwshers nd nuts. Torque to 50 l. ft. (68 N m). 26. Refill trnsmission with speified fluid. Refer to Filling Trnsmission. 27. 10 Pump Indexing Pump must e orretly indexed to orrespond with engine rottion. If pump is not indexed orretly, pump will not rete fluid pressure llowing the trnsmission to shift. Pump housing hs two rrows, eh pointing in different diretion. Pump must e positioned so tht the rrow (pointing in the diretion tht input shft nd pump will e turned y engine) is t the top of trnsmission.! CAUTION Position pump housing with st rrow t top pointing in the sme diretion s engine rottion. IMPORTANT: Some trnsmissions hve letters RH nd LH on pump housing. Letters DO NOT indite shft rottion. If pump must e indexed, proeed s follows: 1. Remove four pump tthing olts. 2. Loosen the pump housing. A soft tip mllet my e used to tp the fluid pssge oss. Do not strike the olt osses. IMPORTANT: Do not remove the pump from the shft unless sel protetor is used to prevent the shft splines from utting the pump sel. Cre must e tken to ensure tht sel, gsket, sel nd olt osses re kept in good ondition to prevent leks in those ritil res. 5. Reinstll four pump-to-dptor tthing olts nd torque to l. in. (23-29 N m). MIE LH (Stndrd) Rottion Engine - Top Of Trnsmission - Word Top nd Cst Arrow - Pump Atthing Bolts d - Input Shft e - Pump Assemly d e Mke sure tht pump gsket is not stiking to housing (to prevent gsket from tering or folding) when rotting pump. 4. 11 Shift Lever Instlltion IMPORTANT: Borg-Wrner Wrrnty is jeoprdized if the shift lever poppet spring nd/or ll is permnently removed, or if the shift lever is hnged in ny mnner, or repositioned, or if the linkge etween the remote ontrol nd the trnsmission shift lever does not hve suffiient trvel in oth diretions. Shift lever nd relted prts must e ssemled s shown. 1. Lurite poppet ll, spring, nd holes in shift lever with Quiksilver 2-4-C Mrine Lurint. 2. Instll poppet spring nd ll. Retin ll y pling shift lever on shft. 3. Instll flt wsher, lokwsher nd nut on shft. 4. Torque nut to l. in. (11-15 N m). Pressure Test 1. Instll pressure guge Min Line Pressure Tp - Remove Temperture Swith 2. With ot in wter, strt engine nd run until norml operting temperture is rehed. 3.
