5 ETH Mud Hle Management Guideline Specificatin 2 Specificatin 2.1 Applicatin f Gemetry Standards Mud hles may cause gemetry t deterirate. This guideline addresses the management f mud hles in accrdance with the gemetry standards. 2.2 Backgrund Intrductin This sectin describes drainage, the types f mud hles, causes f ballast fuling, degradatin t mud hles and degradatin f sft frmatin Drainage In prperly drained track, water frm the surface f the track drains dwn thrugh the ballast t the frmatin. The water then drains acrss the frmatin and ut thrugh the te f the ballast. Finally, the water drains acrss the frmatin cess, ver the frmatin shulder r int a side drain. The side drain shuld be free draining and eventually discharge t a natural creek. With pr drainage, mud hles can frm arund the sleepers r the frmatin can becme sft. Ancillary drainage wrks shuld be cnsidered when carrying ut any mud hle rectificatin wrks. Refer t clause 1.5 fr prcedures relating t drainage Types f mud hles There are tw main types f mud hles: Fuled ballast mud hles: In severely fuled ballast, the sleeper will be surrunded by mud that retains a pl f water (r slppy mud) arund the individual sleepers. This puddle can be perched arund the sleeper with dryer ballast beneath. Alternatively the mud can extend dwn t a slid frmatin (this ften ccurs when there is inadequate ballast depth abve a rck frmatin). In bth cases the prblem is fuled ballast. The resulting gemetry faults are ften shrt sharp faults. 6 ETH Mud Hle Management Guideline Specificatin Sft frmatin: On sft frmatin, the track verall becmes wavy with repeat faults. There may hwever be a single fault and it is generally lnger and gentler than fr the fuled ballast mud hle. The single sft frmatin fault is ften referred t as a ballast pcket. The frmatin utside the te f the ballast may be sft and muddy t walk n. In severe cases the shulders f the frmatin may heave utside the te f the ballast, as the track sinks. Pht Sft frmatin mud hle (refer t drainage manuals listed in clause 1.5) There are guidelines fr the treatment f sft frmatin s this is nt addressed in this guideline. Refer t ARTC Drainage manuals fr mre infrmatin n this type f drainage prblem. It is imprtant t clearly distinguish between these tw cnditins as the treatment is dependent n the prblem. Smetimes bth cnditins exist at the ne lcatin, and in these cases the remedial actins must address bth cnditins. In all cases hwever, the drainage f the track shuld be addressed Causes f ballast fuling There are a number f ways that ballast becmes ful: Prly graded new ballast with excessive fines Ballast break dwn ver time Under the actin f train lading During ballast tamping t crrect alignment and level f the track Windblwn dust r sand Strm water washes in fines Sft frmatin can pump up thrugh the ballast when it becmes wet Hard rck frmatin with insufficient ballast depth can cause abrasin f the ballast and rck surface Degradatin f fuled ballast int a mud hle When ballast is fuled the water is trapped in the ballast arund the sleeper. The fines in the ballast appear as mud surrunding the sleeper and in sme cases the sleeper pumps up and dwn in the mud when under train lading. The actual gemetry under the lad f a train can be wrse than the unladed gemetry due t vids under the pumping sleepers. 7 ETH Mud Hle Management Guideline Fuled Ballast Degradatin f sft frmatin Sme weaker frmatins becme sft when wet and depress t frm a puddle under the ballast. The ballast sinks int the frmatin and this leads t lss f track gemetry. Sft frmatin is addressed in ther ARTC drainage standards and manuals. Refer t the ARTC Drainage manual RTS 3432, Track recnditining guidelines RTS 3430 and the Manual n What t d and What nt t d when Perfrming Sub-grade Maintenance. 3 Fuled Ballast Preventing ballast becming ful It is inevitable that ballast will becme fuled ver time. There are hwever steps that can reduce fuling: Purchase ballast in accrdance with specificatin and in particular reject ballast with excessive fines. Avid excessive tamping. If nly a few hundred metres require tamping then d nt tamp the whle km. This avids unnecessary ballast degradatin. It als reduces ttal tamping csts. Clean ut silt frm cuttings. The lng term effect f delaying such wrk is that the ballast becmes fuled with the silt. When ballast regulating, avid grading the frmatin shulder up int the ballast ensure the side ballast plugh des nt put a grve in the frmatin at the ballast te When grading the frmatin ensure the te f the ballast is allwed t drain freely. Prvide adequate ballast under sleepers. Vegetatin cntrl at the te f the ballast limiting drainage