Already, Brian, our Editor, with the assistance of our Activities Officer, and his Assistant, have put together some very interesting rides scheduled thru September. If you can't make them all, hopefully you can make at least a couple for an ever lasting memory. As always, a big "THANK YOU" to our Lady's of Harley Officer, Carolyn, and her "TEAM" consisting of Ms. Debbie, Ms. Kathy, Ms. Joyce and Ms. (oops) I mean Mr. Wayne, and all the members that made our "ANNUAL PICNIC" the biggest and best yet. Carolyn and her "TEAM" have worked hard since January to make it happen. If you haven't signed up for Rolling Thunder, Florida State Rally or the 110th Anniversary Celebration (way up yonder) there is still time. OK Members. Time is ticking away for our Key Note event in September. We still need volunteers to make this event happen. Contact Ed Crampton for information. More pries will be available this year than last year. Our Dealer and his Staff work hard to not only support our HOG, but everyone that walks through the doors. If there is something that you need and don't see it on display, ask the Staff in Motor Clothes or Parts. They will be thrilled to offer their assistance. Also, with the weather warming up, be sure to check with the Service Department to have your bike up to par for a lot of miles to be traveled. 3 April 13, 2013 Monthly Meeting Notes Director: Meeting to order at 11:18am at Fisherman s Landing in Grant, Welcome, pledge and greetings. Rider patches awarded. Asst. Director: No Report, did offer up a true story. Treasurer Report: No report given. Editor: discussed sign up for Rolling Thunder and 110th Anniversary in Milwaukee. Director: Asked Past Directors to stand and thanked them for participation. Present was: Georgia Nelson, Al Boileau, Brian VanAlstine and Steve Ripp. Merchandise Officer: we received a new LARGE order, make sure you shop at the next meeting. 4 A word from our Safety Officer Grover Schaffner Tire Pressure - More temperature sensitive than you might think Stamped on the outside of your tires is a recommended tire pressure range. Your tire will at least have an upper limit. To maximie your tire life it is recommended that you strive to keep your tires at the upper limit of those recommendations. Further, this pressure should be determined while the tires are cold - meaning, have not been used for a couple of hours or driven less than one mile. Most importantly it is unsafe to operate your bike at incorrect inflation pressures. Time and outside temperature effect the pressure within your tires. It is NORMAL for a tire to lose about 1 pound per square inch (psi) per month. Outside temperatures affect your tire pressure far more profoundly, however. A tire's pressure can change by 1 psi for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit of temperature change. As temperature goes, so goes pressure. A change of temperature from 70 to 80 degrees can cause a 1 psi increase. For example, if a tire is found to have 38 psi on an 80-degree mid-summer day, it could lose enough air to have an inflation pressure of 26 psi on a 20-degree day six months later. This represents a loss of 6 psi over six months and an additional loss of 6 psi due to the 60 degree temperature reduction. At 26 psi, your tire is severely under inflated and dangerous! There is nothing wrong with your tire if it behaves like this, of course. What is being illustrated here is that you MUST check your tire pressure on a regular basis and to be particularly aware of it on cold days. I recommend you check your tire pressure at the start of each day of riding. Remember TCLOCK: Tires & Wheels; Controls; Lights; Oil; Chassis; Kickstand Nick Gallui, Historian The V-Twin Era The first prototype of the Harley-Davidson V-Twin was unveiled during a motorcycle show in 1907, but the model was not actually produced until Design flaws slowed production, but from 1911 on the V-Twin reappeared in the catalog and rapidly met with success. Head of the engineering department William Harley proudly presents the first page of the Dodge City Globe announcing, Harley-Davidson victory in the 200 mile race. Since the first configuration in 1909 the Harley-Davidson V-Twin adopted a new exhaust outlet called the pocket valve, which replaced the atmospheric value taken from the old De Dion engines. V-Twin production stopped in 1910, but later a few modifications made these valves reliable and efficient. As early as 1914 Harley-Davidson motor Company promoted its motorcycle through advertising, boasting the merits of its models and attracting dealers who were able to maintain its machines. 4

5 Low Down From the Tower Great turnout for the spring RC training. Several new prospects and several new RC's that needed the class session to qualify. Myself and I'm sure the rest of the Hog Group appreciate all the RC's dedication to making each and every ride a safe and fun experience On the subject of dedication I would like to encourage all members of SCHD to explore volunteering for the growth of the club. Especially our Primary Fund Raiser, The Ronald McDonald House. Try to make a Primary meeting or get in touch with aboard member in person or on the website, all ideas are welcome. We have a Donation Item List and the club would like to deliver items on a ride this summer. And of course get out there and try to sell the raffle tickets for a new 2013 HARLEY DAVIDSON ROAD KING. Georgia's Note on ABC's 2013 ABCs of Touring Ride: I am sure there are those of you that are wondering what this is, I am going to give a brief description and recommend that you go onto Members.Hog.Com and look on the website for more information. ABCs of Touring is an ALPHABETICAL scavenger hunt for you and your Harley Davidson motorcycle. You earn points and can win pries by collecting photos of you, your motorcycle, a 2013 HOG Magaine Cover and official signs from A-Z! The ride Road Captain Jeff Smead has planned this ride so each participant will earn an ABCs pin, patch and side stand plate from National HOG. This ride will earn each participant at least 7 points. Jeff has arranged to have everything you need to begin your journey, the only thing you need to bring is your motorcycle and your patience! Directions will be given at the onset of the ride to ensure a smooth day. Individual pictures will be required but we have a method we have used in the past that should everyone follow the directions given it should be a piece of cake to get all pictures made at each location. Pictures will be posted so you can download and send in your forms with pictures when you are done with the tour, you can add more and I hear rumor that should it go well that Jeff will host another ride or two to help get us to the next level of pries! Note: You must be a full or associate HOG member to enter, all entries must be submitted individually. Only one tour per HOG member allowed. There are no exceptions made to the rules.
