1 Nordson Corporation OPERATOR S CARD P/N D Select Series H-440 Hot Melt Dispensing Guns Safety WARNING: Allow only qualified personnel to perform the following tasks. Follow the safety instructions in this document and all other related documentation. WARNING: Series H-440 guns are designed for use with Nordson equipment. When using the guns with non-nordson equipment, follow the safety information and operating procedures in your equipment-specific manuals. Pay special attention to the procedures for electrical grounding, gun air pressure adjustment, system hydraulic pressure adjustment, and relieving hydraulic pressure. WARNING: Risk of personal injury. If you remove the preinstalled solenoid valve, correct reinstallation is required to prevent normally open gun operation. A normally open gun will dispense adhesive uncontrollably until the primary air supply is interrupted. WARNING: Risk of equipment damage. Series H-440 gun modules operate as air-open, air-close valves. The loss or elimination of air pressure to the gun solenoid valve without a corresponding reduction in hydraulic pressure may cause the gun modules to remain open. Description Nordson Series H-440 guns are used to apply thermoplastic hot melt materials to a product. Polyurethane-reactive (PUR) and high-temperature polyamide adhesives can negatively affect gun performance and durability. H-440 gun modules are designed for high speeds and extended service life. An H-440 gun module can exceed 4,500 cycles per minute and provide up to twice the service life of a Nordson Series H-200 gun module. H-440 gun modules provide uniform bead deposition and improved cutoff in aggressive or hard-to-dispense adhesives. H-440 gun modules for ITW Dynatec, Robatech, and KB Series hot melt systems are heated by replaceable heater elements that are controlled by a Pt-100 platinum temperature sensor (ITW Dynatec) or a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor (Robatech). A variety of nozzle sizes may be used with H-440 guns ÂÂÂ Fig. 1 H-440 Gun Components 1. Gun air pressure 5. Mounting bracket regulator 6. Gun module 2. Air supply line 7. Gun manifold 3. Silencer 8. B: Use dry, regulated, unlubricated air for consistent gun operation. C: Series H-440 guns use the same nozzles as Series H-200 guns. D: Contact Nordson if you wish to use an alternate power supply. Installation Guidelines Mount the guns so the nozzles are no more than 13 mm (0.5 in.) from the product. Protect the guns from vibration and secure them so they will not change position during application. When installing or replacing the solenoid valve, make sure valve port 4 is connected to the closed gun manifold port and valve port 2 is connected to the open gun manifold port. If you need to use extra fittings to connect the hose to the gun, contact Nordson to order optional straight, 45, and 90 fittings. Use one of the following power supplies for the solenoid valve: Insulate gun-to-hose joints. Use Nordson precision nozzles. Contact Nordson to order nozzles. - In North America, use a National Electrical Code (NEC) Class 2 or equivalent power supply. Make sure the gun air pressure regulator is capable of providing a minimum of 3.4 bar (50 psi) to the solenoid valve. If you change the preinstalled Nordson solenoid valve, make sure the new valve has the same center-line dimensions and port operation as the Nordson valve. - In Europe, use a Protective Extra Low Voltage (PELV) or Safety Extra Low Voltage (SELV) power supply. This supply must provide 24 V DC, have an output limited to 8 A, and not be capable of providing more than 240 V AC under any fault condition. The supply must be certified for use in the country of installation. Setup for Robatech Guns To ensure proper temperature-control sensing on Robatech guns, set the temperature-compensation factor to 7.5. For information on how to set the temperature-compensation factor, refer to your Robatech hot melt unit manual. 42-H440-MA-02 2 Issued 3/03

5 Troubleshooting Use the following table if your gun is not applying adhesive properly. Refer to your equipment-specific manuals for troubleshooting procedures for your hot melt system. Problem Possible Cause Corrective Action 1. No adhesive output from gun modules 2. Gun underheats or overheats No input power Low or no input air pressure to solenoid valve Solenoid valve malfunctioning or power supply to solenoid valve insufficient Clogged gun nozzle, module, or manifold. Failed heater Failed sensor or thermistor Make sure the gun cordset connection is tight and the solenoid valve power supply is turned on. Check the gun air pressure setting. Check the solenoid valve and the power supply to the valve. Clean the nozzle. If cleaning the nozzle does not solve the problem, replace the gun module. If that does not solve the problem, replace the gun. Replace the heater. Check the sensor or thermistor resistance. The sensor resistance should be 108 ohms at 22 C (72 F) and 165 ohms at 177 C (350 F). The thermistor resistance should be 100K ohms at 25 C (77 F) and 1000 ohms at 175 C (347 F). If the sensor or thermistor is defective, replace the cordset. Cleaning Nozzles WARNING: Risk of burns. Relieve hydrualic pressure. 1. Turn off the pump and relieve hydraulic pressure. Refer to your equipment-specific manual. 2. Place a drain pan under all guns. 6. Use a wrench to loosen the nozzles; then remove the nozzles by hand. 7. Place the nozzles in a container of Type-R cleaning fluid and heat the fluid above the adhesive s melting temperature. 3. Manually trigger the guns until they are drained of adhesive. 4. Turn off the unit. 5. Turn off the gun air supply and the solenoid valve power supply. 8. Remove the nozzles from the cleaning fluid and clean them using a pin-type probe. WARNING: Hot! Risk of burns. Wear heat-protective clothing, safety goggles, and heat-protective gloves. 9. Reinstall the nozzles on the guns and restore the system to normal operation. Issued 3/ H440-MA-02
6 Operation Startup Shutdown CAUTION: Risk of equipment damage. H-440 gun modules operate as air-open, air-close valves. Nordson Corporation recommends turning off the gun air supply during system statup to prevent unexpected pressure buildup in the gun module and manifold caused by the expansion of the cold adhesive as it melts. 1. Make sure the gun air supply is turned off. 2. Turn on the unit and allow it to reach operating temperature. Refer to your equipment-specific manual for the startup procedure. 3. Turn on the gun air supply. 4. Turn on the solenoid valve power supply, enable any triggering devices, and start the production line. Adhesive Application Adjustment To modify how adhesive is applied: Adjust the adhesive temperature. Refer to the adhesive manufacturer s data sheet. Adjust the gun distance from product. The distance should be 13 mm (0.5 in.) or less. 1. Stop the production line. WARNING: Risk of burns. Relieve hydrualic pressure. 2. Turn off the pump and relieve hydraulic pressure. Refer to your equipment-specific manual. WARNING: Hot! Risk of burns. Wear heat-protective clothing, safety goggles, and heat-protective gloves. 3. Place a drain pan under all guns. 4. Manually trigger the guns until they are drained of adhesive. 5. Turn off the unit. 6. Turn off the solenoid valve power supply. 7. Turn off the gun air supply. 8. Manually trigger the gun solenoid valves to relieve gun air pressure. Adjust the hydraulic pressure. The operating range is bar ( psi). Adjust the gun air pressure. The operating range is bar (50 80 psi). Change your nozzle selection. Â NOTE: Nordson Corporation recommends selecting a nozzle with a hole size and length that allows the guns to operate above 28 bar (400 psi).