Preventing ful ballast becming a mud hle and grwing in length When ballast becmes ful, mud hles can frm. There are practical ways t prevent the frmatin f mud hles in fuled ballast: Pick ut sleeper ends t allw water t drain frm sleeper bay Inspect rail t ensure n wheel burns; squats r rail blemishes remve Avid recvery f ful ballast by Ballast Regulatrs during resurfacing peratins Clean the ballast shulder. It is imprtant t ensure the te f the ballast is nt left ful. If left ful, the frmatin will nt drain prperly and may becme sft Shrt sectins f ful ballast can be simply graded ut and discarded. This is apprpriate when the cst f screening either by prtable screen r ballast cleaner is nt justified fr small sectins Distribute new clean ballast and give the track a high lift Sft frmatin Nte that the remedial actins fr fuled ballast als can be used t address sft frmatin. There are als ther techniques fr strengthening sft frmatin and these are addressed in ther guidelines. Hwever all remedial actins fr sft frmatin require gd surface drainage as d the treatments fr ful ballast mud hles. 8 ETH Mud Hle Management Guideline Mud Hle Management 4 Mud Hle Management 4.1 Intrductin This sectin addresses the inspectin and the treatment f mud hles. 4.2 Inspectin fr mud hles General inspectins Each mud hle fund during nrmal patrl inspectin, reprted by train crews r therwise identified, shuld be inspected as specified in the ARTC Cde f Practice clause A general inspectin shuld be carried ut at specific lcatins when suspected defects are identified frm cnditins determined during patrl inspectins and as defined by the respnses in Table 5.6A. The gemetry at the lcatin shuld be measured and cmpared with specified limits. The cause, restrictins and repair wrk shuld be determined taking int accunt the lcal cnditins at the site that may affect deteriratin rates. General inspectins shuld als identify the need fr further specialist inspectin. At lcatins with mud hles, the gemetry at the lcatin shuld be measured and cmpared t applicable track gemetry standard. The track gemetry standard then applies Fllw up inspectins Individual mud hle lcatins may require nging mnitring with increased regular general inspectins scheduled in the Asset Maintenance Wrks Management system. These lcatins shuld be listed with the reinspectin interval shwn (fr NSW, d nt use the pririty system that is used fr the gemetry faults, rather use the facility t schedule an activity by a nminated date and in this case the actin is a fllw up general inspectin). The factrs that shuld be cnsidered when setting inspectin interval are: Rainfall Rail cnditin Measured track pump under lad Fixed pints within the lcal area (e.g. bridges, turnuts, etc.) Previus track histry Effectiveness f Lcal Drainage Curves Existence f adjacent r multiple mud hles in the track sectins. The aim f the increased inspectins is t inspect and measure gemetry frequently enugh t detect gemetry faults that must then be managed in accrdance with the standards fr track gemetry. 4.3 Assessment f gemetry and the vids under sleepers during general inspectin Measurement f track gemetry shall be in accrdance with the ARTC Track & Civil Cde f Practice Sectin 5: Track Gemetry. Examples f measuring unladed gemetry are: Measurement by manual means using stringlines, tapes and cant bards, r Use f light weight measuring trlleys. The extent f depressin under lad can be measured by: Use f depressin pegs t measure rail depressin relative t the ballast, r Digging ut the ballast frm the end f sleepers and measuring the vid under the sleeper, r Observing the passage f trains, r Use f Vid Metres General Cncept - Use f Depressin Pegs The depressin peg is a tl t measure vids under a sleeper in track while under lad. There are typically tw main types: Type ne, designed with a slide-able stpper (as shwn in Figure 1) the ther type tw, is a simple assembly f a sharp spike with hrizntal pin (as shwn in Figure 2). Simple applicatin f depressin pegs: Set up the peg in the middle f a sleeper bay at a lcatin f cncern, ensuring fixture base & slide stpper are in cntact, and hrizntal pin is in cntact with ft f rail. The amunt f vid/pumping/subsidence-settling may be determined by measuring the distance between: the bttm f the fixture base and tp f the slide-able stpper fr type 1 (ensuring the ft is n the ballast ) r, the gap between the rail ft and hrizntal pin fr the spike type 2 after a train traverses the lcatin. T filter ut the elastic mvement, a functin f track stiffness, test pints are required as a reference baseline. (Tw pegs are required fr a reference baseline each end, and they shuld be set up at least 1 sleeper-spacing ut f the defective area, and nt further than 7 sleeper bays away frm the defective interface.) This is illustrated in Figure 3. Figure 3: Simple applicatin f depressin pegs fr the defective length f track bed which is n lnger than 10 sleeper bays. The applicatin f depressin pegs in track depends mainly n the length f a mud-hle lcatin, defect lcatin, and track characteristics. The measurement must be cnducted n bth rails f the track. 