2 Department Prfile Diesel Equipment Technicians repair and maintain diesel engine pwered equipment. The diesel equipment technlgy prgram at USU Eastern has been designed t prepare a student fr a career in either "n highway" r "ff rad" industry by ffering thery and hands n instructin related t the cmmn sub-systems used in bth equipment areas. By taking a brad spectrum f classes, a student is able t get a feel fr the diesel industry. A student will als be able t fcus n a particular emphasis, while the experience in varius study areas prvides fr diversified emplyment pprtunities upn cmpletin. Authentic learning is incrprated int all curses as it becmes available and as it fits int the curriculum (see Appendix 4A) Students get hands n pprtunity t perfrm preventive maintenance, inspectin, adjustments, and repair t air brakes, suspensin systems, clutches, transmissins, differentials, and drive line cmpnents used in heavy duty diesel equipment. Once again live wrk is brught int the shp USUE has great industry supprt in this area because we have ne f the few heavy truck alignment systems in Utah it is a Hunter cmputerized heavy duty alignment rack. Students d cmputerized frnt end and tandem alignment n medium and heavy duty trucks. Student Particular attentin is given t attendance, quality f wrk, prductivity during class time and the ability t fllw detailed written prcedures frm service manuals. Shp safety is als stressed. Prgram Assessment In the past 4 r 5 years different teaching stratagies have been tried in the class rm as well as the lab. Things like students giving a presentatins wrks well n ccasin and as a break frm the nrmal, seems t take up a lt f time if used mre than nce r twice a semester. Take hme quiz s wrk well t get the students t study the bk, but students tend t memrize the questins instead f learning t prblem slve frm the infrmatin prvided in the bk The stratagey that seems t wrk best is t lecture then d hands n that day in the lab then give pp quiz s t check learning, and finally test t finish the chapter. Pwer pint presentatins can wrk really well but need t be a guide fr the lecture nt read t the students Vides wrk well t reinfrce after the fact f lecture nt t replace lecture. Prgram Supprt USU Eastern Diesel Technlgy has mdern equipment in many areas it s a challenge t stay current in engines and electrnics areas. These areas are rapidly changing in the industry and teaching equipment bemes ut dated in just a few years. The cst f 1 diesel engine can be anywhere frm $10,000 fr a light duty engine up t 30,000 fr a heavy duty high speed truck engine.the elctrnics diagnstics area is becming expensive with licenes renewals as high as $1800 per year Summer cnference have been helpful in staying current with the industry trends. Wrking as a diesel technician in the summer really helps t stay current, Funding has been ffered by USU

3 t get utside training and is currently in the prcess f deciding what training wuld be the best. Students It is strngly recmmended that a student have a minimum ACT scre f 16 r higher in bth Math & English. Students are required t fllw detailed written prcedures s gd reading cmprehensin is essential. Class size is n average abut 16 full time students (see Table 1 fr enrllement) AAS degree in diesel technlgy r students can cntinue n fr a AS degree Enrlment drpped when CEU was in transistin f becming USUE. 4 APPENDX 4A Curses Offered FALL Even Year; Diesel Engine Over Haul. 8 credits Student learn hw disassemble engines, clean, measure tlerances dwn t.0001 f an inch calculate il clearance n diesel engines. Students als learn what t measure and where t measure the machined surfaces f nt nly the engine blck, but als all ther parts f the diesel engine. Student s are then require t assemble the engine and test it n the engine Dynmeter. The engine Dyn cntrl is cmpletely cmputerized and capable f 100HP and 2000ftlbs f trque we recently up dated the sft ware. The diesel department has 8 t 12 engines n hand fr students t rebuild the cst t rebuild engines is high smetimes we can sell these engines and get thers. The diesel department als brings in live wrk. Live wrks is the public having students rebuild light duty diesels, farm tractrs and sme heavy duty engines. This wrks ut really well because the department desn t have t buy parts and the wner gets an engine rebuilt and the students experience real wrld pressure. Students als learn hw t machine the cmpnents f the engine USUE is ne f nly a few that actually teach engine machining. Engine Machining class is taken in the afternn 2 days a week student learn hw t bre cylinders, resize rds,rebuild valve seats and guides, and grind the surface f the blck and heads. Spring Odd Year: Advanced Diesel Engines. 10 credits Students learn the thery and hw t test and adjust all the sub-systems f the diesel engine including il pressure, cling intake, exhaust and mst imprtantly the fuel system which is electrnically managed. Getting the very latest diesel engines and equipment t test is a challenge t say the least. T d this we have fair supprt frm the industry in supplying us with the sftware t cmmunicate electrnically with the engine r truck. The department spends arund $3000 a year t keep up with the latest technlgy ut there t test and diagnse diesel equipment nt nly the engines but all the systems n mbile equipment are becming cmputer cntrlled. USUE has a Trucking and Heavy Equipment prgram that we partner with t test live equipment in a real wrld setting. The diesel industry technlgy is advancing in leaps and bunds and is being driven by the need t clean up the air that we breathe as well as fuel mileage. The need t stay abreast f the current technlgy is a must nt nly as a technician but as an instructr as well. Fall Odd Year; Mbile Electrical and Electrnic 8 credits Students will study the basic principles f electricity including electrn flw in series and parallel circuits, Ohm s law, magnetism and semicnductr devices related t the mbile industry. The thery and peratin f a cmplete vehicle electrical system and its varius cmpnents will be discussed in a series f subsystems. These sub-systems include: the battery, starter and starting system, alternatr and charging system, gauges and instrument panel, vehicle lighting and accessries, engine electrnic sensrs, as well as the wiring and cnnectins used in each f these systems. Students have the pprtunity t

