13 Volume Metering Head 9 Pneumatic Connection 1 The application module operates with nonlubricated, filtered, dry compressed air. The operating air pressure for the application module is set specifically for each application on an external compressed air control valve. The air pressure control valve is not part of the volume metering head. 1. Connect a regulated air supply to the compressed air fitting (1). Recommended pressure range: Box 7 = A B C, D, E F G H bar , psi Limiting Pump Outlet Pressure CAUTION: Risk of bursting! The pump outlet pressure may not exceed 170 bar / 2465 psi, and it may never be higher than the permitted inlet pressure of the application module used: Box 7 = A B C, D, E F G H bar > psi > over 121 C / 250 F: 103 over 121 C / 250 F: 1500 A threshold switch in the electrical cabinet limits the pump outlet pressure. Refer to the electrical cabinet manual.
14 10 Volume Metering Head Connecting Heated Hose Using Second Open-end Wrench Use a second open-end wrench when connecting and disconnecting the heated hose. This prevents the hose connection on the unit from turning. Connecting If cold material can be found in the hose connection, these components (1, 2) must be heated until the material softens (approx. 80 C, 176 F). 1. First connect the hose (3) electrically to the unit. For more than one hose: Every hose connection is allocated to a corresponding receptacle. Do not mistakenly exchange! 2. Heat the system and hose to approx. 80 C (176 F). 3. Screw on heated hose. NOTE: Close unused hose connections with proper Nordson port plugs. Disconnecting ATTENTION: System and material pressurized. Relieve system pressure before disconnecting heated hoses. Failure to observe can result in serious burns. ATTENTION: Hot! Risk of burns. Wear goggles and heat-protective gloves. 1. Turn off material supply. 2. Set the preselector Manual / 0 / Auto on the separate electrical cabinet to Manual. 3. On the separate electrical cabinet, set the motor speed of the volume metering head to a low value. 4. Place a container under the application nozzle of the volume metering head. 5. Electrically trigger solenoid valve: Hold down the button Motor on on the electrical cabinet until no more adhesive flows out. 6. Properly dispose of material according to local regulations.
15 Volume Metering Head 11 Operation ATTENTION: Allow only qualified personnel to perform the following tasks. Observe and follow the safety instructions in this document and all other related documentation. CAUTION: Trigger the solenoid valve only when the volume metering head is heated to operating temperature! Seals in the application module can become damaged if the adhesive is too cold. CAUTION: The motor may not be triggered until the application head has reached the selected setpoint temperature. Important When Using Polyurethane Application Materials (PUR) It is imperative that the following guidelines are complied with when processing polyurethane application materials (PUR): Wear respiratory protection when the maximum permissible concentration of hazardous substances is exceeded. During interruptions in production or breaks, the temperature should be reduced and the nozzles of the application heads covered with Vaseline or dipped in a suitable oil. Before prolonged standstill of the application system, purge with a suitable cleaning agent. Use only a cleaning agent recommended by the material manufacturer. Close open material connections airtight. Setting Temperatures Maximum Operating Temperature The procedure for setting the temperatures is described in the temperature controller manual. The temperature controllers are located in the melter system electrical cabinet or in the separate volume metering head electrical cabinet. Box 13 = X H C F NOTE: The maximum operating temperature may not be exceeded. Nordson will assume no warranty or liability for damage resulting from incorrect temperature settings.
16 12 Volume Metering Head Setting Nozzle Stem Stroke Some application modules are equipped with a nozzle stem adjustment. It is used for fine adjustment of the adhesive application quantity or the adhesive flow quantity. ATTENTION: Hazard! The stem stroke adjustment knob has no upper setting limit. If compressed air is connected, never turn the adjusting knob all the way up; it may jump out. Max mm Max in. CAUTION: The stem stroke may only be adjusted when the volume metering head is heated up! Failure to observe can cause damage to seals. NOTE: If the nozzle stem stroke is unintentionally closed all the way, overpressure shutdown of the electrical cabinet is triggered. NOTE: The stem stroke adjustment knob has no upper setting limit; starting from the bottom, it may only be turned a maximum of 2¼ revolutions upward. This corresponds to a nozzle stem stroke of maximum 1.2 mm. Failure to observe can result in - among other things - increased wear and malfunctioning. Experience has shown that a stroke adjustment of max. 0.5 to 0.6 mm (which corresponds to 1 turn) has proven to be sufficient. Nozzle stem stroke Flow rate Counterclockwise (+) = increase Increase Clockwise (-) = decrease Decrease
