5 Universal Signature Spray Nozzles (Continuous Applications) 1 Universal Signature Spray Nozzles (Continuous Applications) WARNING! Allow only personnel with appropriate training and experience to operate or service the equipment. The use of untrained or inexperienced personnel to operate or service the equipment can result in injury, including death, to themselves and others, and damage to the equipment. Description This manual provides setup, operation, troubleshooting, service, and parts information specific to Universal Signature nozzles for continuous applications. Signature nozzles deliver superior pattern control and process robustness for diverse product assembly applications. This all steel design uses process air to oscillate adhesive fibers, producing a dense random pattern ideally suited to numerous continuous web coating and product assembly applications. Patterns are exceptionally uniform and edge control is good. These nozzles are available in versions compatible with Universal series modules. Universal Signature nozzles are reversible and may be oriented for either right-hand or left-hand coverage. NOTE: Refer to Parts for nozzle part numbers. Refer to Nozzle Identification for an explanation of nozzle description codes. NOTE: Refer to the applicator manual for all applicator-related information and procedures.

Condition Minimum Value Maximum Value Typical Value Adhesive viscosity 1,000 cps 6,000 cps 1,000-3,000 cps Adhesive flow per nozzle 5-20 g/min 100 g/min As required Explanation: Signature nozzles are available in standard and low-flow versions. Minimum and maximum flow are a function of viscosity. Refer to Operational Capability later in this manual for additional information. Pattern air flow per nozzle (see Note A) 0.5 scfm 1.0 scfm 0.6 scfm Pattern air temperature 0 _C(0_F) above adhesive temperature 14 _C(25_F) above adhesive temperature 0 _C(0_F) above adhesive temperature Pattern air pressure 0.3 bar (5 psi) 1bar(15psi) bar (5-9 psi) (see Note B) NOTE A: Avoid using too much air pressure. Maintaining larger adhesive filaments will improve process stability, increase bond strength, and reduce air consumption. B: The pattern air flow path is critical. Ensure that the pattern air supply lines are properly sized and that they are not kinked in a way that restricts air flow.

10 6 Universal Signature Spray Nozzles (Continuous Applications) Operational Capability Signature nozzles are available in standard, low-flow, and low-flow, low-density offerings. Standard Signature nozzles: S S S With a shim thickness of 0.5 mm and orifice diameters equivalent to in. (0.56 mm), standard flow Signature nozzles provide adequate performance in the majority of applications and are the default nozzle selection. With a shim thickness of 0.3 mm and orifice diameters equivalent to in. (0.43 mm), low-flow Signature nozzles provide additional hydraulic resistance, improving process stability at low application flow rates. With a shim thickness of 0.3 mm, six adhesive orifices (standard and low-flow nozzles have 12 orifices), and orifice diameters equivalent to in. (0.43 mm), 25-mm low-flow, low-density Signature nozzles are recommended for applications in which very low production speeds and/or low material add-on conditions exist. Most production environments require a range of flow rates at a fixed material viscosity. Application requirements will determine the selection of standard, low-flow, or low-flow, low-density nozzles. To aid in nozzle selection, the Signature nozzle capabilities are shown graphically in Figures 4 through 6. Figure 4 Standard Signature nozzle operating window capability

14 10 Universal Signature Spray Nozzles (Continuous Applications) Troubleshooting Problem Possible Cause Corrective Action Example 1. Good pattern (for reference only) Not applicable Not applicable 2. Pattern breaking up with resulting contamination of machine Adhesive temperature too high; viscosity too low (resulting in broken adhesive filaments) Verify that viscosity corresponding to application temperature is in adherence to the published best practices. 3. Buildup of adhesive at nozzle tip(s) Pattern air flow/pressure too high for given flow rate Adhesive temperature too low (resulting in poor processibility) Reduce the pattern air flow/pressure. Increase the adhesive temperature and ensure adherence to the published best practices. 4. Low bond strength Adhesive temperature too low to provide adequate grip Increase the adhesive temperature. Distance from adhesive application to nip point too long Pattern air flow/pressure too high, resulting in excessive adhesive filament attenuation and small fiber diameters Decrease the distance from the point of adhesive application to the combining point (see Figure 1) and the application of nip pressure. Reduce the pattern air flow/pressure to achieve larger adhesive filaments. Continued...

15 Universal Signature Spray Nozzles (Continuous Applications) 11 Problem Possible Cause Corrective Action Example 5. Gaps in adhesive pattern Oneormoreadhesive orifices partially or fully blocked Check the nozzle for damage and clean or replace if needed. Remove themoduleandcheckfor blockage in the pattern air path. 6. Pattern drop in and out, resulting in gaps and erratic operation Nozzle back pressure inadequate for stable operation (low-flow condition) Refer to the operating window graphics to determine if a low-flow condition exists for the given adhesive viscosity. Use low-flow nozzles. Low-flow nozzles increase the resistance to flow and improve process stability. Decrease the adhesive temperature slightly to increase viscosity and resistance to flow. 7. Ends of patterns pull inward, resulting in gaps between adjacent nozzles or adhesive filaments combining (causing heavy and light areas in pattern) Adhesive temperature too loworpatternairflowtoo low for given adhesive flow Verify that viscosity corresponding to application temperature is in adherence to the published best practices. Adjust the pattern air flow/pressure. 8. Outermost ends of patterns pull inward, resulting in narrowed overall pattern width Air currents created by high speed movement of converting machinery are affecting the strands Verify that viscosity corresponding to application temperature is in adherence to the published best practices. Adjust the pattern air flow/pressure.

Do not use a wire brush (or a brush with bristles harder than the nozzle) to clean nozzles.

19 Universal Signature Spray Nozzles (Continuous Applications) 15 Cleaning Method Oven (preferred) Table 1 Preferred Nozzle Cleaning Method Procedure WARNING: Risk of explosion, fire, or toxic vapor release. Depending on the type of adhesive and/or organic solvent used with the nozzles, heating them in an oven can cause a hazardous event. Before using an oven to clean nozzles, consult with the oven manufacturer about the viability of this method and the safety risks. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations. WARNING: Use the oven heating controls to keep the oven at the desired temperature. Do not use an oven that does not have heating controls. WARNING: The heating temperature and time may need to be adjusted based on the oven type, the adhesive type, and the amount of char buildup on the nozzles. Nordson Corporation recommends testing this procedure on discarded nozzles prior to using it on good nozzles. CAUTION: Risk of equipment damage. Remove seals before cleaning nozzles in an oven. Failure to do so can cause a chemical reaction that will permanently damage the nozzles. a. Ensuring that seals have been removed from the nozzles, place them in an electric oven heated to approximately 385 _C (725 _F). Allow the nozzles to bake for approximately 3-4 hours. b. Turn off the oven and allow the nozzles to cool; then remove the nozzles. WARNING: Risk of fire. Use a heat-proof cloth to clean nozzles. Even cotton can burn in high-temperature conditions. WARNING: Risk of equipment damage. Handle nozzles carefully to avoid denting the orifices, which can degrade the adhesive pattern. c. Wipe the nozzles with a soft cloth and then gently blow air through the nozzle orifices from the mounting side of the nozzle.
