This section contains recommendations and practices applicable to the safe installation, operation, and maintenance (hereafter referred to as use ) of the product described in this document (hereafter referred to as equipment ). Additional safety information, in the form of task-specific safety alert messages, appears as appropriate throughout this document. WARNING: Risk of Burns! Do not remove the nozzle when the system is pressurized. Removing the nozzle when the system is pressurized will cause hot melt to free-flow from the gun. Relieve system pressure before removing the nozzle. Failure to relieve system pressure can result in personal injury. WARNING: Failure to follow the safety messages, recommendations, and hazard avoidance procedures provided in this document can result in personal injury, including death, or damage to equipment or property. Safety Information Research and evaluate safety information from all applicable sources, including the owner-specific safety policy, best industry practices, governing regulations, material manufacturer s product information, and this document. Make safety information available to equipment users in accordance with governing regulations. Contact the authority having jurisdiction for information. Maintain safety information, including the safety labels affixed to the equipment, in readable condition. Instructions, Requirements, and Standards Ensure that the equipment is used in accordance with the information provided in this document, governing codes and regulations, and best industry practices. If applicable, receive approval from your facility s engineering or safety department, or other similar function within your organization, before installing or operating the equipment for the first time. Provide appropriate emergency and first aid equipment. Conduct safety inspections to ensure required practices are being followed. Re-evaluate safety practices and procedures whenever changes are made to the process or equipment Nordson Corporation

7 e.dot Gun 3 User Qualifications Equipment owners are responsible for ensuring that users: receive safety training appropriate to their job function as directed by governing regulations and best industry practices are familiar with the equipment owner s safety and accident prevention policies and procedures receive, equipment- and task-specific training from another qualified individual NOTE: Nordson can provide equipment-specific installation, operation, and maintenance training. Contact your Nordson representative for information possess industry- and trade-specific skills and a level of experience appropriate to their job function are physically capable of performing their job function and are not under the influence of any substance that degrades their mental capacity or physical capabilities Applicable Industry Safety Practices The following safety practices apply to the use of the equipment in the manner described in this document. The information provided here is not meant to include all possible safety practices, but represents the best safety practices for equipment of similar hazard potential used in similar industries. Intended Use of the Equipment Use the equipment only for the purposes described and within the limits specified in this document. Do not modify the equipment. Do not use incompatible materials or unapproved auxiliary devices. Contact your Nordson representative if you have any questions on material compatibility or the use of non-standard auxiliary devices Nordson Corporation

8 4 e.dot Gun Instructions and Safety Messages Read and follow the instructions provided in this document and other referenced documents. Familiarize yourself with the location and meaning of the safety warning labels and tags affixed to the equipment. Refer to Safety Labels and Tags at the end of this section. If you are unsure of how to use the equipment, contact your Nordson representative for assistance. Installation Practices Install the equipment in accordance with the instructions provided in this document and in the documentation provided with auxiliary devices. Ensure that the equipment is rated for the environment in which it will be used and that the processing characteristics of the material will not create a hazardous environment. Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the material. If the required installation configuration does not match the installation instructions, contact your Nordson representative for assistance. Position the equipment for safe operation. Observe the requirements for clearance between the equipment and other objects. Install lockable power disconnects to isolate the equipment and all independently powered auxiliary devices from their power sources. Properly ground all equipment. Contact your local building code enforcement agency for specific requirements. Ensure that fuses of the correct type and rating are installed in fused equipment. Contact the authority having jurisdiction to determine the requirement for installation permits or inspections Nordson Corporation

9 e.dot Gun 5 Operating Practices Familiarize yourself with the location and operation of all safety devices and indicators. Confirm that the equipment, including all safety devices (guards, interlocks, etc.), is in good working order and that the required environmental conditions exist. Use the personal protective equipment (PPE) specified for each task. Refer to Equipment Safety Information or the material manufacturer s instructions and MSDS for PPE requirements. Do not use equipment that is malfunctioning or shows signs of a potential malfunction. Maintenance and Repair Practices Perform scheduled maintenance activities at the intervals described in this document. Relieve system hydraulic and pneumatic pressure before servicing the equipment. De-energize the equipment and all auxiliary devices before servicing the equipment. Use only new factory-authorized refurbished or replacement parts. Read and comply with the manufacturer s instructions and the MSDS supplied with equipment cleaning compounds. NOTE: MSDSs for cleaning compounds that are sold by Nordson are available at or by calling your Nordson representative. Confirm the correct operation of all safety devices before placing the equipment back into operation. Dispose of waste cleaning compounds and residual process materials according to governing regulations. Refer to the applicable MSDS or contact the authority having jurisdiction for information. Keep equipment safety warning labels clean. Replace worn or damaged labels Nordson Corporation

