The PCM uses the rankshaft (CKP) and Camshaft (CMP) Sensrs t determine when an engine misfire event is ccurring and determine individual misfire events by nitring the crankshaft rtatinal speed. A misfire is nthing mre than a lack f cmbustin, which can be caused by pr fuel quality r metering, w cmpressin, lack f spark r unmetered air entering the engine. Other pssible causes such as uncmmanded Exhaust Gas Recirculatin (EGR) lw can als cause a misfire. In the case f multiple cylinders misfiring, r the PCM nt determining the specific cylinder misfiring, P0300 Multiple ylinder Misfire will set. - When Mnitred: Any time the engine is running, and the adaptive numeratr has been successfully updated. - Set Cnditin: The threshld t set the fault is applicatin specific; it is tied t the level f misfire that will cause emissins t increase t 1.5 times the standard r in sme cases 1%. It is always a tw trip fault abve the calibrated RPM. It takes ne fail t set a Pending Fault and tw trips t set the MIL. Three gd trips t turn ff the MIL. Always perfrm the Pre-Diagnstic Trubleshting prcedure befre prceeding. Diagnse and repair any ther active cmpnent r circuit DTCs befre cntinuing with this prcedure. 2. Turn the ignitin n. 3. With the scan tl, select View DTCs. Cpy DTC and Freeze Frame infrmatin. 4. Operate the vehicle under cnditins similar t which the DTC was set. 5. With the scan tl, view the Misfire Mnitr t see which cylinders are effected.

Are there excessive misfires shwn r is the DTC pending at this time? - G T 2 - Perfrm the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnstic prcedure. See: Pwertrain Management/Cmputers and Cntrl Systems/Testing and Inspectin/Initial Inspectin and Diagnstic Overview/Intermittent Cnditin Test. 2. VISUAL INSPECTION Anything that affects the speed f the crankshaft can cause a misfire DTC. When a Misfire is detected fr a particular cylinder, the PCM will shut dwn the Injectr Cntrl circuit fr that cylinder. Misfires detected during a deceleratin are indicatrs f mechanical cncerns. Visually inspect the engine fr any f the fllwing cnditins: - Wrn serpentine belt. See: Engine, Cling and Exhaust/Engine/Drive Belts, Munts, Brackets and Accessries/Drive Belt/Testing and Inspectin. - Binding Engine-Driven accessries: A/C Cmpressr, P/S Pump, Water pump. - Misalignment f the Water pump, P/S Pump and A/C Cmpressr pulleys. - Crrded PCM pwer and grund circuits. - Imprper CKP, CMP, MAP and TP sensr munting. - Pr cnnectr/terminal t cmpnent cnnectin fr CKP sensr, CMP sensr, MAP sensr, TP sensr, fuel injectr, ignitin cil, etc. - Vacuum leaks. - Restricted Exhaust system. Perfrm the CHECKING EXHAUST RESTRICTION diagnstic prcedure. See: Pwertrain Management/Cmputers and Cntrl Systems/Testing and Inspectin/Cmpnent Tests and General Diagnstics/Checking The Exhaust System Fr Leaks. - Restricted Air Inductin system. - Internal engine cmpnent failures. - Overfilled engine il r transmissin. - Extremely ut f balance tires r warped brake rtrs. Were any f the abve cnditins present? - Repair as necessary. - G T 3 3. IGNITION SYSTEM OPERATION WARNING: When the engine is perating, d nt stand in direct line with the fan. D nt put yur hands near the pulleys, belts r fan. D nt wear lse clthing. Failure t fllw these instructins may result in pssible serius r fatal injury. 2. Remve the Ignitin Cils. 3. Cnnect the Ignitin Cil harness cnnectrs. 4. Discnnect the Fuel Injectr harness cnnectr f the cylinder being tested. 5. Install a spark tester n the Ignitin Cil. 6. While cranking the engine bserve the spark cming frm the spark tester. A crisp blue spark that is able t jump the gap f the spark tester shuld be generated at the cil n plug and at the end f the

