I sincerely hope you had a great New Years eve. We had a fabulous end to 2014 with 8 rides in December, and of course, the fabulous Christmas party. It has been a busy month for the boards as we transitioned from the 2013 board to the 2014 board. I know we are all sincerely grateful to Onnie and his team for the wonderful job they did the past two years. Please be sure to stop by Onnie s desk at the dealership and thank him personal. I know that I learned a great deal from him and hope I can step into those big boots that he left behind. In case you missed the December meeting please check to the left of this article for the names and positions of your 2013 board. I want to thank each and every one of them for stepping up to help our club be the best HOG chapter in the world. As I said earlier, December was a busy month for us, but it was great to take a break and attend our blow out Christmas party. The food was great, the drinks flowed, and there was some dancing, and a strange quest singer, but a great time was had by all. If you missed it I hope you will attend next year. We had two Toys for Tots rides this month for after all bikers are all about helping others in need. The dealership had its second annual Toys for Tots Ride, which was a great success with over 200 toys collect for the Marine 2013 drive. I think this is outstanding concidering the weather was not its best. The food was delicious and I don t know who wrapped the burgers & dogs but they were done perfectly, lol. Because of the timing of the publishing of this newsletter, the past director will have already taken place before this comes out so I hope you all had the opportunity to ride with Onnie on his last official act. It is always a great ride! I know I ll be there thanking him one last time. January promises to be another fun month of riding as this is some of Florida s best weather for cruising. We will have 9 rides scheduled this month to some really fun and tasty places. I know I ve gained at least 25 lbs since joining this club lol. You may have notice I pointed out the number of rides we do twice in this article, which is because I believe this is what the club is and should be, a riding club. Sure we do other things, like picnics and some parties and our meetings all are certainly fun, but we own Harleys and we ride. So come join us, this year we will try to make as easy as possible for you to ride, so give it a try we d love to see you. We own Harleys, let s ride!! Bob Parker

5 By Ken Gordon, Historian 1901: William S. Harley, age 21, completes a blueprint drawing of an engine designed to fit into a bicycle. 1903: William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson make available to the public the first production Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The bike was built to be a racer, with a 3-1/8 inch bore and 3-1/2 inch stroke. The factory in which they worked was a 10 x 15-foot wooden shed with the words "Harley- Davidson Motor Company" crudely scrawled on the door. Arthur's brother Walter later joins their efforts. Henry Meyer of Milwaukee, a schoolyard pal of William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson, buys one of the 1903 models directly from the founders. 1904: The first Harley-Davidson Dealer, C.H. Lang of Chicago, IL, opens for business and sells one of the first three production Harley-Davidson motorcycles ever made. 1905: On July 4th, a H-D motorcycle wins a 15 mile race in Chicago with a time of 19:02. In Milwaukee, the first full-time employee is hired. 1906: A new factory, measuring 28 x 80 feet, is built on the Chestnut St. site, later renamed Juneau Avenue. Staff size is increased to six full-time employees. Also, the first motorcycle catalog is produced by the Company and the nickname "Silent Gray Fellow" is used for the first time. 1907: William A. Davidson, brother to Arthur and Walter Davidson, quits his job as tool foreman for the Milwaukee Road railroad and joins the Motor Company. Harley-Davidson Motor Company is incorporated on September 17th. The stock is split four ways among the four founders, and staff size has more than doubled from the previous year to eighteen employees. Factory size is doubled as well. Dealer recruitment begins, targeting the New England region. 1908: Walter Davidson scores a perfect 1,000 points at the 7th Annual Federation of American Motorcyclists Endurance and Reliability Contest. Three days after the contest, Walter sets the FAM economy record at miles per gallon. Word of Harley-Davidson's extremely tough motorcycle spreads rapidly. The first motorcycle sold for police duty is delivered to the Detroit, MI Police Department. 1909: The six-year-old Harley-Davidson Motor Company introduces its first V-twin powered motorcycle. With a displacement of 49.5 cubic inches, the bike produces seven horsepower. The image of two cylinders in a 45- degree configuration would fast become one of the most enduring icons of Harley-Davidson history. Also available for the first time from the Motor Company are spare parts for motorcycles. 