0-4 Introduction Vapors and Gases Ensure that vapors and gases do not exceed the prescribed limits. If necessary, exhaust vapors and gases and/or provide sufficient ventilation of the work space. Substrate The substrate should be free of dust, grease and moisture. The suitable material, optimum working conditions, and possible pre-treatment of the substrate must be determined by testing. Processing Temperature When materials require heating, adherence to the prescribed processing temperature is imperative to ensure the quality of the application. It may not be exceeded! Overheating can cause material coking or cracking, resulting in malfunctioning or unit failure. Material should always be melted gently. Extended, unnecessary temperature load should be avoided. The temperature should be reduced during breaks in work. The temperature in the tank should be attuned to the material consumption. Thus it is close to the prescribed processing temperature for high material consumption and lower for lower consumption. When materials are processed cold, take into consideration the shear heat and the ambient temperature; cool if necessary. HMI02_EN_C Nordson Corporation

Introduction 2-1 Section 2 Introduction Intended Use Particularly watersoluble adhesives, can be sprayed with the LS 373 liquid adhesive gun. Any other use is considered as not intended and is carried out at the operator s own risk. The manufacturer is not responsible for any damage or injury resulting from unintended use; the operator alone is liable. Observance and application of operating, maintenance and repair requirements set out by the manufacturer are considered part of the intended use. The product described here may only be operated, serviced and repaired by persons familiar with the product and who have been informed of the potential dangers involved. The appropriate accident prevention regulations must be observed as well as any applicable, commonly accepted safety and industrial health regulations. The manufacturer is by no means liable for any damages resulting from alterations effected without any authorization. Safety Instructions Prior to installation and first operation of the unit it is necessary to read and follow the safety instructions. The general safety instructions are provided in the documentation folder or are a part of this manual. The specific safety instructions are part of this instruction manual Nordson Corporation LS 373
2-2 Introduction General Particularly watersoluble adhesives, can be sprayed with the LS 373 liquid adhesive gun. The application width is determined by the spraying distance. The min. application width is about 5 mm, the max. width about 50 mm. The adhesive gun has 3 connections for adhesive, spray air and control air. The needle stroke can be adjusted to exact adhesive quantity requirements by a knurled screw at the upper part of the adhesive gun, even during operation. Inner and outer spray air can be adjusted separately at two adjustment screws integrated in the body of the adhesive gun. The spray air impulses are triggered externally. The application quantity is controlled by adhesive pressure, nozzle diameter and stroke. For control, a 3/2 way solenoid should be used, which receives its impulses from limit switches, reflection type light barriers, etc. A precision mounting bracket for setting the adhesive gun into most working positions can be supplied. Method of Operation After the flange-mounted, electrical solenoid valve has been electrically opened (110 VAC, 220VAC or 24VDC), control air is supplied via the solenoid valve to the air pistons in the control section of the adhesive guns and the nozzle is opened as the nozzle stem is raised. The closing process can be triggered by both compressed air or a closing spring. Please note that the spray air must always have a lower pressure than the control air. Intermittent Application The application of adhesive can be carried out either continuously or intermittently. To do this, the solenoid valve transfers the control pulses to the air pistons in the control section. The control air pressure must be adapted to the switching frequency used; this pressure must be 6 bar from 5 intermissions per second. LS Nordson Corporation
Installation 3-1 Section 3 Installation WARNING: Allow only qualified personnel to perform the following tasks. Observe and follow the safety instructions in this document and all other related documentation. Mounting the Adhesive Gun on Equipment Due to possible self-vibrations caused by intermittent operation the adhesive gun should be installed strong and sturdy. Transmission of vibrations from the equipment to the gun should be avoided as much as possible. Connections Connecting the Solenoid Connection is made using the plug supplied which must be screwed tight after being connected. The standard solenoid valves are designed for 24 V DC, 110 V AC or 220 V AC. The decisive factor is the voltage specified on the solenoid valve ID plate Nordson Corporation LS 373
3-2 Installation B C A LS373 A0160A Fig. 3-1 Basic System Layout Connecting the Control Air Connect the control air with maximum 6 bar to the control air inlet (B). Connecting the Spray Air The air nozzles are supplied separately. Please install these after removing the swivel nuts (pair of holes at right-angles to direction of application). Screw the swivel nuts on again. Connect the spray air to the spray air connector (C) at max. 6 bar. The spray air must not be oiled. Connecting the Material Line Connect the material hose from the pressurized adhesive tank or pump to the material inlet (A). LS Nordson Corporation