Remve the Spark Plug(s).. 3. Inspect the Spark Plug(s) fr the fllwing cnditins: - Cracks. - Carbn Tracking. - Freign Material. - Gap size ut f specificatins. - Lse r brken electrde. Lightly tap the bttm f the spark plug n a slid surface. The electrde in the spark plug shuld nt mve. Were any f the abve cnditins present? - Replace the Spark Plug.. - G T 5 5. FUEL PRESSURE CHECK WARNING: The fuel system is under a cnstant pressure (even with the engine ff). Befre testing r servicing any fuel system hse, fitting r line, the fuel system pressure must be released. Failure t fllw these instructins can result in pssible serius r fatal injury. Befre cntinuing, visually and physically inspect the fuel delivery system fr external leaks r damage. Repair/replace as necessary. 1. Install the (8978A) t the fuel rail. 2. Start the engine and bserve the fuel pressure reading. Fuel pressure specificatin is 400 kpa +/- 14 kpa (58 psi +/- 2 psi). Chse a cnclusin that best matches yur fuel pressure reading. Within Specificatin - G T 6 Belw Specificatin - G T 11 Abve Specificatin - Replace the fuel pressure regulatr. See: Pwertrain Management/Fuel Delivery and Air Inductin/Fuel Tank/Service and Repair/Remval and Replacement/Fuel Tank - Remval. FUEL PRESSURE LEAK DOWN

See: Pwertrain Management/Cmputers and Cntrl Systems/Testing and Inspectin/Cmpnent Tests and General Diagnstics/Fuel Pressure Leak Dwn. ere any repairs made after perfrming the leak dwn test? es - Testing cmplete. - G T 7. FUEL INJECTOR OPERATION AUTION: After each Fuel Injectr actuatin, start the engine t clean the cylinder f fuel. Failure t d s culd cause engine damage. 1. Open the Fuel System Islatin Valve. 2. Start the engine and allw the fuel pressure t reach maximum pressure. 3. Turn the ignitin ff. 4. Ignitin n, engine nt running. 5. Using the scan tl, actuate the Fuel Injectr fr the cylinder that indicated the misfire. 6. Mnitr the fuel pressure gauge. es the fuel pressure gauge indicate a drp in fuel pressure? es - G T 8 - G T 9 Turn the ignitin ff, remve the Fuel Pressure Decay Tester and cnnect the fuel lines befre cntinuing. 8. ENGINE MECHANICAL Check fr any f the fllwing cnditins/mechanical prblems: - ENGINE VACUUM - must be at least 13 inches in neutral. - ENGINE VALVE TIMING - must be within specificatins. - ENGINE COMPRESSION - must be within specificatins. - CYLINDER LEAKAGE TEST - must be within specificatins. - ENGINE EXHAUST SYSTEM - must be free f any restrictins r leaks. - ENGINE PCV SYSTEM - must flw freely. - TORQUE CONVERTER STALL SPEED - must be within specificatins. - POWER BRAKE BOOSTER - n internal vacuum leaks. - FUEL - must be free f cntaminatin. - VALVE SPRINGS - cannt be weak r brken. - CAM LOBES - must nt be wrn excessively. - CAM SHAFTS - must nt be wrn r have excessive endplay. Are there any engine mechanical prblems? - Repair as necessary. - G T FUEL INJECTOR CONTROL