1910: The famed "Bar & Shield" logo is used for the first time. It is trademarked at the U.S. Patent Office one year later. At least seven different first place finishes are captured at races, endurance contests and hill climbs across America. All seven winners are riding Harley -Davidson motorcycles. 1911: The "F-head" engine becomes a workhorse of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle until : Construction begins on what will become the six story headquarters and main factory building at Juneau Ave. in Milwaukee. A separate Parts and Accessories Department is formed. H-D exports motorcycles to Japan, marking the first ever sales outside of the U.S. The dealer network grows to over 200 nationwide. 1913: The Racing Department is formed, with William Ottaway as its first Assistant Engineer to racing engineer William S. Harley. Also, the Forecar delivery van is offered for the first time. 1914: Sidecars are made available to Harley-Davidson buyers. Clutch and brake pedals now available on F-head singles and twins. The Motor Company formally enters motorcycle racing this year. The first Racing Engineer is William S. Harley. Within a few short years, team Harley-Davidson is referred to informally as the "Wrecking Crew" because of their incredible dominance of the sport. 1915: Harley-Davidson motorcycles are now available with three speed sliding-gear transmissions with final and primary drive on the same side. 1916: The Enthusiast begins its reign as the longest continuously published motorcycle magazine in the world. 1917: During this year, roughly one-third of all Harley-Davidson motorcycles produced are sold to the U.S. military. The Quartermasters School, a department of Harley-Davidson devoted to training military mechanics on Harley-Davidson motorcycles, opens for business in July. It will later become the Service School. The sale of Harley-Davidson bicycles begins. Individual components are made by the Davis Sewing Machine Co. of Dayton, Ohio. The bicycles are sold through the H-D dealer network. 1918: Almost half of all Harley-Davidson motorcycles produced are sold for use by the U.S. military in World War I. At War's end, it is estimated that the Army used some 20,000 motorcycles in their efforts, most of which were Harley-Davidsons. One day after the signing of the Armistice, Corporal Roy Holtz of Chippewa Falls, Wis., is the first American to enter Germany. He is riding a Harley-Davidson. 1919: The 37 cubic inch opposed twin cylinder Sport model is introduced and gains great popularity overseas. Unique not only for the cylinder configuration, which was directly opposed and flat, the Sport quickly earns a reputation for being uncommonly quiet. 1920: By 1920, Harley-Davidson is the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world. New Harley-Davidson motorcycles can be purchased from over 2,000 dealers in 67 countries worldwide. Leslie "Red" Parkhurst breaks 23 speed records on a Harley-Davidson 61 cubic inch racing motorcycle. Also, the "hog" association starts when the racing team's mascot, a pig, is carried on a victory lap after each race won by the team. Ref: explore/hd-history/1900.html

6 A word from our Safety Officer, Grove Schaffner Group Riding Formation & Function Formation The Road Captain leads from the front left 1/3 lane The rest of the motorcycles follow in staggered formation Motorcycles with sidecars should be on the left. Trikes should be on the right with one two wheeled motorcycle between them and another Trike (considering the right 1/3 of the lane). See the accompanying diagram. There should be a two second gap between bikes in the same 1/3 of the lane. i.e. two seconds between you and the bike directly in front of you. There should be a one second gap between bikes in opposite 1/3 s of the lane. i.e. one second between you and the bike in front of you but to your left (or right). Function First and foremost, everything the Road Captain does is focused on providing a safe and enjoyable ride for everyone. We want to maximize visibility for every rider and provide the Road Captain the ability to see back in the pack. So we evaluated what we have seen and decided: Trikes should be on the right. Bikes with sidecars should be on the left. It is all about visibility and safety. Likewise, it is important to keep a tight formation and maintain the appropriate gaps between the motorcycles in the formation. Too close and there is insufficient space to react. Too far and outside elements can be introduced. Do not lag with major gaps as it invites cars to pull in or worse, to pull out in front of you. If one of the bikes in the group leaves, then the next bike behind it should signal and move to the 1/3 lane vacated by the leaving bike. Then each bike following should in turn, not all at once, signal and move to the appropriate 1/3 lane. The exceptions to this rule of course involve Trikes and Bikes with Sidecars. They should remain in their appropriate 1/3 lane and the two wheeled bikes should move straight up in their 1/3 lane to reestablish the formation. Finally, ride safe