11 ETH Mud Hle Management Guideline Mud Hle Management Fr mud hle lengths less than 10 sleeper bays (which is apprximately equal t half-length between tw bgie centres), 2 pegs shuld be applied in the defective area (either in the middle distance r the mst severe lcatin); Fr mud hle lengths lnger than sleeper bays, multiple pegs shuld be applied in the defective area; The depressin measurement may be factred t the gemetry measurements at that lcatin t assess the simple extent f depressin under lad. Detailed applicatin f depressin pegs: Mre detailed applicatin f depressin pegs may be required t allw fr in depth analysis f the assessment f gemetry under lad. Distributin f depressin pegs detailed applicatin: Detailed applicatin invlves deplying depressin pegs at tw metre intervals t best line up with tw metre gemetry statin measurements. Set up the pegs per the simple applicatin in applicatin, but at tw metre gemetry statin intervals; Extend the peg statin t be at least 2m each side f the mud hle defective interface; After the passage f a train measure the depressin fr each peg in the same manner as the simple applicatin. Calculate the laded 4 m tp by adding the depressin at each statin less ½ the depressin ne end f the chrd and less ½ the depressin the ther end. Calculate the laded twist by checking fr a difference in depressin between rails at each statin. If there is n difference, the twist will be as statically measured. If there is a difference, this amunt needs t be added r subtracted t the superelevatin measured & full laded twist recalculated with the laded superelevatin. Detailed applicatin may als be applied at a sample f simple applicatin measurements as cnfirmatin that the simpler prcess is prviding a satisfactry representatin f the depressin under lad. Fr the applicatin in turnut area, the measurement and reference baseline shuld be separately cnducted t the main directin, turnut directin, switch area, clsure cnnectin area, and V crssing areas. 4.4 Treatment f mud hles Interim treatment Shrt term treatment invlves draining the sleepers that are pumping. This is generally dne by frming a narrw drain frm the level f the bttm f the sleeper ut past the ballast shulder. At a later time when drained the ballast is then tamped back under the sleeper. Tamping such sleepers withut drainage will nt be as successful. In warmer mnths frm Nvember t March, a stability analysis is t take accunt f the disturbance t the ballast at the lcatin when the sleeper ends are expsed in this manner as a buckle may ccur. Fr further guidelines see Appendix C Lng term treatment There are many ptins fr lng term treatment but all invlve imprving the drainage f the ballast befre tamping. The main slutins are: Shulder ballast cleaning. Shulder cleaning can be dne at spt lcatins using excavatr equipment, r n-face with large n track shulder ballast cleaners. Replacing r cleaning the ballast in the cribs in assciatin with shulder ballast cleaning imprves the effectiveness f shulder ballast cleaning. This can be dne with excavatrs r n-track undercutters. Sledding is an ptin that will enable new free draining ballast t be placed belw and arund sleepers. Fr these ptins the te f the ballast needs t be cleaned t prevent pnding n the frmatin inside the te. Such pnding can sften the frmatin. Fr further guidelines see Appendix C. 13 ETH Mud Hle Management Guideline Sectins with a Severe Mud Hle Prblem 5 Sectins with a Severe Mud Hle Prblem 5.1 Intrductin Sme sectins f track are prne t mud hles due t the severity f ballast fuling. In additin t the guidelines abve, these sectins may require additinal inspectin prcesses t ensure track gemetry is maintained until the prblems are rectified. There may als be additinal resurces required fr remedial actin. 