H200 Module Disassembly and Removal of Components Read and become familiar with the following procedure, notes, and safety warnings BEFORE performing any disassembly of the module. Before installing the seal rebuild kit, use the following procedure to disassemble the module. WARNING: System or material pressurized. Relieve hydraulic pressure before performing this procedure. Failure to observe can result in serious burns. WARNING: Hot! Risk of burns! Wear heat-protective clothing, safety goggles, and heat-protective gloves. WARNING: Avoid prolonged or repeated breathing of solvent vapors. WARNING: Never use a torch or other open flame device to heat a component. Use only a flameless electric heat gun or electric oven with forced air circulation. Failure to observe and follow this warning could result in personal injury and/or damage to the unit and nearby property. WARNING: Certain solvents and flushing materials may pose fire hazards and/or emit toxic vapors. Make sure that solvents and flushing materials are used at a safe temperature below the solvent or flushing material flash point (preferably a minimum of 50 _F (28 _C) below the flash point ). Also make sure that solvents and flushing materials are used with adequate ventilation to safely remove vapors. Contact your solvent manufacturer for specific cleaning solvent and flushing material information. NOTE: Relieve system hydraulic pressure BEFORE relieving system air pressure to prevent the introduction of molten material into the air passages of the module and the service block. Special care should be taken when handling, removing, and reassembling the seal groups. If a seal is damaged, it could result in leakage and premature failure of the module. 1. Heat the system to operating temperature as specified in the applicator product manual.
5 Normally Open H200 and 90_ CF200 Module Seal Rebuild Kit 5 2. Relieve system hydraulic and pneumatic pressure as follows: a. Turn melter and applicator pumps off. b. Trigger the applicator(s) to relieve ALL residual hydraulic pressure. c. Open the manifold drain at the applicator and the melter. d. Reduce applicator air pressure to zero (0 psi) at the regulator. 3. Remove the two socket head screws (item 4, Figure 1) from the front of the module. NOTE: Carefully wipe any material from the service block to prevent the material from entering any air passages. 4. Remove the module from the applicator. 5. Remove the two Kalrez o-rings (17) from the back of the module. 6. Remove the screws (8) from the top of the module. 7. Remove the air cap from the module body. 8. Remove the needle and piston assembly (1) and the return spring (6) from the top of the module. 9. Remove the seal support disk (2) and the retaining ring (10), using the removal tool (P/N ). 10. Remove the seal support disk (2) and the upper and lower hat seals (5) from the upper seal group. 11. Remove the four oval head screws (9) from the bottom of the module. 12. Remove the seat and the Kalrez o-rings (18). 13. Remove the compression spring (14), lower seal support disk (2), and spring seal (7). 14. Remove the insert (12) and o-rings (15, 16) and discard. WARNING: Risk of fire. Using an open-flame or unregulated hot plate to heat Type R fluid can cause a fire that can cause severe injury. Do not heat Type R fluid above 475 _F (246 _C). Do not heat Type R fluid with an open flame or in an unregulated heating device (for example, a small pan or an unregulated hot plate). Use a controlled heating device (such as a small deep fat fryer or thermostatically-controlled hot plate) to heat the cleaning fluid above the melting temperature of the hot melt material.
6 6 Normally Open H200 and 90_ CF200 Module Seal Rebuild Kit 15. Submerge the module components in a bath of Nordson Type R fluid, and heat the bath to the melting point of the thermoplastic material. 16. Remove the components from the bath and wipe with a clean, dry cloth. NOTE: Internal surfaces of the module must be free of contaminants and scratches wherever hydraulic or pneumatic sealing occurs. Air cap sealing surfaces must be free of scratches and any foreign material. 5. N. O. H200 Seal-Rebuild Kit Installation and Module Reassembly NOTE: Nordson has revised the H200 style modules to enhance their service life. S Modules produced prior to August 1989 (XX89H) contain a red formed seal with a retaining spring in the hydraulic section. S S Modules produced after August 1989 to March 1992 contain a black plastic seal without a retaining spring in the hydraulic section. Modules produced from March 1992 to the present, contain a small washer and lightweight retaining spring will be used with this black plastic seal. NOTE: After rebuilding the module with this kit, the module should look like the module shown in Figure 1. Do not vary from this configuration. Substitution of seals from other manufacturers, or the combination of new seals with badly worn needles, can result in high pressure adhesive entering the air section or exiting the face of the module. 1. On a clean, flat surface place the module body on the base tool (P/N ) with the pneumatic section of the module pointing upward (Figure 1). 2. Place the new return spring (6), seal support disks (2), retaining ring (10), and the hat seals (5) on the new piston needle assembly (1) in the order shown in Figure 1. Apply a small amount of Neats Foot Oil (P/N ) to the seal on the new piston needle assembly. 3. Insert the preassembled needle with piston and the upper seal group into the top of the module block. Push the needle downward until the tangs on the retainer enter the point of engagement. NOTE: Downward force on the piston seats the retaining ring and seals in the bottom of the air section. Push the needle with piston downward from the CENTER of the piston. Pushing the piston off-center may damage the seals or crimp the top of the piston assembly, causing premature failure of the module. 4. Push on the top of the piston and slide it into the module body until the new packings are seated as shown in Figure Remove the base tool.
7 Normally Open H200 and 90_ CF200 Module Seal Rebuild Kit 7 6. Coat the replacement screws (8) with PTFE paste (P/N ). Position the air cap (Figure 1) with new gasket (3) onto the module body, and secure it with screws (8). 7. Torque the screws to in.-lb. ( NSm). 8. Carefully install the new spring loaded seal (7) by hand, with the spring/groove side away from the module body, onto the needle and piston assembly. 9. Refer to the following note, then carefully seat the seal using the base tool. NOTE: Installation is complete when the seal can no longer be pushed further into the module and the seat is seated below the chamber in the module body. There will be a noticeable drop (1/8 in.) as the seal sets in place. 10. Place the replacement seal support disk (2) on top of the spring loaded seal (7). 11. Place the replacement compression spring (14) on top of the seal support disk. 12. Install the replacement o-ring (18), coated with lubricant (P/N ), onto the seat. 13. Coat the four new oval head screws (9) with PTFE paste (P/N ). 14. Place the seat into the bottom of the module body, compress the spring (14), and insert the four screws (9) through the seat and into the module body. 15. Securely tighten each screw. 16. Assemble the replacement o-rings (15, 16) onto the replacement insert (12), and screw onto the seat. Coat outer o-ring (15) with lubricant. 17. Position the two replacement o-rings (17), coated with lubricant, into the grooves in the back of the module body. 18. Position the module on the applicator. 19. Coat the two replacement socket head screws (4) with PTFE paste (P/N ), and secure the module to the applicator with the screws. 20. Restore the system to operation as specified in the applicator product manual.
