2 FOREWORD The Internatinal Telecmmunicatin Unin (ITU) is the United Natins specialized agency in the field f telecmmunicatins, infrmatin and cmmunicatin technlgies (ICTs). The ITU Telecmmunicatin Standardizatin Sectr (ITU-T) is a permanent rgan f ITU. ITU-T is respnsible fr studying technical, perating and tariff questins and issuing Recmmendatins n them with a view t standardizing telecmmunicatins n a wrldwide basis. The prcedures fr establishment f fcus grups are defined in Recmmendatin ITU-T A.7. The ITU-T Fcus Grup n Driver Distractin (FG Distractin) was established further t ITU-T TSAG agreement at its meeting in Geneva, 8-11 February ITU-T Study Grup 12 is the parent grup f FG Distractin. Deliverables f fcus grups can take the frm f technical reprts, specificatins, etc. and aim t prvide material fr cnsideratin by the parent grup in its standardizatin activities. These external applicatins culd be running n nmadic devices brught int the vehicle, radside infrastructure, r clud-based servers. Applicatins dwnladed t the vehicle platfrm after the time f manufacture are als cnsidered external applicatins since they may nt be fully integrated int the Driver-Vehicle Interface (DVI) and require a cmmunicatins interface. Examples f such systems include lane departure warning systems and Adaptive Cruise Cntrl (ACC). Cmmercial rad vehicle a vehicle used by businesses r public transprtatin authrities which as a primary functin ther than persnal transprtatin f individuals r small grups f individuals. Examples include tractrtrailers and buses. Such vehicles ften require drivers t perfrm additinal tasks while driving which may nt have been adequately cnsidered during the develpment f this reprt. Driver-Vehicle Interface (DVI) the integrated user interface in the vehicle. It includes visual displays, ludspeakers, micrphnes, manual input cntrls, etc. External applicatin/service applicatins/services that were nt integrated int the vehicle at the time f manufacture. Such applicatins/services include thse that reside n a nmadic device brught int the vehicle, radside statin, r clud-based server. Applicatins/services that d reside n the vehicle platfrm, but were nt integrated at the time f manufacture (e.g., dwnladed applicatins), are als cnsidered external applicatins/services since they might nt be fully integrated int the DVI. Intrductin Nmadic Infrmatin and Cmmunicatins Technlgies (ICTs) devices (e.g., mbile phnes, prtable navigatin units, etc.) are currently being used within the autmtive cckpit by drivers while perating their vehicle. Their small size, manual interface, unsecured/uncntrlled/arbitrary psitin within the vehicle, and uncntrlled interactin with the driver has the ptential t reduce drivers situatinal awareness and ability t effectively cntrl their vehicle. It is unlikely that regulatin and educatin alne will prevent usage f these devices within the cckpit. Therefre, technlgy-based slutins fr safer interactin shuld als be pursued. There is als a need t enable safer interactin with applicatins running n radside infrastructure and clud-based servers. Draft new Recmmendatin ITU-T G.V2A will define a cmmunicatins interface between external applicatins and a Vehicle Gateway Platfrm (VGP). The cmmunicatins interface will allw external applicatins t leverage the user interface f the vehicle platfrm. It will als enable the vehicle platfrm t cntrl the timing and frmat f all applicatin messages t the driver nt just thse integrated at the time f vehicle manufacture. The purpse f this reprt is t prvide input t G.V2A. Sectin 3 describes existing cmmunicatins interface appraches. Sectin 4 lists sme existing wrks and n-ging activities that may be helpful in G.V2A standardizatin wrk. 6. Existing appraches fr Vehicle-t-Applicatin (V2A) cmmunicatins interfaces There are at least a few different appraches that are currently being used t prvide a cmmunicatins interface between the vehicle and external applicatins. These are described in the next 3 subsectins. Subsectin 3.4 discusses requirements fr the cmmunicatins interface. 6.1 Remte UI apprach In this apprach the vehicle acts as a remte User Interface (UI). It simply passes driver input registered n vehicle cntrls t external applicatins, and delivers utput received frm external applicatins t the vehicle s visual displays and ludspeakers with minimal, if any, mdificatin. Examples f this apprach include ipd ut and MirrrLink. 2

9 6.2 Autmtive API apprach FG Distractin Reprt n Vehicle-t-Applicatins Cmmunicatins Interface In this apprach the vehicle acts as a thick client. It expses user interface services t external applicatins using an Applicatin Prgramming Interface (API). Fr example, speech recgnitin services can be running lcally n the vehicle and allw external applicatins t get speech input frm the driver via API calls t the vehicle. Fr example, this apprach is being used by the Frd Sync system. 6.3 Hybrid apprach In this apprach there is n clear client r server rle that the vehicle plays. The vehicle may act as a client by simply passing driver input t the applicatin and displaying ut received frm the applicatin. Other times it may als act mre like a server and prvide services t the applicatin. An example f this apprach can be fund in sme HTML5 based implementatins. 6.4 Cmmunicatins interface requirements fr G.V2A The cmmunicatins interface t be standardized in G.V2A will need t be capable f supprting the requirements f P.UIA and G.SAM. P.UIA will specify design and perfrmance requirements fr the Driver-Applicatin system. It is pssible that sme f these requirements may impse requirements n the cmmunicatins interface defined in G.V2A. G.SAM will specify functinal requirements fr the Driver-Applicatin system. Fr example, it is expected that there will be a mechanism that allws the vehicle t suspend/resume interactin with an external applicatin. The cmmunicatins interface f G.V2A must be able t supprt the peratin f this mechanism. It may als make sense fr sme f the G.SAM mechanisms t be built-in t this cmmunicatins interface. 7. Existing wrks and related n-ging activities There are several existing wrks and n-ging activities that shuld be cnsidered during the standardizatin f G.V2A. The fllwing subsectins list sme relevant existing wrks and n-ging activities. 7.1 Existing wrks Belw are sme existing wrks that shuld be cnsidered during the develpment f G.V2A: Adaptive Integrated Driver-vehicle InterfacE (AIDE) [2] This Eurpean prject used a centralized cmmunicatins interface that enabled bth lcal and external applicatins t interact with the driver in a cntrlled way. Car Cnnectivity Cnsrtium s MirrrLink [3] MirrrLink is a cmmunicatins interface fr nmadic devices. ETSI reprt n ICT in cars [4] this ETSI technical reprt prvides sme discussin f cmmunicatins interfaces. Frd SYNC platfrm [5] the Frd SYNC platfrm serves as an example f the Autmtive API apprach. HTML5 web technlgies [6] HTML5 serves as an example f the hybrid apprach. W3C Web & Autmtive wrkshp [7] this wrkshp explred the rle web technlgies culd play in an autmtive envirnment. 3
