1 Instruction Sheet P/N 08573D Paint/Solvent/Dump Valve and Flow-Through Valve. Description See Figure. The paint/solvent/dump valve is a normally-closed valve that opens to trigger and/or dump coating material. Air enters at the air inlet () and dispenses or dumps the material that enters at the fluid inlet (). A spring-return closure keeps the valve closed when air is not being applied. Use paint/solvent/dump valves to actuate or dump paint or solvent in Nordson air spray guns and/or rotary atomizers. Fig. Paint/solvent/dump valve 06500A. Fluid inlet. Air inlet. Removal The procedures below detail the removal of paint/solvent/dump valves from two possible installation locations: in a low pressure air spray system or in a rotary atomizer. WARNING: Allow only qualified personnel to perform the following tasks. Observe and follow the safety instructions in this document and all other related documentation. Removal from an Air Spray System Use the following steps to remove the paint/solvent/dump valve from a low pressure air spray system.. Remove all air and fluid pressure from the system.. Disconnect all air and fluid tubing from the valve. 3. Unscrew the valve from the bulkhead.

2 Paint/Solvent/Dump Valve and Flow-Through Valve Removal from a Rotary Atomizer See Figure. Use the following steps to remove the paint/solvent/dump valve from a rotary atomizer.. Remove all air and fluid pressure from the system.. Remove the cover of the rotary atomizer. 3. Loosen the retaining collars (). 4. Remove the nuts (3), washers (4), and cable adapter (5) from the support (6). 5. Remove the support (6). 6. Remove the manifold () from the rotary atomizer. 7. 3 Paint/Solvent/Dump Valve and Flow-Through Valve 3 3. Installation Based on the system they are used with, the paint/solvent/dump valves can be installed in several possible configurations. Single-, dual-, and three-valve installations allow the valves to function in a variety of ways. Low Pressure Air Spray System Installation Within low pressure air spray systems, a single paint/solvent/dump valve is used as a dump from the system. Single-Valve Installation See Figure 3. The single-valve installation shown is used in a low pressure air spray system, where the valve operates as a dump valve. To install a single valve in a low pressure air spray system, perform the following steps:. Cover all male threads on the valve () with PTFE tape. Install a plastic pipe plug (3) in the valve ().. Screw the valve () into the threaded side of the bulkhead (). 3. 4 4 Paint/Solvent/Dump Valve and Flow-Through Valve Rotary Atomizer Installations See Figure 4, which shows the four possible installations of paint/solvent/dump valves in a rotary atomizer. Installation A shows a single-valve installation used to actuate paint within the rotary atomizer. Installations B and C show two alternate installations that use a dual-valve installation in a paint/dump valve configuration. Installation D shows a three-valve installation that can be used in a paint/solvent/dump valve configuration. Some installations are restricted to RA- or RA-6 rotary atomizers only, as noted in the text. For part numbers of reference items, refer to the parts list at the end of this document.

6 6 Paint/Solvent/Dump Valve and Flow-Through Valve Single-Valve Installation (RA- or RA-6) See Figure 4, installation A. The single-valve installation shown can be installed in either an RA- or and RA-6 rotary atomizer, where the valve is used as a paint valve. To install a single valve, perform the following steps:. Cover all male threads on the valve () with PTFE tape. Install a plastic pipe plug (3) in the valve.. Screw the valve () into the threaded side of the single-port manifold (). 3. Check that the air inlet fitting (4) and fluid inlet fitting (5) are screwed tightly into the valve (). 4. Reinstall the single-port manifold () into the rotary atomizer by reversing the instructions in the Removal section. Dual-Valve Installation (RA-6, Typical) See Figure 4, installation B. The dual-valve installation shown is typical in RA-6 rotary atomizers, where the two valves are used for paint and dump. To install the two valves, perform the following steps:. Cover all male threads on the valves () with PTFE tape. Screw the paint valve () into the threaded side of the single-port manifold ().. Place the O-ring (7) into the counter-bored side of the paint valve () that is installed in the manifold (). 3. Use the screws (8) to connect a second (dump) valve to the underside of the paint valve (), as shown. 4. Install a plastic pipe plug (3) in the counter-bored side of the dump valve. 5. Check that the air inlet fitting (4) and fluid inlet fitting (5) are screwed tightly into both valves. 6. Reinstall the manifold () into the rotary atomizer by reversing the instructions in the Removal section. Make sure to point the outlet of the dump valve toward the large V-shaped opening of the support (6).

The alternate dual-valve installation shown is used in RA- rotary atomizers, where the two valves are used for paint and dump. To install the two valves, perform the following steps:. Cover all male threads on the valves with PTFE tape. Screw the paint valve () into the right-hand port of a dual-port manifold (0).. Install a plastic pipe plug (3) in the counter-bored side of the paint valve. 3. Remove the air inlet fitting (4) and fluid inlet fitting (5) from the second (dump) valve. 4. Screw the dump valve into the left-hand port of the manifold (0), next to the paint valve. 5. Reinstall the air inlet fitting (4) and fluid inlet fitting (5) to the dump valve. 6. Install a plastic pipe plug (3) in the counter-bored side of the dump valve. 7. Check that the air inlet fitting (4) and fluid inlet fitting (5) are screwed tightly into both valves. 8. Reinstall the manifold (0) into the rotary atomizer by reversing the instructions in the Removal section. Three-Valve Installation (RA-) See Figure 4, installation D. The three-valve installation shown is used in RA- rotary atomizers, where the valves are used for paint, solvent, and dump. To install the three valves, perform the following steps:. Cover all male threads on the valves with PTFE tape.. Screw the paint valve into the right-hand port of the dual-port manifold (0). 3. Install a plastic pipe plug (3) in the counter-bored side of the second (dump) valve.