10 6 e.dot Gun Equipment Safety Information This equipment safety information is applicable to the following types of Nordson equipment: hot melt and cold adhesive application equipment and all related accessories pattern controllers, timers, detection and verification systems, and all other optional process control devices Equipment Shutdown To safely complete many of the procedures described in this document, the equipment must first be shut down. The level of shut down required varies by the type of equipment in use and the procedure being completed. If required, shut down instructions are specified at the start of the procedure. The levels of shut down are: Relieving System Hydraulic Pressure Completely relieve system hydraulic pressure before breaking any hydraulic connection or seal. Refer to the melter-specific product manual for instructions on relieving system hydraulic pressure. De-energizing the System Isolate the system (melter, hoses, guns, and optional devices) from all power sources before accessing any unprotected high-voltage wiring or connection point. 1. Turn off the equipment and all auxiliary devices connected to the equipment (system). 2. To prevent the equipment from being accidentally energized, lock and tag the disconnect switch(es) or circuit breaker(s) that provide input electrical power to the equipment and optional devices. NOTE: Government regulations and industry standards dictate specific requirements for the isolation of hazardous energy sources. Refer to the appropriate regulation or standard Nordson Corporation

11 e.dot Gun 7 Disabling the Guns All electrical or mechanical devices that provide an activation signal to the guns, gun solenoid valve(s), or the melter pump must be disabled before work can be performed on or around a gun that is connected to a pressurized system. 1. Turn off or disconnect the gun triggering device (pattern controller, timer, PLC, etc.). 2. Disconnect the input signal wiring to the gun solenoid valve(s). 3. Reduce the air pressure to the gun solenoid valve(s) to zero; then relieve the residual air pressure between the regulator and the gun. General Safety Warnings and Cautions Table 1 contains the general safety warnings and cautions that apply to Nordson hot melt and cold adhesive equipment. Review the table and carefully read all of the warnings or cautions that apply to the type of equipment described in this manual. Equipment types are designated in Table 1 as follows: HM = Hot melt (melters, hoses, guns, etc.) PC = Process control CA = Cold adhesive (dispensing pumps, pressurized container, and guns) 2006 Nordson Corporation

Before processing any polyurethane reactive (PUR) hot melt or solvent-based material through a compatible Nordson melter, read and comply with the material s MSDS. Ensure that the material s processing temperature and flashpoints will not be exceeded and that all requirements for safe handling, ventilation, first aid, and personal protective equipment are met. Failure to comply with MSDS requirements can cause personal injury, including death. HM WARNING: Reactive material! Never clean any aluminum component or flush Nordson equipment with halogenated hydrocarbon fluids. Nordson melters and guns contain aluminum components that may react violently with halogenated hydrocarbons. The use of halogenated hydrocarbon compounds in Nordson equipment can cause personal injury, including death. HM, CA WARNING: System pressurized! Relieve system hydraulic pressure before breaking any hydraulic connection or seal. Failure to relieve the system hydraulic pressure can result in the uncontrolled release of hot melt or cold adhesive, causing personal injury. HM WARNING: Molten material! Wear eye or face protection, clothing that protects exposed skin, and heat-protective gloves when servicing equipment that contains molten hot melt. Even when solidified, hot melt can still cause burns. Failure to wear appropriate personal protective equipment can result in personal injury. HM, PC WARNING: Equipment starts automatically! Remote triggering devices are used to control automatic hot melt guns. Before working on or near an operating gun, disable the gun s triggering device and remove the air supply to the gun s solenoid valve(s). Failure to disable the gun s triggering device and remove the supply of air to the solenoid valve(s) can result in personal injury. HM, CA, PC WARNING: Risk of electrocution! Even when switched off and electrically isolated at the disconnect switch or circuit breaker, the equipment may still be connected to energized auxiliary devices. De-energize and electrically isolate all auxiliary devices before servicing the equipment. Failure to properly isolate electrical power to auxiliary equipment before servicing the equipment can result in personal injury, including death. Continued Nordson Corporation