Installation 3-3 Adjusting Instructions Adjusting Adhesive Flow/Needle Stroke Adjusting the required adhesive flow or the application pattern is achieved by: Adjusting the adhesive flow capacity (pressurized adhesive container or pump). Adjusting the needle stroke. Turning the adjustment screws for inner and outer air. Distance of the adhesive gun from the substrate. Optimum adhesive application is obtained by coordinated adjustment. The maximum stroke of the needle and with it the adhesive flow through the nozzle is regulated by the needle stroke adjustment (D). A counter-clockwise turn increases the adhesive flow. A clockwise turn decreases the adhesive flow Nordson Corporation LS 373
3-4 Installation Adjusting Spray Air D A, I LS373 A0160A Fig. 3-2 Basic System Layout Adjust the spray pattern with the adjustment screws A and I for outer (A) and inner (I) air so that the required spray pattern is obtained. Turn the inner air adjustment screw I depending on required spray pattern. Turn the outer air adjustment screw A depending on required spraying width. NOTE: In order to avoid solidification of the adhesive in the nozzle during prolonged standstills the nozzle tip should be covered airtight (e.g. with grease or Vaseline). LS Nordson Corporation
Operation 4-1 Section 4 Operation WARNING: Allow only qualified personnel to perform the following tasks. Observe and follow the safety instructions in this document and all other related documentation. General Adhesive Processing Instructions NOTE: The following information is especially important for processing of liquid adhesives, however, they can also be transferred to other materials. Always pre-test before employing your unit. The surface to be bonded should be at room temperature and free of dust, grease and moisture. The suitable material, optimum working conditions, and possible pre-treatment of the substrate are to be determined by testing. Some substrates contain softeners and other components which may become volatile later. Sometimes surfaces are treated with wax, lubricants, etc. Without pre-treatment/tests adhesive bonds can fail either immediately or later. Observe any comment sheets concerning the process to the material used. Compatibility of Different Types of Adhesives NOTE: Not all types of adhesive are compatible. Degradation of the adhesive followed by function faults and unit damage can be the result of improper use of the adhesive. We are the only supplier of your unit and cannot be liable for damages to equipment if adhesives coalesce due to incorrect handling. In case of doubt and/or if planning to change the adhesive, please contact the adhesive manufacturer, our head office, or one of our representatives Nordson Corporation LS 373
4-2 Operation LS Nordson Corporation
Maintenance 5-1 Section 5 Maintenance WARNING: Allow only qualified personnel to perform the following tasks. Observe and follow the safety instructions in this document and all other related documentation. Your liquid adhesive gun is easy to maintain and almost maintenance-free. Under normal operating conditions all components have a long durability. WARNING: Disconnect material, power and air supply! WARNING: Always use protective gloves! Ensure that the material to be applied is in a clean, filtered state. The control air should also be clean and, in certain conditions, lightly oiled when supplied to the equipment. Individual operating conditions and different application material require a corresponding minimum effort for maintenance. For outside cleaning procedures, e.g. nozzle tips, never use sharp metallic tools but rather soft brushes. During maintenance and repair work, keep both the workplace and the gun to be repaired clean. Clogged guns should be flushed thoroughly with an adhesive-compatible detergent. Particularly if nozzle stem, seals or nozzle should be replaced. In case of major repair work, the gun should be removed from the equipment Nordson Corporation LS 373
5-2 Maintenance Disassembling an Adhesive Gun Disassembling with Solidified Adhesive Never disassemble the adhesive gun if the adhesive inside is solidified! It is highly possible that sensitive component parts will be damaged. We recommend to place the adhesive gun without solenoid for 1 or 2 days in warm water so that the adhesive can soften. Repeat this procedure several times, if necessary. If it is then still impossible to disassemble the adhesive gun, send it to us for repair. All employed O-rings and other sealing elements are of the highest quality. Contact us before using other qualities. Disassembling with Fluid Adhesive NOTE: Disconnect control air. Remove solenoid and nozzle. Flush adhesive gun through the material inlet with warm water until the discharged water contains no more adhesive residues. Be very careful when disassembling individual parts! Remove sealing screw with an exact fitting screwdriver by counter clockwise turns. Removing the sealing screw with unsuitable tools or turning it the wrong direction can lead to damages of the sealing screw or the body. After disassembly, check all parts, especially the sealing elements, for damages or wear. Cleaning and Assembling Adhesive Guns Prior to assembly, all parts must be cleaned thoroughly with water or a mild vinegar solution. NOTE: When reassembling already used nozzles flush the nozzles with detergent so that no material residues remain. The needle must be cleaned of all residue particles. Failure to do so will cause immediate leakage and may result in permanent damage to the adhesive gun. Do not use metallic or sharp tools when assembling O-rings. Prior to assembly grease the O-rings with a lubricant (technical Vaseline). LS Nordson Corporation