5.2 Inspectin regime The increased inspectin regime may include increased patrls, r increased general inspectins r increased frnt f train inspectins, r a cmbinatin f these Patrls As a guide, areas severely affected with mud hles shuld be inspected by patrl r frnt f train inspectin fllwing significant rain when mud hles can be expected t deterirate r new mud hles frm. Sectins patrlled tw times per week will generally remain the same, but sectins nrmally patrlled nce per week may need additinal patrls during wet weather General inspectins Individual mud hle lcatins may require nging mnitring with regular general inspectins scheduled in the Asset Maintenance Wrks Management System (WMS). These lcatins shuld be listed with the reinspectin interval shwn. (In NSW, d nt use the pririty system that is used fr the gemetry faults, rather use the facility t schedule an activity by a nminated date and in this case the actin is a fllw up general inspectin. These fllw up general inspectins may be scheduled at regular shrter interval) The factrs that shuld be cnsidered when setting inspectin interval are listed in abve Frnt f train inspectins The frequency f frnt f train inspectins shuld be reviewed fr sectins where mud hles are knwn t be a significant issue. During dry spells when the ful ballast becmes stable the number f frnt f train inspectins shuld again be reviewed t reduce t a frequency apprpriate t detect rugh ride lcatins. These inspectins are t be planned in accrdance with the Asset Maintenance Wrks Management system. 5.3 Planning remedial wrk The nrmal Asset Management Wrk Management System (WMS) is t be used fr planning and cntrlling the remedial wrk in additin t planning and cntrlling any increased inspectins. Where the extent and severity f mud hles in an area is beynd the resurces f the lcal maintenance staff t cntrl, a plan shuld be prepared t address the mud hle prblem and submitted fr apprval and funding. 6 Measure 6.1 Mnitring the gemetry The successive runs f the AK car will prduce the KPI s fr the track gemetry in accrdance with prcedure ETP The TQI and the trend data fr number f defects in the E1 and E2 range will demnstrate success in managing mud hles in a manner t maintain track gemetry. 16 ETH Mud Hle Management Guideline Appendix C 9 Appendix C 9.1 Guidelines fr remedial actin 9.2 Intrductin This Appendix cntains guidelines fr remedial actin. Als refer t the ARTC Engineering Manual, RTS 3432 Track Drainage Inspectin and Maintenance. 9.3 Interim plans fr mud hles There can be interim plans t attenuate the prblems pending final slutin. Examples are: Narrw drains frm the end f the effected sleepers frm the level f the bttm f the sleeper ut past the shulder t drain the perched water pcket. A pelican pick is ften used t dig this drain. Remval f the ballast frm the end f each sleeper affected by the mud hle. Care shuld be taken nt t excessively undermine the ballast underneath the sleeper as the supprt may cllapse cmpletely. A precautinary speed restrictin mre cnservative than that prescribed in the Track and Civil Cde f Practice (r applicable Standard in NSW) may apply when the sleeper s ends are expsed. In warmer mnths frm Nvember t March, a stability analysis is t take accunt f the disturbance t the ballast at the lcatin when the sleeper ends are expsed in this manner as a buckle may ccur. In additin t draining the end f the sleeper, 20mm gravel can be used arund the sleepers t pack the vid under the sleeper withut disturbing the mud beneath the sleeper. High lift tamping can be used. There shuld be enugh make-up ballast t ensure adequate ttal ballast depth. The surface drainage acrss the new bed shuld ensure there is n pnding under the track. There shuld als be free drainage with n pnding ut t the side drains. Shulder ballast cleaning. When this methd is used this shuld include remval f the fuled te f the ballast. The surface drainage frm the bttm f the cleaned sectin acrss the frmatin t side drains shuld ensure there is n pnding. There shuld be enugh make up ballast t ensure adequate ttal ballast depth fr sleepers. Ntwithstanding ttal ballast depth fllwing shulder cleaning, there shuld be a minimum 50mm tamping lift. Shulder cleaning is far cheaper than full sectin cleaning and less disruptive t train peratins. The bttm f the finger drains shuld drain water ut past the te f the new clean ballast and the frmatin cess t the side drain. Where the fuling f ballast is extreme, full sectin ballast cleaning r shulder cleaning becmes unecnmic as the cst increases due t clgging f the screens and the percentage f returned ballast is lw. Sledding r full sectin replacement shuld then be cnsidered. Sledding. This methd can be used t imprve drainage f surface water away frm the sleepers. The main requirements are: Free draining sledded surface. Any windrw utside the sledded surface is t be remved May invlve grading ut the shulders f the sledded surface. Clean ballast is placed under and arund sleepers It is crucial that the surrunding track drainage als be addressed t minimise water within the ballast/frmatin.