Nordson adhesive equipment is not rated for use in explosive environments and should not be used with solvent-based adhesives that can create an explosive atmosphere when processed. Refer to the MSDS for the adhesive to determine its processing characteristics and limitations. The use of incompatible solvent-based adhesives or the improper processing of solvent-based adhesives can result in personal injury, including death. HM, CA, PC WARNING: Allow only personnel with appropriate training and experience to operate or service the equipment. The use of untrained or inexperienced personnel to operate or service the equipment can result in injury, including death, to themselves and others and can damage to the equipment. HM CAUTION: Hot surfaces! Avoid contact with the hot metal surfaces of guns, hoses, and certain components of the melter. If contact can not be avoided, wear heat-protective gloves and clothing when working around heated equipment. Failure to avoid contact with hot metal surfaces can result in personal injury. HM CAUTION: Some Nordson melters are specifically designed to process polyurethane reactive (PUR) hot melt. Attempting to process PUR in equipment not specifically designed for this purpose can damage the equipment and cause premature reaction of the hot melt. If you are unsure of the equipment s ability to process PUR, contact your Nordson representative for assistance. HM, CA CAUTION: Before using any cleaning or flushing compound on or in the equipment, read and comply with the manufacturer s instructions and the MSDS supplied with the compound. Some cleaning compounds can react unpredictably with hot melt or cold adhesive, resulting in damage to the equipment. HM CAUTION: Nordson hot melt equipment is factory tested with Nordson Type R fluid that contains polyester adipate plasticizer. Certain hot melt materials can react with Type R fluid and form a solid gum that can clog the equipment. Before using the equipment, confirm that the hot melt is compatible with Type R fluid Nordson Corporation

14 10 e.dot Gun Other Safety Precautions Do not use an open flame to heat hot melt system components. Check high pressure hoses daily for signs of excessive wear, damage, or leaks. Never point a dispensing handgun at yourself or others. Suspend dispensing handguns by their proper suspension point. First Aid If molten hot melt comes in contact with your skin: 1. Do NOT attempt to remove the molten hot melt from your skin. 2. Immediately soak the affected area in clean, cold water until the hot melt has cooled. 3. Do NOT attempt to remove the solidified hot melt from your skin. 4. In case of severe burns, treat for shock. 5. Seek expert medical attention immediately. Give the MSDS for the hot melt to the medical personnel providing treatment Nordson Corporation

16 12 e.dot Gun Description The e.dot gun is a compact, high-speed, precision hot melt adhesive gun that is designed for use in applications requiring small dots of adhesive. The e.dot gun is used with the following Nordson components to form an adhesive dot application system: Nordson small diameter e.dot hose e driver, e driver2, 3, 4 (2, 3, or 4 modules), or the LA4400 EPC-30 pattern control (optional) Interface cables that connect the driver/pattern control to the e.dot hose NOTE: The components listed above are ordered and shipped separately from the e.dot gun. Figure 1 illustrates the various combination of drivers/pattern controls (1), cabling (2), small diameter e.dot hot melt hoses (3), and e.dot gun configurations (4) that can be assembled to form a complete adhesive dot application system. Intended Uses Unintended Uses The e.dot gun is designed for use in industrial applications that require the deposition of a precise dot of hot melt adhesive onto a moving substate with small diameter hoses designed and manufactured by Nordson Corporation with electric gun drivers and pattern controllers designed and manufactured by Nordson Corporation The e.dot gun is not designed for industrial applications that require the deposition of a bead of hot melt adhesive onto a moving substate use in explosive environments 2006 Nordson Corporation

17 e.dot Gun 13 Auxiliary Devices and Spare Parts e.dot guns should only be connected to approved auxiliary devices. Use only new Nordson replacement parts or approved factory refurbished parts. Figure 1 e.dot gun system 2006 Nordson Corporation

18 14 e.dot Gun Installation Complete the following four steps to install an dot application system: 1. Mount the gun 2. Mount the driver/pattern control 3. Connect the hose 4. Connect cordsets Installation Guidelines Use the following installation guidelines to achieve optimal gun performance. Nozzle clearance 3 6 mm ( in.) Mounting Mount the gun so that the nozzle will be 3 6 mm ( 1 / 8 1 / 4 in.) from the substrate. Use a 9.5 mm ( 3 / 8 in.) mounting bar. Allow for sufficient room to remove the filter. Filter clearance requirements are illustrated in Technical Data. Provide sufficient space for wrench clearance around the nozzle. Mount the gun on a rigid support that is isolated from external vibrations and that prevents the gun from rotating. Insulate the gun from the support using the insulator provided with the gun. Hydraulic Connections Use only one fitting to connect the e.dot hose to the e.dot gun. Insulate the hose-to-gun joint Nordson Corporation

