16 12 E400 Electric Applicator Description The E400 electric applicator applies hot melt adhesive to a product. The applicator is equipped with platinum resistance temperature detectors (RTDs). Four cordsets separate the temperature sensors (RTDs) and heaters for both the heated adhesive and air manifolds. Figure 2 shows the key parts of a typical E400 applicator. Driven by an electric applicator driver (usually an E400 driver), the E400 applicator provides all-electric actuation, eliminating the need for compressed air (except in spray applications). Adhesive enters the inlet port of the applicator and is directed through the manifold into the module seat, which is sealed by the end of the armature. When the applicator coil is energized by the driver, the armature lifts off of the seat, allowing the adhesive to flow from the applicator. The armature is held off the seat by the magnetic attraction of the coil. When the driver de-energizes the coil, the coil loses its magnetic attraction and the armature is forced back into the seat by a return spring, stopping the adhesive flow. Because the E400 applicator uses a Universal module, it can be configured with an appropriate nozzle for the types of spray applications described in Table 3. An adapter is required for the Controlled Fiberization (CF) application. The use of untrained or inexperienced personnel to operate or service the equipment can result in injury, including death, to themselves and others, and damage to the equipment. The applicator may be mounted in any direction. Two mounting holes are provided on the upper surface of the applicator. Regardless of the mounting method, follow these installation guidelines: Position the applicator as close to the product as possible to achieve the best adhesive bead placement and quality. Make sure the mounting hardware is insulated from the applicator so that heat transfer is minimized. Protect the applicator from vibration and secure it so it will not change position during application. If you are installing the hose vertically, replace the straight hose connector on the applicator with a 45- or 90-degree connector. Tighten the connector to Nm (7 10 ft-lb). Refer to Hose Connectors under Parts for the 45- and 90-degree hose connector part numbers. Follow the hose routing and installation guidelines provided in the melter manual. Insulate the hose-to-applicator joint. An insulation cuff is provided with the applicator. Connect a supply of dry, regulated, unlubricated air to the pattern air inlet. Nordson Corporation recommends installing an air pressure regulator and filter in the pattern air supply line that is capable of regulating the pattern air pressure up to a 56.6 nlm (2 scfm) flow rate per module. Install an electric applicator driver and connect the module control cordset on the applicator to the driver. Nordson recommends using the E400 driver. Refer to E400 Drivers under Parts for the E400 driver, software, and applicator-to-driver cable part numbers.