and remember to wear your helmet and also remember to fasten the buckle. Ladies of Harley is another benefit of membership, not a separate organization within H.O.G. or the local chapter. Ladies of Harley was established to help women become more active members of H.O.G. and their existing local chapter. This year Space Coast Ladies of Harley would like to take a more active part in the chapter. In addition to the picnic (April meeting) and the Christmas party (December), we would like to have a LOH activity each month. The activity can consist of a Garage Party, a dinner, a ride, pot luck, game night, or anything in between. I have talked to other LOH coordinators in other chapters, they have given me several ideas, from dinner parties to cruises. Here s where you come in, I need suggestions of what you would like to do. I am very excited to represent the LOH this year and look forward to many fun-filled activities throughout the year. I will be more than happy to organize, research and schedule. We have a fabulous year planned. Send me your ideas, kshaffer829@yahoo.com or call me Our first LOH event will be January 12, a breakfast ride to the delicious Sun on the Beach, in Satellite Beach. For this ride, lady riders will ride in the front, ladies riding as a passenger will ride second and then the men will bring up the rear. Looking forward to a fun filled year! Kimberley Morgan

7 HAPPY NEW YEAR To all SCHOG members Never having done a newsletter page prior to this one and being asked at such a late date (thank you Bob). I have decided to take this time to make a short introduction of myself to tell you why I choose to become a local hog member, why I have stayed a member, and most importantly why I have chosen to increasingly involve myself with this group. First of all, I have been around motorcycle since childhood. My dad rode a motorcycle for many years. I have also been riding since a teenager and have always had bikes in my life. I had ridden with many groups in my youth and will keep it at that. I moved to Florida in 2004 without a bike and spent most of the next several years developing my business, so riding was kind of at the bottom of my list. My dad died in late 2011 and I knew then that it was time for living life again (a death reminds us all life is too short) time to ride again. Well. for almost a year of riding alone or with the wife with no real place to go and not knowing Florida that well, yet ending up at the same places all the time, I figured it was time to ride with a group again. I didn t want the group to be like the past. It had to be something more organized and with a purpose. I had heard of the SCHOG group from the dealership so I told my wife I was going to try a few meetings and see what they were all about. I was very fortunate that the first 2 rides I chose to ride on the head road captain and leader of the group was Jim Glazar. Believe me this guy can ride! All the years of riding I had never seen someone handle a group like him. The safety minded and thoughtfulness of the entire group was handled to perfection. I knew then I had the right group to ride with. I have never looked back. It is endless learning from people that have been riding with this HOG group for all these years. There had been a few years I didn t ride and all the years I was riding it was certainly not like this. I wanted to see and learn more, so I took every expert riding class offered and rode with these guys and gals as much as I could. About a year ago I choose to become a road captain myself, again to learn. It is funny that with all the rides I have lead since becoming a road captain I can honestly say that I have learned something new every ride as well as learned something from every other lead rider. My dad was a pretty smart guy. Long ago he taught me you only get-out of something as much as you put into something. I have lived my life like that for as long as I can remember, from little league to school, my work, relations it s all the same. The same principal applies to our pleasurable time, including being a member of a group. There are no expectations from being a HOG member from this group, we have many members that come to just do the rides, or come to a monthly meeting, and there is NO pressure with this group to involve yourself. And that is one of the nice things about being a HOG member. As for myself, as I have said before, the more you put in the more you get out so I am glad that I have been a part of this group and to the extent I have given, because I have received 10 fold. To end this page, I would like to extent myself to any new, or existing members who have the desire to become a road captain or to get more competent with our riding procedures. I will be holding a short briefing after every monthly chapter meeting for the next year to go over things like what you need to do to prepare yourself for a ride, what to expect when you show up to a ride, and some procedures that we follow during a ride. All members and guest are welcome. I hope to see you in January. James Chaloux