19 e.dot Gun 15 Mounting the Gun See Figure 2 and Figure 12 or Slide the gun mounting clamps (1) onto a 9-mm ( 3 / 8 in.) mounting bar (2), or disassemble the clamps and reassemble them (with the gun and insulators) onto the mounting bar. Ensure that the insulator (3) is placed between the body of the gun and the clamps. See Figure 3. Alternately, you can mount the gun using the two 4.2 mm (0.165 in.) mounting holes provided in the gun body. 2. Securely tighten the mounting clamp. 20 16 e.dot Gun Mounting the Gun Driver/Pattern Control Connecting the Hose Refer to the following product manuals for information about how to mount the gun driver or pattern control. P/N e driver P/N e driver2, e driver3, and e driver4 P/N LA4400 NOTE: Refer to the user s guide (P/N ) that is shipped with the e.dot hose for information about installing the hose. CAUTION: Always use two wrenches, one on each fitting to tighten the hose fitting. See Figure Connect the swivel fitting on the e.dot hose to the fitting located on the top or rear of the gun body. Tighten securely. 2. Connect the swivel fitting on the opposite end of the hose to the melter. Refer to the product manual provided with the melter for information about connecting hoses. 21 e.dot Gun 17 Connecting Hose Cordsets See Figure Connect the hose cordset to the gun cordset (The gun-end of the hose has only one cordset.). Figure 5 Connecting the hose cordset to the gun cordset See Figure Connect the appropriate interface cable to the hose cordset at the melter-end of the e.dot hose (The melter-end of the hose has two cordsets). 3. Connect the other end of the interface cable to the driver/pattern control as follows: LA4400 or e driver2, 3, or 4 Connect the interface cable plug to the current mode output receptacle. The interface cable is 10 m (33 ft.) in length. e driver Connect the fly-lead end of the interface cable to the input terminal block (removable) that is located on the top of the e driver. Refer to Tables 3, 4 and 5 for wiring information. The interface cable is 15 m (49 ft.) in length. NOTE: Extension cable P/N can be used to extend the distance between the driver/pattern control interface cable and the hose cordset by 10 m (33 ft.) Nordson Corporation

25 e.dot Gun 21 Connecting an EPC-30 to the e driver2, 3, or 4 (Optional) An Eclipse EPC-30 pattern control can be connected to the e driver2, 3, and 4 to provide an input signal. Figure 8 illustrates how to wire an e driver2, 3, and 4, which has an internal 24 VDC power supply, to an EPC-30 for a single-gun application. If an e driver2, 3, or 4 without an internal power supply is used, you must provide an external 24 VDC power source to the EPC-30. NOTE: A 24 VDC power supply can be added to e drivers that have no power supply. 26 22 e.dot Gun Operation The e.dot gun is now ready for operation. Melter Adjustment Adjust the set-point temperature of the gun to a maximum of 185 C (365 F). Refer to the melter product manual for information about how to adjust the gun set-point temperature. Driver Electrical Adjustment The e.dot gun is designed for optimal performance when operated with the electrical characteristics shown in Table 6. 27 e.dot Gun 23 Dot Size Adjustment e driver The relative size of the adhesive dot that is dispensed from an e.dot gun will increase as the duration that the gun remains open increases. Before operating the e.dot gun, you must set the duration on the driver. On an e driver and an e driver2, 3, and 4, the duration is referred to as DOT Time. On an LA4400, the duration is referred to as On Time. e driver and e driver2, 3, and 4 Use the DOT time switch to set the DOT time. The top switch has a resolution of 0.5 ms and a range of ms. The bottom switch has a resolution of 0.05 ms and a range of ms. Together, both switches provide a DOT time range of ms. DOT time adjustment swtiches (e driver and e driver2, 3, 4 only) NOTE: The DOT time function is turned off when both switches are set to 0.0 ms. LA4400 To control and e.dot gun using an LA4400, set the LA4400 to Dotted mode and enter an appropriate On time. Refer to the LA4400 product manual or help screens for additional information. Pattern Control Adjustment EPC-30 Refer to the EPC-30 product manual for information about how to set up a pattern. LA4400 Set the desired gun to operate in Dotted mode. 28 24 e.dot Gun Stroke Adjustment The gun is equipped with a stroke adjustment dial. The stroke is factory-set to 0.2 mm. Under normal operating conditions, it is not necessary to adjust the stroke of the gun. Stroke adjustment is only required if the gun is disassembled. Refer to Maintenance, Rezeroing the Gun. 29 e.dot Gun 25 Troubleshooting WARNING: Risk of Burns! Do not remove the nozzle when the system is pressurized. Removing the nozzle when the system is pressurized will cause hot melt to free-flow from the gun. Relieve system pressure before removing the nozzle. Failure to relieve system pressure can result in personal injury. WARNING: Risk of personal injury. This equipment contains pressurized hot melt material and high voltage circuits. Read the Safety information provided in this document before completing any troubleshooting procedure. Failure to observe safety messages and hazard-avoidance procedures can result in personal injury, including death. Troubleshooting Table The following table lists the gun problems that are most likely to occur, the possible causes of each problem, and steps for corrective action. Where applicable, cross-references are made to expanded diagnostic procedures (DPs) provided later in this section or to other sections of this manual. Use only an industrial grade, regulated, electrical heating device that is designed to heat industrial fluids. Personal injury or property damage can result if Type R cleaning fluid is heated with an open flame or in an unregulated heating device. 1. Soak the components in Nordson Type R cleaning fluid that has been heated above the melting point of the hot melt. 2. Remove the components from the cleaning fluid and clean thoroughly with a soft cloth to remove all foreign material Nordson Corporation

