1 Instruction Sheet P/N 08 0 Description See Figure. The follower module attaches onto the hydraulic section of the pump (). It is designed to force material out of straight-sided containers. Follower plate modules are available to fit the the following container inner diameters: 80-mm 8-mm (-gallon US standard) 0-mm 0 mm -mm (0-gallon US standard) -mm (-gallon US standard) Depending upon the module, follower plates () have either one or two rubber seals. When the follower plate is lowered into a container, the rubber seals cause the material to pressurize by creating a tight seal around the inner diameter of the container. When the pump cycles, the follower plate forces the material out of the container and into the pump hydrualic section. The rubber seals also protect the material from moisture and contamination from the surrounding environment. Lowering the follower plate module into a container will cause air buildup between the bottom of the follower plate () and the material. Removing the bleeder stem () from the adapter () before lowering the follower plate provides a path for the air to vent. The blow-off tube () allows air to enter the area below the follower plate. It uses the same port () as the bleeder stem (). The blow-off air hose from the Rhino VE drum unloader connects to the blow-off tube fitting. When the elevator is in the Up position and the blow-off valve is triggered, air flows under the follower plate. This pressure forces the container off of the follower plate. 08 Nordson Corporation

Contact a local Nordson representative for additional information regarding these procedures. Personnel performing these procedures must know how to safely operate the unloader elevator controls. NOTE: Although the -gallon drum unloader is shown, this procedure is typical for a -gallon drum unloader with the exception of the follower seal quantities. 3 WARNING: It is important to remember that the Neutral setting on the elevator controls is not a locked and secured position. Air pressure remains in the ram cylinders. Small air leaks in the circuit can cause the ram to drift upward or downward. When replacing seals or wipers, use support blocks to secure the ram. Table lists the items that are required to perform this procedure. Support blocks Item Two large screwdrivers or tire irons O-ring grease Table Required Items Use Prevent air cylinder pistons from drifting downward during repairs Pry follower plate seals off of the follower plate NOTE: Follower plate seals are removed in the same manner as a tire from a rim Lubricate new follower plate seals NOTE: The O-ring grease must be compatible with the material being pumped and the new follower plate seals See Figure.. If installed, remove the material container from the drum unloader.. Insert the support blocks (). -gallon drum unloaders: Insert support blocks () between the frame crossbar () and the top of both air cylinders (). -gallon drum unloaders: Insert support blocks () between the lower air motor cap () and the top of both air cylinders ().. Use either large screwdrivers or tire irons to pry the follower plate seals () off of the follower plate grooves.. Perform the following: All drum unloaders: Clean the follower plate grooves and remove all foreign material. -gallon drum unloaders: Inspect the neoprene bands () on the -gallon follower plate () for damage and replace if necessary.. Install the new follower plate seals () using either large screwdrivers or tire irons.. Apply a compatible O-ring grease to the follower plate seals ().. Remove the support blocks () from the drum unloader. Put the drum unloader back into service if desired. 08 Nordson Corporation

Read and understand these procedures before replacing the follower plate seals or wiper seal. Contact a local Nordson representative for additional information regarding these procedures. Personnel performing these procedures must know how to safely operate the unloader elevator controls. 6 Replacing Wiper Seals(contd) See Figure.. If installed, remove the material container from the unloader.. Insert support blocks () between the lower air motor cap () and the top of both air cylinders (0).. Remove the screws (8), washers (), and lock nuts () from the follower module (). Remove the following parts from the follower module: Support rings (, ) Backup ring () Wiper seal () O-ring () Discard the wiper seal (), backup ring (), and O-ring ().. Clean the support rings (, ) and follower module O-ring groove.. Apply O-ring grease to the new O-ring () and install it into the groove on the follower module ().. Install the support rings (, ), new backup ring (), and new wiper seal () onto the follower module () as shown. Secure the parts to the follower module using the screws (8), washers (), and lock nuts (). Tighten the screws securely.. Remove the support blocks () from the unloader.
