Instruction Sheet P/N Preventive Maintenance for Pail Melters 1. Introduction These procedures are recommended in addition to the standard preventive maintenance. Use them to keep yourvista controlled pail melter in good operating condition. 2. Procedures WARNING: Allow only qualified personnel to perform the following tasks. Observe and follow the safety instructions in this document and all other related documentation. To extend the life of your adhesive, run the system at the lowest possible temperature. Refer to your adhesive supplier for application temperatures. When your pail melter/applicator will be idle for more than 1 / 2 hour, apply a high temperature grease to the gun nozzle tip or remove the nozzle and replace it with a nozzle blank. If you know the system will be idle for a week or more, flush the system entirely with the flushing material recommended by your adhesive supplier before shutting down and again before starting operation. If the system is idle for more than a week, and was not flushed before it was shutdown, completely flush the system with flushing material before starting operation. Gun Nozzle Care Every morning, purge approximately 10 grams of adhesive out of the gun with the nozzle removed. Replace the nozzle. Change the nozzle as necessary, at least once every two weeks. Put the used nozzle into a container of Nordson Type R fluid or other approved solvent and allow it to soak overnight. Ream the orifices using the Nordson nozzle cleaning kit to clear the passages.
2 Preventive Maintenance for Pail Melters Pail Changes When changing a pail, perform the following tasks to maintain smooth operation of equipment. 1. Remove the platen from the empty drum as described in Removing a Pail. 2. Clean off the platen and pump area with a plastic spatula or plastic putty knife. NOTE: Ensure that the unit base is free of adhesive and that the pail sits squarely on the base. Failure to do so may result in a poor seal or incomplete emptying of the pail. NOTE: A dented or otherwise damaged pail may cause damage to the platen seal, resulting in faulty equipment operation and replacement of the platen seal. NOTE: Do not use a petroleum-based grease on the silicone platen seal or damage to the seal may result. 3. Apply non-silicone, high temperature grease to the platen seal. 4. Lower the platen into the new pail as described in Loading a Pail. 5. Apply grease to the threads only of the T-handle and the bleed port. 6. Heat until the molten adhesive comes up through the bleed hole. 7. Continue to lower the platen until there is a steady flow of material from the platen bleed hole, then reinstall the platen T-handle as shown in Figure 1. A B C A Fig. 1 Adhesive Flow from Platen Bleed Hole 8. When the digital display on the Vista controller indicates that the application temperature has been reached, turn the pump on.
Preventive Maintenance for Pail Melters 3 Flush the System Flush the system on a regular basis to remove dirt and charred material from adhesive passages and surfaces. Nordson recommends that this be done every two to four weeks. WARNING: Hot! Risk of burns. Wear heat-protective clothing safety goggles, and heat-protective gloves. Failure to observe may result in serious personal injury. To determine the best flushing material to use, contact your adhesive supplier. You will need a small tray or metal pan, an empty pail, high temperature grease, and the recommended flushing material to complete this procedure. Removing a Pail NOTE: Do not attempt this procedure unless the unit is at application temperature. Failure to observe and follow this note may cause damage to the platen seal. 1. Verify that the unit is at application temperature. 2. See Figure 2. Turn the PUMP off through the Vista controller A Fig. 2 Pump On/Off Switch 3. See Figure 3. Place the elevator control valve in the center (neutral) position. ELEVATOR CONTROL 4. Unscrew and remove the platen T-handle from the T-handle adapter. Refer to the Platen Assembly in the Parts section of your manual. 5. Thread the platen removal adapter into the T-handle adapter A 6. Attach the quick disconnect fitting at the end of the removal air line to the platen removal adapter. Fig. 3 Elevator Control Switch
4 Preventive Maintenance for Pail Melters ON PLATEN REMOVAL AIR PRESSURE OFF Removing a Pail (contd.) 7. See Figure 4. Set the PLATEN REMOVAL selector switch to the ON position. 8. Place the elevator control valve in the UP position. 9. When the platen clears the pail, set the PLATEN REMOVAL selector switch to the OFF position. 10. When the platen has reached its maximum height, leave the elevator control valve in the UP position. 11. Open the platen guard (if installed). Fig. 4 Platen Removal Switch A 12. Remove the pail. 13. Trigger all guns until no material flows. Installing the Flushing Material 1. Relieve system hydraulic pressure. 2. Remove the hose(s) from the gun(s), then secure the free hose ends to an empty pail which will be used to collect flushing material pumped through the system. NOTE: You can reuse the flushing material if you place a strainer over the top of the pail used to collect it. 3. Clean each gun in the system as needed. Refer to the gun manual for information on gun disassembly, cleaning, and rebuilding. WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Failure to disconnect and lock out input power may result in personal injury or death. 4. Turn power off, set the main disconnect switch to the OFF position, and lock out input power to the unit. 5. Refer to the wiring diagram for your unit in the Troubleshooting section of your manual. To activate and force flushing material through the system with the gun(s) removed, open the electrical enclosure door and install a jumper wire between terminals XT2-6 and AP6-1/13.
Preventive Maintenance for Pail Melters 5 6. Close and fasten the enclosure door. 7. Restore power. WARNING: Use the flushing material at the manufacturer s recommended temperature which is below the flushing material s flash point. Failure to observe could result in a fire hazard. 8. Adjust the platen and hose setpoints to the flushing material manufacturer s recommended temperature. 9. Place a small tray or metal pan under the bleed tray. 10. Close the platen guard (if installed). 11. Use the elevator control valve to slowly lower the platen into the pail of flushing material. WARNING: Trapped air or hot material could be ejected out of the platen bleed hole with enough force to cause burns to nearby personnel. Wear safety glasses, long-sleeved protective clothing, and gloves when performing this procedure. DO NOT PEER DOWN DIRECTLY INTO THE PLATEN BLEED HOLE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Failure to observe and follow this warning may result in serious personal injury. 12. Continue to lower the platen until there is a steady flow of material from the platen bleed hole, then reinstall the platen T-handle as shown in Figure When the digital display on the Vista controller indicates that the application temperature has been reached, turn the pump on. Pumping the Flushing Material Through the System Pump the flushing material through the system as follows: 1. Pump the flushing material through the system and into the empty pail until the material is free of char and other contaminants. 2. Turn the pump off, then turn the power off, set the main disconnect switch to the OFF position, and lock out input power to the unit.
6 Preventive Maintenance for Pail Melters Pumping the Flushing Material Through the System (contd.) 3. Open the electrical enclosure door and remove the jumper wire from terminals XT2-6 and AP6-1/13. Close and fasten the electrical enclosure door. 4. Reattach the hose(s) to the gun(s). 5. Restore input power to the unit, set the main disconnect switch to ON, and turn the POWER on. 6. Flush any remaining material through the guns with the nozzles removed. 7. Reinstall the nozzle(s) on the gun(s). 8. Reset the platen, hose and gun setpoint temperatures. 9. Replace the pail of flushing material with a new pail of adhesive as described in Removing a Pail and Loading a Pail. Loading a Pail WARNING: Hot! Risk of burns. Wear heat-protective clothing safety goggles, and heat-protective gloves. Failure to observe may result in serious personal injury. CAUTION: Do not attempt this procedure unless the unit is at application temperature. Failure to observe could cause damage to the platen seal. 1. Center a new pail of adhesive material free of dents or other damage on the frame base (or in the pail hold-down assembly) directly under the platen.
Preventive Maintenance for Pail Melters 7 2. Disconnect the platen removal air line from the platen removal adapter. 3. Unscrew the platen removal adapter from the T-handle adapter. 4.