34 30 e.dot Gun Cleaning/Replacing the Nozzle and the Armature (contd) CAUTION: Use the correct size precision pin probe to clean Nordson nozzles. The use of non-precision or incorrectly sized probes may damage the nozzle. The Nordson nozzle cleaning kit (P/N ) contains a variety of probe sizes. 3. At the outlet of the nozzle, insert a correctly sized cleaning probe. 4. With a clean cloth, firmly grip the cleaning probe, then pull the probe out of the nozzle, wiping the probe clean. 5. Clean the armature and spring. 6. Inspect all of the components for damage or excessive wear. Replace if necessary. Refer to Parts, Gun Service Kits. Cleaning the nozzle NOTE: Over time, the nozzle and the armature and nozzle (seat) will wear down and develop a matched fit. If either the nozzle or the armature needs to be replaced, Nordson Corporation recommends that all three components (nozzle, armature, and spring) be replaced. Re-install the components 1. Turn the stroke adjustment dial to 0.3 mm. 2. Re-install the spring and armature into the module. CAUTION: Do not overtighten the nozzle. To avoid applying excessive torque to the nozzle, use the shortest wrench available. Stroke adjustement dial 3. Check the nozzle O-ring for damage or deterioration. Replace if necessary. 4. Re-install the nozzle and tighten it to 3 4 Nm (2 3 ft.-lb). 5. Go to Rezeroing the Gun Nordson Corporation

35 e.dot Gun 31 Rezeroing the Gun 1. Heat the gun to operating temperature. See Figure Use a 1. 5 mm hex key to loosen the dial set screw (3) CAUTION: Do not overtighten the stroke adjustment screw. Overtightening the screw can damage the seat. 3. Using the long end of a 3 mm hex key, held by two fingers, turn the stroke adjustment screw (2) clockwise until it just stops. 4. Turn the dial (1) until the 0 indication is aligned with the reference mark (4) on the side of the module. 5. Tighten the dial set screw. 6. Turn the dial to 0.2 mm. 36 32 e.dot Gun Changing the Filter 1. Heat the gun up to its operating temperature. 2. Relieve system pressure. Refer to Safety. 3. Use a 5 mm hex key to remove the filter. NOTE: Dispose of the old filter. Filters are not serviceable. See Figure Apply Never-Seez to the threads of the new filter. 5. Install the new filter and tighten it to N m (1 2 ft-lb). Red/50 mesh (0.011 in.) P/N Yellow/100 mesh (0.006 in.) P/N Purple/200 mesh (0.003 in.) P/N NOTE: To prevent nozzle clogging, ensure that the filter mesh size is smaller than the nozzle orifice size. Remove the two socket head screws (1) that secure the cordset to the manifold. 3. Take hold of the slide cover (8), and pull it away from the manifold. 4. Remove the round connector (2), the heater (3) and RTD (4). Installing the Cordset See Figure Slide the heater (3) into the heater cavity (7). 2. Position the RTD (4) to the left side of the round connector (2), and then slide the RTD into the RTD cavity (6). 3.