When a Misfire is detected fr a particular cylinder, the PCM will shut dwn the Injectr Cntrl circuit fr that cylinder. 4. Install an Injectr id light. 5. With the scan tl, actuate the Fuel Injectr. Des the id light blink/flicker during the actuatin? - Verify that there is gd pin t terminal cntact in the related Injectr and the Pwertrain Cntrl Mdule cnnectrs. Replace the Fuel Injectr. See: Pwertrain Management/Fuel Delivery and Air Inductin/Fuel Injectr/Service and Repair/Fuel Injectr - Remval. - G T INJECTOR CONTROL CIRCUIT 2. Remve the Injectr id light. 3. Discnnect the PCM C2 harness cnnectr. 4. Check the Injectr Cntrl circuit fr an pen, shrt t grund and shrt t vltage. Was a prblem fund with the Injectr Cntrl circuit? - Repair the excessive resistance r shrt in the Injectr Cntrl circuit. - G T FUEL SUPPLY LINE RESTRICTED 2. Raise the vehicle n a hist and discnnect the fuel pressure line at the fuel pump mdule. 3. Install the (8978A) between the fuel supply line and the fuel pump mdule. 4. Ignitin n, engine nt running. 5. With the scan tl, actuate the ASD Fuel System test and bserve the fuel pressure gauge. Fuel pressure specificatin is 400 kpa +/- 14 kpa (58 psi +/- 2 psi). Is the fuel pressure within specificatin? - Repair r replace fuel supply line as necessary. - G T FUEL PUMP INLET STRAINER 2. Remve the Fuel Pump Mdule and inspect the Fuel Inlet Strainer. See: Pwertrain Management/Fuel Delivery and Air Inductin/Fuel Tank/Service and Repair/Remval and Replacement/Fuel Tank - Remval. Is the Fuel Inlet Strainer plugged?

See: Pwertrain Management/Fuel Delivery and Air Inductin/Fuel Tank/Service and Repair/Remval and Replacement/Fuel Tank - Remval. - Befre cntinuing, check the Fuel Pump Mdule harness cnnectr terminals fr crrsin, damage r terminal push ut. Make sure the grund circuit is functinal. Repair as necessary. Replace the Fuel Pump Mdule. See: Pwertrain Management/Fuel Delivery and Air Inductin/Fuel Tank/Service and Repair/Remval and Replacement/Fuel Tank - Remval. 3. (F342) ASD RELAY OUTPUT CIRCUIT 2. Discnnect the Cil n Plug harness cnnectr. 3. Ignitin n, engine nt running. 4. With a scan tl, actuate the ASD Relay. 5. Using a 12-vlt test light cnnected t grund, prbe the (F342) ASD Relay Output circuit in the Cil n Plug harness cnnectr. es the test light illuminate brightly? es - G T 14 - Repair the pen r shrt t grund in the (F342) ASD Relay Output circuit between the IPM and Cil harness cnnectr. - Stp All Actuatins. 14. IGNITION COIL

Using a 12-vlt test light cnnected t a 12 vlt surce, prbe the (K17) Cil Cntrl.2 circuit. 2. Crank the engine fr 5.0 secnds while bserving the test light. What is the cnditin f the test light while cranking the engine? Brightly blinking. - Replace the Ignitin Cil. ON cnstantly. - G T 15 OFF cnstantly. - G T (K17) COIL CONTROL NO.2 CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND 2. Discnnect the PCM C2 harness cnnectr. 3. Measure the resistance between grund and the (K17) Cil Cntrl.2 circuit in the Cil n Plug harness cnnectr. s the resistance belw 100 Ohms?

Discnnect the PCM C2 harness cnnectr. 3. Measure the resistance f the (K17) Cil Cntrl.2 circuit frm the Cil n Plug harness cnnectr t the PCM C2 harness cnnectr. s the resistance belw 5.0 Ohms? es - G T 17 - Repair the pen in the (K17) Cil Cntrl.2 circuit. 7. POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) 1. Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and cnnectrs between the Ignitin Cil and the Pwertrain Cntrl Mdule (PCM). 2. Lk fr any chafed, pierced, pinched, r partially brken wires. 3. Lk fr brken, bent, pushed ut r crrded terminals. Verify that there is gd pin t terminal cntact in the Ignitin Cil and the Pwertrain Cntrl Mdule cnnectrs. 4. Search fr any Technical Service Bulletins that may apply. ere there any prblems fund?
