Perform the necessry risk ssessment if the system is likely to be subjected to therml shock. Within design limits, ACO Pipe is prticulrly tolernt of sudden temperture chnges without risk of dmge. Avoid selecting pipe sizes tht re t, or close to, their hydrulic cpcities, s the long-term effects of silt nd scle cn reduce system s hydrulic cpcity over time. For stormwter pplictions, check the geogrphicl loction to confirm the design rinfll intensity. Confirm the ctul grdient of the instlled pipe system. A level (or nerly level) grdient will hve reduced hydrulic performnce compred to instlltions with defined grdients. Assess the fluids to be drined in the system to void corrosion of the pipe nd/or sels. Checklist s follows: Identify ech chemicl contined in the fluid. Estblish chemicl concentrtion(s). Confirm mximum temperture of the solution. Given the bove informtion, the correct sel (see pge 34) cn be selected. Design the system with the minimum number of joints nd limit the number of bends. This will help to reduce both costs nd hydrulic losses. Provide good ccess points for clening/rodding to mintin the hydrulic performnce of the system. Cre should be tken to void dmge, both during nd fter instlltion, s dents nd kinks will ffect the hydrulic performnce. For bove ground pplictions, dmge will lso ffect the system s esthetics. The following stndrds will ssist designers select the correct size of pipe system for prticulr ppliction: EN 12056: Grvity Dringe Systems Inside Buildings. EN 752: Drin nd Sewer Systems Outside Buildings. Refer to pges 8 nd 9 for hydrulic dt for ACO Pipe. Pipework support Instlltion should be in ccordnce with the mnufcturer s recommendtions, EN , EN nd EN 752. Designers must ensure tht ll pipework is supported with brckets ccording to the requirements of AS/NZ 3500 (see pge 35). Pipe weights Engineers should be wre of minimum nd mximum weights when designing verticl stck nd horizontl pipe run systems (see pge 35). 6

7 Project plnning Mintennce Advice is often sought regrding the frequency of clening stinless steel. Generlly, it is usully cceptble to only clen the metl when it is dirty to restore its originl ppernce. This my vry from one to four times yer for externl pplictions or it cn be dily in hygienic or ggressive environments. Stinless steel is esy to clen. Wshing with sop or mild detergent nd wrm wter, followed by cler wter rinse is usully quite dequte for mny industril pplictions. An enhnced esthetic ppernce will be chieved if the clened surfce is finlly wiped dry. If professionl mintennce is required (e.g. for building upgrdes), stinless steel cn be mechniclly clened or electropolished by specilists on site. See pge 38 for more informtion on cre nd mintennce. Operting pressures The ACO Pipe socketed stinless steel pipe systems re fitted with unique, double lip sel, mnufctured from either, NBR or FPM. The double lip sel rrngement provides dded security for the ultimte long term relibility. The ACO Pipe socketed stinless steel pipe systems re tested nd pproved for operting pressures in grvity, siphonic nd vcuum systems. It reched wider pplictions becuse of its suitbility for outdoor use. FPM (Fluoroelstomer) FPM is fluorocrbon nd the best mteril for resistnce to hostile chemicl nd oil environments t norml nd elevted tempertures. This mteril is widely used in the chemicl nd phrmceuticl industries, but is significntly more expensive thn. NBR (Nitrile rubber) NBR hs good wter resistnce, excellent chemicl resistnce nd durbility. Sel instlltion notes 1. If chnging the sel, ensure the correct size nd grde of sel is selected for the ppliction (see tble below). 2. Ensure the sel itself nd the zone round the pipe nd/or fitting receiving the sel is clen, dry nd free from dust, grit nd ny metllic prticles. 3. Insert the dry sel into the pipe nd/ or fitting recess. NOTE: the sel MUST be inserted so the double seling lips fce wy from the opening of the pipe nd/ or fitting. 4. Do not use tools to id the ssembly process otherwise dmge to the pipes, fittings nd sels my occur. Horizontl pipework Generlly, when the pipe is completely full of wter, then the verticl deflection of the pipe between brckets should not exceed 1.5mm. The ssembly of pipe joints is quick nd strightforwrd, requiring only light ppliction of lubricnt (see pge 30) to the chmfered pipe end. 1. Mke sure both ends re clen nd free of dirt. 2. Mke sure tht the correct sel is in plce (see pge 34). 