5 learn schematic symbls by studying the varius types f electrical circuits used in mbile equipment. Students will be intrduced t different test instruments such as the digital multi-meter and testing techniques unique t each type f equipment will be presented. Hands-n experience and thery is given t the student. Each individual type f testing equipment is demnstrated as well as techniques given fr trubleshting, servicing and testing electrical systems: Students demnstrate their prficiency using this equipment t test batteries, starters and the starting system, the alternatr and charging system, gauges, lights and accessries, engine sensrs, as well as the wiring harness and cnnectins used in each f these systems. Particular emphasis is placed n cmpnent identificatin, islating cmpnent failures, and electrical safety prcedures fr bth persnal safety as well as preventing electrical system damage. Once again live wrk is brught int the shp. Students can fix lights test starting and charging systems and fix any prblems in the electrical, electrnic system Fall Odd Year; Fluid Pwer 7 credits Classrm instructin is given in the basic fundamental principles f fluid pwer. Students will discuss and mathematically calculate the relatinships between hydraulic pressure, frce, area, and resistance as well as rpm, trque, hydraulic hrsepwer, energy and heat lss. Cvers the thery and peratin f hydraulic fluid, reservir design, filters, pumps, actuatrs, pressure cntrls, directinal cntrls, and flw cntrls. Students will have the pprtunity t learn schematic symbls thrugh representatins f varius types f circuit design representing bth clsed lp and pen center systems in industrial as well as mbile applicatins. Tpics discussed will be pressure cmpensated systems, hydrstatic drive circuits and system trubleshting. As the curse prgresses, students will be intrduced t methds f trubleshting hydraulic systems using a flw meter and pressure gauges. Students will als identify and review hydraulic fittings, hse types, and safety. Hands-n experience identifying, testing, trubleshting, and rebuilding varius brands f hydraulic cmpnents. Students will have the pprtunity t use a flw meter and pressure gauges t trublesht hydraulic cmpnents as well as test different cmpnents n a hydraulic test bench. Particular emphasis is placed n cmpnent identificatin, failure analysis and hydraulic fitting identificatin. Once again live wrk is brught int the shp usually a backhe wrks best. Students can test pressures and rebuild cylinders in a real wrld setting. Spring Even Year Mbile Air cnditining 3 credits Cvers the principles f heat transfer using refrigerant as the medium. Particular attentin is given t the identificatin and peratin f individual system cmpnents as well as the variatins in system design frm OEM t OEM. Different types f refrigerants used in the mbile industry as well as recvery, recycling, strage, handling, and dispsal will be discussed. Students are taught methds fr R12 t R134A cnversin. After EPA laws and guide lines have been taught students are given the hands-n pprtunity t lcate, identify, test, service, and trublesht different types f mbile AC systems using EPA apprved equipment and prcedures. They will demnstrate their prficiency using recvery recycling, evacuatin, and charging equipment fr bth R-12 and R-134A refrigerants. System cnversin frm R-12 t R134A is als demnstrated. The student will have the pprtunity t test fr a MACS recvery and recycling certificate.

6 Spring Even Year Heavy Duty Chassis and Pwer Trains 10 credits Cvers highway truck air systems, fundatin brake repair and maintenance, frnt end, tandem, and trailer axle alignment, heavy duty suspensin systems, annual and autmatic transmissins, clutches, differentials, and drive lines. Students will calculate drive line angles, gear ratis, and tire size, as well as trublesht and analyze tire wear, failures f gears, universal jints, clutches, axles, brakes