8 8 Paint/Solvent/Dump Valve and Flow-Through Valve Three-Valve Installation (RA-) (contd.) 4. Cover the threads of the pipe nipple (9) with three or four layers of PTFE tape. 5. Screw the pipe nipple (9) into the paint valve installed on the manifold (0). 6. Screw the dump valve into the paint valve. 7. Remove the air input fitting (4) and fluid input fitting (5) from the solvent valve (). 8. Screw the solvent valve () into the manifold (0). 9. Reinstall the air input fitting (4) and fluid input fitting (5) to the solvent valve (). 0. Check that the air inlet fitting (4) and fluid inlet fitting (5) are screwed tightly into all valves.. Reinstall the manifold (0) into the rotary atomizer by reversing the instructions in the Removal sections. Make sure to point the outlet of the dump valve toward the large V-shaped opening of the support (6).. In order to replace the rotary atomizer cover, you will have to adjust the valves placement in the manifold. Tighten and loosen the valves accordingly to angle them for cover alignment. 3. Reinstall the rotary atomizer cover. 4. Operation The following information describes how paint/solvent/dump valves operate in single-, dual-, and three-valve installations. All valve installations require a minimum air pressure of.75 bar (40 psi). Single-Valve When air pressure is applied at the air inlet, the valve opens to dispense coating material or solvent. Because of its spring-return closure, the valve closes when air is removed.

9 Paint/Solvent/Dump Valve and Flow-Through Valve 9 Dual-Valve See Figures 5 and 6. The figures show a dual-valve installation as it dispenses coating material or solvent. See Figure 5. In this figure, coating material or solvent from a low pressure feed system enters at the fluid inlet (). Since the lower valve is closed, the coating material is dead-ended. When air is applied at the air inlet (3), the valve opens and coating material or solvent flow through the fluid outlet () to the rotary atomizer cup. 3 Fig. 5 Dual-valve operation. Fluid inlet. Fluid outlet 3. Air inlet A See Figure 6. If air is removed from the air inlet port of the upper valve, the upper valve closes and blocks the coating material or solvent. When new coating material or solvent flows through the fluid inlet (), the material passes into the second valve. When air is applied to the air inlet port of the second valve (3), the lower valve opens and dumps material from the dump port () into a waste container. 3 Fig. 6 Dual-valve operation. Fluid inlet. 10 0 Paint/Solvent/Dump Valve and Flow-Through Valve Three-Valve Three-valve installations are typically used in applications that require the use of paint, solvent, and dump valves, such as quick color-change applications. Each one of the three valves functions as a paint, solvent, or dump valve. One valve is used as a paint valve to trigger paint. The second valve is used as a solvent valve for cup flush. The third valve is used as a dump valve for color-changing. Flow-Through Valve See Figure 7. Another option is the flow-through valve which allows the coating material to easily pass through the valve. This valve is capable of being easily installed without obstructing the flow path. 11 Paint/Solvent/Dump Valve and Flow-Through Valve 5. Repair See Figure 8. Routinely disassemble and inspect the paint/solvent/dump valve for worn or damaged parts. Once you have disassembled the valve, discard and replace any O-rings or seals. Disassembly To disassemble the valve, follow the procedures below.. When possible, flush the valve with a compatible cleaning solution before removing the valve from the system.. Turn off both fluid and air pressure to the valve. 3. Remove the screws (), lock washers (), and air cylinder (3) from the valve body (). 4. Remove and discard the O-ring (4) from the valve body (). 5. Using the Nordson wrenches provided, remove the lock nut (5) and seal nut (7) from the piston lock-nut assembly (6). 6. Remove the screws (9) that attach the valve seat (8) to the valve body (). 7. Pull the seat (8) and O-ring (7) from the valve body (). Discard the O-ring. 8. Remove the packing cartridge (3) with ball tip (4) attached by pushing at the air cylinder end. 9. To remove the cartridge seat (6): a. remove the retaining ring (5); b. push the cartridge seat out from the valve seat (8). NOTE: The cartridge seat is reversible. If the valve has been leaking, reinstall the cartridge seat with the end that had been seated toward the ball tip. 0. Check the ball tip (4) for wear or scoring. Replace, if necessary.. Check the packing cartridge (3) and discard its O-ring (). Replace the packing cartridge, if necessary.

12 Paint/Solvent/Dump Valve and Flow-Through Valve Assembly To reassemble the valve, follow these procedures.. Coat the packing cartridge (3) and new O-ring (0) with a small amount of non-detergent grease.. Install the O-ring (0) into the packing cartridge (3). 3. Install the packing cartridge (3) into the valve body (). 4. Install the valve seat (8) by tightening the screws (9) evenly to compress the packing cartridge spring. 5. Insert the seal nut (7) and new O-ring (8) into the piston disc (9). 6. Screw the piston lock-nut assembly (7) into the packing cartridge (3) clockwise until it comes to rest against the valve body (). Turn the piston lock-nut assembly counterclockwise - / turns. 7. Hold the piston lock-nut assembly (7) and lock it in place with the lock nut (5) and thread locking compound. Be sure to leave enough clearance for the ball tip (4) to seat after the O-ring (0) distorts. 8. Install the air inlet elbow () to the port of the valve, as shown.