3. Ensure tht the mting ends of the pipes nd fittings re clen nd free from contmintion. Push-fit the pipe end into the socket but do not wedge into the socket recess. Use hlf rottionl movement to the right nd left s the pipes come together. 4. Pipe cutting If it is necessry to dpt or shorten pipe lengths, then the cut must be squre, clen nd redy chmfered. Cutters re vilble from ACO (see pges 32 nd 33). These tools re designed to form the edge bevel on the mle spigoted end of the pipe. Crbon steel wheels re not permitted Socket clmps ACO Pipe pipes nd fittings comprise push-fit socket joints. These will not be ble to resist internl pressure beyond design limits unless precutions re mde to ensure tht the joints do not slide prt. In most cses, pproprite fixing to the building cn overcome this. If it is difficult however, or impossible to fix the pipes to the building, socket clmps (see pge 29) cn prevent the push-fit sockets nd spigot ends from sliding prt in the event of overlod or the genertion of excessive internl pressure. Structurl penetrtions Where it is necessry for pipework to pss through the wlls, structurl decking or floors with wterproofing, the ACO Aplex Wll Sel system is vilble, contct ACO. 36

During instlltion, tke cre to not scrtch the surfce of the stinless with crbon steel. Similrly, void subjecting the stinless steel pipes to welding nd grinding irborne hot prticles, metl shvings, nd chemicls which my cuse corrosion. Soil cover Where pipework is to be instlled beneth wter tble, pply the following soil depths: Pipe dimeters 50, 75, 110 Low density soil 15kg/m³ 400mm High density soil 23 kg/m³ 380mm Pipe dimeters 125, 160, 200, 250 Low soil density 15kg/m³ 580mm High soil density 23kg/m³ 650mm Where the ground is permnently cold s experienced in some Alpine nd southern extremities of Austrli nd New Zelnd, then the dringe my need to be heted. In generl however, the minimum permissible depth to void winter freezing of wter is 800mm. Note tht this recommendtion is pplicble where the ground does thw during spring nd becomes quite wrm during summer. In order to chieve mximum corrosion resistnce, the surfce of the stinless steel must be kept clen. Fctors ffecting mintennce Surfce contmintion nd the formtion of deposits must be prevented in order to mintin durble nd hygienic surfce. These deposits my be minute prticles of iron or rust from other mterils used on the building site which hve come in contct with the pipework. Cre must be tken to void the cutting of crbon steels, including rebr, nd the storge nd erection of scffolding, ner the pipework. Industril nd even nturlly occurring tmospheric conditions cn produce deposits tht cn lso be corrosive, e.g. slt deposits from mrine conditions. The working environment cn lso produce corrosive conditions e.g. high humidity, such s in swimming pool, incresing the speed of discolourtion nd therefore requiring mintennce to be crried out on more frequent bsis. Mny cleners, sterilisers nd bleches, when used in ccordnce with mnufcturers instructions re sfe, but if used incorrectly (e.g. wrm or concentrted), they cn cuse discolourtion nd corrosion on the surfce of ny qulity of stinless steel. Strong cid solutions re sometimes used to clen msonry nd tiles but they should never be permitted to come into contct with metls, including stinless steel. If this should hppen the cid solution must be removed immeditely by copious pplictions of clen wter. Wire brushes nd wire wool must not be used to remove mrks or cement spillge s this will only serve to introduce iron impurities onto the mteril surfce. Problem Clening Agent Comments Routine clening Fingerprints Sop or mild detergent nd wter (such s wshing up liquid). Sop or wrm wter or orgnic solvent (e.g. cetone, lcohol). Sponge, rinse with clen wter, nd wipe dry if necessry. Rinse with clen wter, wipe dry if necessry. Stubborn stins nd discolourtion Mild clening solutions Rinse well with clen wter nd wipe dry.
